hen we left off, our white grapes had gone skinless, seedless and pulpless to ferment—

typically in a stainless steel tank, but sometimes in-barrel. Our red grapes remained whole, perhaps still on the stem in an intact bunch, slightly crushed or macerated to release some juice. Red grapes are commonly set to ferment in square bins made of stainless steel or food-grade plastic. The bin has a removable cover that allows easy access so the winemaker can “punch down” the solids that rise to the top of the fermenting juice. The punch down re-mixes the juice, pulp, skin and seeds, called “must,” for maximum extraction of color and flavor.

The conversion of the sugars in the grape juice to alcohol through the action of yeast is known as “primary fermentation.” Yeast is a living organism which needs relatively warm conditions and a food source to grow. Yeasts are everywhere—in soil, water and on plant surfaces. Today’s modern winemaking, which emphasizes natural processes and as little intervention by the winemaker as possible, favors the use of naturally-occurring yeast for fermentation. Thus, the yeast arrives on the skin of the grapes as they come in from the vineyard and goes into the fermentation vessel with them. In the fermenter, the yeast feeds on sugars, produces byproducts (alcohol and CO2), reproduces and dies. Expired yeast falls to the bottom of the fermentation vessel, creating

what the winemaker calls the “lees.” You may have seen the expression “sur lie” on the back of a bottle of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc to describe how it was made. This French expression means that the winemaker stirred the lees back into the wine to intensify its flavor, very much like the punch down process for reds.

When there is no more sugar in the juice for the yeast colony to feed on, the yeast expires and fermentation stops. At this point, the wine is fermented to dryness, meaning there is 0% sugar in the wine. In making some wines, such as German-style Riesling, the winemaker halts the fermentation process before all the sugar in the juice is consumed by the yeast. These wines are said to have residual sugar or RS. Fermentation can be halted by several factors including cold, the addition of distilled alcohol to the fermenting wine, as in the making of Port-style dessert wines, or the addition of Potassium metabisulfite. Any of these actions will kill off the yeast colony, preventing further primary fermentation.

Fermentation usually takes a week to ten days. During this time, the winemaker will take samples of the juice to carefully measure the acidity, sugar content and alcohol percentage. This monitoring allows the winemaker to assess whether the wine is coming along nicely, or whether he needs to influence the process somehow. How? If the fermentation is

stalled—for instance, if the yeast has quit working due to low “brix” (sugar content)—the winemaker can add sugar. If the wine lacks the proper flavor profile, there are chemical additives such as tartaric acid that can enhance its character. Such measures are typically not necessary in a good year when the growing conditions are optimum. But in years when there was too much rain or too little sunshine to fully ripen the fruit, the winemaker is tasked with making up the shortfall of the crop with manipulation in the winery.

But wait! There’s more! After primary fermentation, red wines are pressed off the must and transferred to barrel. Depending on the varietal, white wines may be bottled directly from the fermentation tank or they may be barreled. In-barrel, red wines and some whites typically undergo a second fermentation initiated by inoculation with lactic acid bacteria, typically Oenococcus oeni. Called “malolactic fermentation,” this process converts tart-tasting malic acid to softer-tasting lactic acid. Lactic acid imparts a creamy richness, called “butter” in the case of Chardonnays. Winemakers actively prevent malolactic conversion in varietals such as Riesling and Gewüztraminer where a fruiter, floral character is desired in the finished wine.

sk anyone passionate about wine and they’ll tell you the journey is the thing. In Southern Oregon, we take that journey down lovely country roads to

uncrowded tasting rooms where it’s not unusual to find the winemaker behind the bar treating us to the story behind their label. The discovery of a great glass of wine is really about our search for it, as along the way we add to our own wine wisdom. Wine, after all, is better appreciated the more you know.

One Applegate Valley winery is leading the way in giving us what we want: inside access. Troon Vineyard has long been a top destination for dedicated oenophiles because, in addition to the beautiful estate grounds and excellent wines, a knowledgeable and well-trained tasting room staff always has insightful information to share. And now, even more so. Beginning this spring, Troon is offering a behind-the-scenes and expanded estate tour and tasting that begins in the vineyard and travels through the heart of the winery, enhancing the wine experience and the journey.

“It became evident that visitors to the winery had a sincere interest and desire to gain a better understanding of the importance of the vineyard as well as all of the different stages in modern-day winemaking,” says Steve Hall, Troon’s Winemaker. The newly-crafted tour is designed to do just that by explaining the evolution of the grape, following the path it takes from the vineyard to the glass and, most importantly, all of the steps in between. Now anyone interested in the art of winemaking can experience it firsthand.

