NEA – Nuclear Safety
The NEA promotes nuclear safety by supporting the development of effective and efficient regulation and oversight of nuclear installations
and activities, and by helping to maintain and advance the scientificand technological knowledge base.
To achieve this, the NEA will:
• facilitate the exchange of safety information among member countries – identify significant generic issues and trends – develop common understanding and resolution approaches
• foster the continuous enhancement of the knowledge base of nuclear safetyand the safety expertise capability in member countries
• assist member countries in the resolution of safety issues and strengthenconfidence in the solutions and their implementation
• address safety issues associated with new technologies and reactor designs
• help to maintain an adequate level of capability and competence necessaryto ensure the safety of existing facilities, in particular their long-termoperation, and future nuclear facilities and activities
• enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the regulatory process andencourage harmonization of the regulatory processes

SummarySummary
• NEA is addressing seismic safety matters since early 70‟s
• CSNI/IAGE working group constitutes a forum to exchangeviews, information and experience on generic technical aspectsof integrity and ageing of components and structures, as well asthe seismic behaviour of structures systems and components.
• Based on international experience on probabilistic seismichazards analysis and seismic PSA, on recent earthquakes, and
on the nuclear “renaissance”, the priority of NEA countries foraddressing seismic safety issues will focus on:
– Better characterisation of seismic input
– Engineering approach used for seismic qualification of structures, systems and components (SSC), including aging
effects – Validation of analytical methods
– Re-evaluation of existing facilities and assessment of beyonddesign basis conditions