The tour starts with a sample of the first wine and an overview of where Troon sits relative to its AVA and the surrounding wine region. This offers a great sense of perspective; it’s a big wine-world and location is no small deal.

“Dick Troon planted vines back in 1973 on a gentle slope above the Applegate River,” explains Hall. “Similar to Sonoma County and Paso Robles, with mountains marching west to the Pacific Ocean, each summer afternoon, ocean winds race up the Rogue River to cool this part of Southern Oregon. The hot days and cool evenings force the grapes to naturally thicken their skins, and give us more intensity and color in the wines.”

In the vineyard you will witness firsthand the impact of geography and geology. Covering the life of the vine as well as some of the viticulture practices that

are distinctly Troon, such as their site-specific approach and commitment to sustainability, this stop on the tour turns the notion of “sense of place,” into a meaningful concept.

Next, the tour heads toward the winery to the crush pad and past the treading room, places many winery visitors have never seen before. Here the practice of “gentle handling” is revealed as much more than a nice idea: it’s an approach that has real and tangible effects on the complexity of a wine.

“We gently tread on the grape clusters to unleash the natural yeasts and grab color and aromas from the grape skins,” the winemaker says about their decision to incorporate this age-old process, just one of the countless choices made by artisan winemakers like Hall.

The tour passes the “wild fermentation preserve,” where wine ferments outside and meets with native yeasts, kept naturally cool in the shade of large oak trees. On to the tank room, you’ll sample another wine amongst the massive stainless steel tanks and learn a bit about the role they play in the process. Proceeding to the barrel room, the guide shares some of Troon’s specific barrel aging methods and what this lends to the wines you love. The tour concludes with a private tasting in the tasting room, where what you’ve just seen manifests as wine in your glass.

Troon Vineyard has rightly identified a meaningful evolution of the wine tasting experience. According to a national study conducted last summer by Wine Business Monthly, tasting room traffic and revenue is on the rise—up about 18% between 2013 and 2014 in Oregon—as is the trend toward more comprehensive and formal tasting experiences. From sit-down, instructional tastings to extensive estate tours, wineries across the country are answering the call from knowledge-thirsty wine consumers to be allowed behind the cellar door.

We shop for wine differently than we do any other commodity; face-to-face with the producer, where we gather information that simply cannot be gained by standing in front of a grocery store shelf and making a selection based on merchandising and price-point. Troon’s behind-the-scenes winery tours provide the opportunity to enhance our understanding of wine. And, more importantly, they’ll benefit every winery in Southern Oregon as locals and visitors gain a deeper connection to and understanding of the wine in their glass.

Wholesome, natural, yet sophisticated — the air of a French farmers market supplied the theme for Alexi

and Jeff McCullough’s July 2015 wedding. A riverfront wine estate in the Applegate furnished the perfect venue.

“We loved the beach setting,” says Alexi McCullough. “We loved the tasting room.”

Every feature of Red Lily Vineyards painted a vibrant, yet intimate portrait of the region, say the McCulloughs. With fruits, vegetables, artisan foods and wines to rival California’s Napa Valley, Southern Oregon emerged as an enticing weekend destination for a majority of the McCulloughs’ 230 guests.

“We really wanted to show it off,” says Jeff McCullough, 31. “I wanted them to experience our new home,” says

Alexi McCullough, a 29-year-old Rogue Valley native who relocated with her husband from Seattle to Ashland.

The couple considered several other sites, from a historical pear orchard in east Medford to a small, picturesque farm secluded in the mountains above Ashland. On a friend’s suggestion, the McCulloughs trekked 12 miles from Jacksonville to Red Lily, joined its wine club and looked no further.

“Good wine was important to us,” says Jeff McCullough, a financial advisor.

“We enjoy wine, and our friends and family enjoy wine,” says Alexi, a second-grade teacher. “They (Red Lily) opened up their entire portfolio.”

As diverse as grape varieties grown in Southern Oregon, are wedding accommodations at area wineries. From the Old

World grandeur of Belle Fiore’s chateau near Ashland to the humble roots of Red Lily’s 90-year-old, converted pole barn, local wine estates are awash in ambiance. Elegant mansions and walled gardens give glimpses into the genteel past of pear cultivation. Manicured, park-like grounds and groves of native oaks overlook the region’s peaks and valleys.

“People could get a whole sense of the valley there,” says Jeff McCullough of the vantage from Red Lily’s 260 acres.

Rural landscapes appeal to Holly Adolph, but she didn’t want guests and vendors to drive more than a few miles for her September wedding. An icon of agricultural history in the middle of east Medford, RoxyAnn Winery is five minutes from Adolph’s childhood home, making it the obvious backdrop for her next major life event.

“It just felt right for us,” says Adolph, a 28-year-old nurse in Denver. “The value is so great … for what you’re getting.”

RoxyAnn’s price tag of $3,000 for up to 150 guests affords access to the grounds, several historical structures, tables and chairs, setup and cleanup crews and such necessities as restrooms and trash bins. The winery also waives the first $200 toward a wedding party’s wine purchase.

Comparable pricing structures for similar amenities are offered at many Southern Oregon wineries. Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland can host up to 100 for as little as $2,500. Fifty people are Red Lily’s maximum for an initial $3,500, with $20 charged per additional guest. The Applegate’s Schmidt Family Vineyards comes at a cost of $8,000.

Some spots, such as Gold Hill’s Del Rio Vineyards, quote prices within a range of several thousand dollars based on factors beyond the number of guests. Other properties, such as Medford’s EdenVale Winery, don’t disclose pricing before consulting with couples.

“ … Our ability to deliver a custom wedding and manage all the details … makes for a priceless experience,” says Anne Root, EdenVale owner and general manager. “The families enjoy the day, the party, special memories and don’t suffer the stress of managing details.”

Invaluable are the event staff that most Southern Oregon wineries provide, says Medford event planner Kimberly Hicks. Couples who help to set up and pick up after their own weddings forfeit some of that festive feel, says Hicks. And separate rental fees for tables, chairs and other items to outfit a site with no amenities can result in very little cost savings, she adds.

“It’s more the ease and logistical planning,” says Hicks of venues, including wineries, that offer a complete hospitality package.

Although other outdoor locales around the region are plenty popular for weddings, the number of nuptials at wineries seems to be on the rise, with no sign of slowing down, says Hicks. For some couples, the chance to drink good wine may be just the “icing on the cake,” she adds.

“The romance of the vineyards, meadows, barns — and the gorgeous landscape that surrounds us — captures the brides’ image of the perfect wedding day. A day that is naturally and organically beautiful and romantic while not being uptight or stuffy,” says Hicks.

Antique sofas and church pews mingled with birch logs and chalkboards at the McCulloughs’ wedding. Old-fashioned lace contrasted with a modern color scheme of navy blue and chartreuse, echoed in both bridal finery and floral arrangements of hydrangeas and hop vines by Penny and Lulu Studio Florist.

“Everything was very natural,” says Alexi McCullough. “With a Southern Oregon flair.”

The freshest harvest from Southern Oregon’s fields and gardens composed the farm-to-table menu catered by chef Neil Clooney’s Smithfields in Ashland. Organic butter lettuce, radishes, carrots, potatoes and herbs traveled fewer than 10 miles from Barking Moon Farm to the winery. And high summer’s sweet corn grown at Talent’s Fry Family Farm highlighted chilled avocado soup of a verdant green to match the McCulloughs’ bridal bouquets.

Main courses of Oregon steelhead and hanger steak were paired with Red Lily’s Tempranillo, winner of numerous awards. Subject to a minimum wine purchase, the McCulloughs scored a few bottles of the sold-out “Life of Riley,” a tempranillo-cabernet blend, for their head table and parents’ tables.

Lily Girl Rosé — served chilled at the beach — impressed not a few of the McCulloughs’ guests, who rode complimentary shuttles to the winery. The crowd toasted the newlyweds with cava that Red Lily didn’t produce but procured.

“The minute they stepped off the bus, we were greeting them with cava,” says Ragan Atkinson, Red Lily’s special-events manager.

“The whole wedding was about the guest experience,” says Jeff McCullough.With the entire Red Lily spread at their disposal, guests’ wedding invitation

entailed an exclusive look at one of Southern Oregon’s premier wineries. To accommodate a wedding — only about a half-dozen per year — Red Lily closes its tasting-room to regular customers for the day, says Atkinson. That undivided attention convinced the McCulloughs that Red Lily would handle their special day with as much care as its vines and fine wines.

ELIANA WINES is the label of Brian and Carien Jordaan. Brian, a one-time commercial grower of roses, adapted his “soft-handed” horticultural technique to production of the wine grapes that go into Eliana vintages. Since 2008, Brian and his family have tended Belle Vista Vineyard, a stunning hillside site in the Pompadour Bluff area east of Ashland planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines, now nearly twenty years-old, have yielded exquisite fruit under Jordaan’s care.

Made in very limited lots by winemaker Steve Anderson, Eliana vintages reflect a unique terroir and Jordaan’s exacting specifications. Since 2011, Jordaan has added Tempranillo to his wine list of exquisite Bordeaux varietals and blends. From Thistlecroft Vineyard, a close neighbor to Belle Vista, the Tempranillo is a lush mélange of aromas and flavors featuring ripe strawberry and dark cherry notes.

ROXYANN WINERY was originally the pear growing and packing operation known as Hillcrest Orchard. But Jack Day, grandson of the Seattle businessman who became owner and manager of Hillcrest in 1908, had other ideas. Day planted wine grapes on 20 acres of the south-facing slope of RoxyAnn Peak where shallow clay soils are perfect for Bordeaux varietals. With the first harvest in 2001, RoxyAnn Winery was born.

Today the RoxyAnn estate vineyard runs to 70 acres from which the winery produces 15,000 cases of award-winning Claret, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. n oasis of tropical flavor beckons at east Medford’s Bambu restaurant, where customers find both a “neighborhood spot” and a hotspot for local wines.

Bambu’s eclectic menu takes the taste buds on a tour of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim. But chef-owner Adam Ward looks close to home for wines that highlight his Pan-Asian cuisine. Southern Oregon, including east Medford’s own iconic wine estate, RoxyAnn Winery, furnishes about one-third of the labels in Bambu’s cellar and almost half of the restaurant’s wines by the glass.

“We sell RoxyAnn hand over fist above anything else,” says Ward.Just a mile from Bambu, RoxyAnn Winery enjoys a following with the majority

of Ward’s customers, who live in close proximity to both businesses. When wine-tasting patrons ask for dining suggestions, RoxyAnn staff routinely point them in Ward’s direction, says winery owner Chad Day.

“We’re a pretty good staple on their wine list.” Installed in 2001 at the Larson Creek Shopping Center, Ward’s eatery opened

as Medford's second Asian Grill before reinvention as an upscale, rather than fast-casual, concept. Ward’s tenure at Ashland’s Thai Pepper are the roots of Bambu.

Also founded in 2001, RoxyAnn Winery is rooted in 150 years of agricultural history, including more than a century as a commercial pear orchard. The vineyard and winery share property with Hillcrest Orchard, owned by members of the same family for four generations.

RoxyAnn’s extensive portfolio — from light, subtle pinot gris to dark, bold syrah — provides a wine for just about any ethnic fare, says Day. From $28 to $35 per bottle, the winery’s prices meet the midpoint on Bambu’s list.

“They don’t want wines that are going to sit on their shelf,” says Day. RoxyAnn pinot gris is among the crisp whites that pair well with Ward’s citrusy,

spicy, herbaceous recipes, says the chef. Quady North Pistoleta accents the richness of sesame- and macadamia-encrusted mahi with coconut cream sauce, says Ward. Kriselle Cellars sauvignon blanc and Irvine Family Vineyards chardonnay — available in a half-bottle — are other complementary whites, he adds.

On the other end of the spectrum, RoxyAnn merlot and Kriselle cabernet franc are rich backdrops for Ward’s rack of lamb and Kobe beef specials. Although the chef says he gravitates toward white wines, he appreciates such reds as Jaxon Vineyards syrah and Simple Machine Vector, a grenache-syrah blend produced by Brian Denner, winemaker at DANCIN Vineryards.

With a red and a white from Southern Oregon always on special, says Ward, Bambu proves that food inspired by far-flung locales can promote “keeping things local.”

It’s the one thing we all complain about, but lovers of Southern Oregon wines never should. It’s our weather and the climate which, along with the right terrain and soils, allows us to produce everything from Albariño to Zinfandel—well, almost. The actual number of different wine grape varieties planted in Southern Oregon is about 70, with about 40% of acreage devoted to Pinot Noir, 13% to Pinot Gris, 6% to Syrah and 5% to Tempranillo. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay represent 4% each with Riesling and Viognier at 3% each.

But the diversity of our wine grape production wouldn’t mean much if, as a grape producing region, we were a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. Is that the case? Hardly! More like a master of all. If you’re skeptical about the success of our diversity-based wine industry, check out these stats: from 1984 through 2014, the number of Southern Oregon wine grape growers increased from 21 to 226, the number of wineries grew from 3 to 121 and total crop value went from $131,000 to over $28 million!

So how can the region produce high-quality grapes that run the gamut from cool climate Rieslings, Alsatians, and Pinots to “roasted slope” varietals like Syrah and Grenache? Or, to put it another way, in a world where specialization is usually the key to top-quality performance, how is it that we practice viticultural diversity so well?

Southern Oregon University’s Dr. Greg Jones, Director, Division of Business Communication and the Environment and Professor, Environmental Science and Policy—our favorite viticultural climatology guru—shed some light on that question.

Here are some features Jones credits with making Southern Oregon uniquely suited to a broad spectrum of wine grape production: • ClimateEnvelope. Average temperatures during

our growing season fall within an envelope of 58-66 degrees, a range that encompasses the climate envelopes of Burgundy, Bordeaux and Napa

Valley, all three of which have much narrower individual temperature spans.

• GrowingSeason. Due to our growing season length and cool nights during the veraison-to-harvest period, the four ripeness clocks—sugar accumulation, acid respiration, phenolic ripeness, and fruit character—are more in balance in Southern Oregon than in the Willamette Valley where sugar development often falls short before rain falls or in the Napa Valley where ripe sugar levels are reached before other elements of flavor have developed.

• Rainfall. Southern Oregon has less precipitation than the Willamette, making for lower disease pressure and cleaner fruit, together with one of the widest diurnal temperature (daytime high versus nighttime low) swings of any wine region worldwide…enabling greater potential flavor and aroma development.

Dr. Jones summarized the effect of our latitude, seven-month growing season and overall climate, stating that these conditions “create a unique place that provides ideal conditions for site-matched varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Tempranillo, Grenache, Malbec and others . . . with varietal character, natural acidity and brix levels that result in the best wine from that variety that can be made any place in America.”

DEL RIO VINEYARDS is both a place deeply rooted in history and a winery reflecting the latest in viticulture and enology. The tasting room was built in 1864 and served for many years as the Rock Point Stage Hotel. The parcel of land that comprises one of the largest wine-growing operations in the Rogue Valley was a payment to the original owner for his service in the Rogue Indian Wars. The big red building displaying the Del Rio name, that today houses the winery, began as the fruit packinghouse of Del Rio Orchards.

Similarly, Del Rio’s estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Viognier reflect the time-honored traditions of Old World winemaking blended with New World innovation by winemaker Jean-Michel Jussiaume.

April, May, and June are prime months to visit the tasting room! Between the sunshine and the beautiful view, visitors love bringing a picnic to relax and enjoy a bottle of wine outside. To kick-off Oregon Wine Month (May), Del Rio will be participating in Roam the Rogue on May 7th. It’s a perfect way to explore the Upper Rogue Wine Trail, and see what the area has to offer. They will also host a uniquely-Oregon themed dinner, complete with local foods and inspiration on May 14th. In June, the Summer Concert Series kicks-off! Come ready to drink and dance in the backyard every other Friday evening to start the summer off right.

CLIFF CREEK CELLARS vineyard and tasting room is located on the 250-acre Garvin family farm, a century-old farm located in picturesque Sam’s Valley, just a short, scenic drive from downtown Medford. Visitors will be treated to fabulous wines in the tasting room and a pleasing pastoral-setting featuring interesting vintage and current-day farming equipment.

Cliff Creek is located in one of the Rogue Valley’s most authentic farming communities and is a must-visit. With vines producing premium-quality grapes, they specialize in Bordeaux and Rhône-style varietals, including a big, bold Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cliff Creek’s expertly-crafted wines have won numerous medals including gold for the 2011 Claret and 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon at this year’s Cabernet Shootout as well as gold for the 2011 Cabernet Franc at the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Each month in the tasting room, visitors are invited to view works by a “friendly-priced” local artist, and meet the artist at monthly artists’ receptions.

This April, a new vintage of their “White White” wine will be released, joining the popular “Red Red” table wine series, with 5% of all sales going to OHSU Knight Cancer Research. On May 7, Cliff Creek is a must-stop on the annual Roam the Rogue Tour, featuring 7 Upper Rogue area wineries. CAPRICE VINEYARDS and ALPACA FARM has been home to Jim and Jeanne Davidian since 2004 when they moved their Riverside California ranching operation to a site outside Jacksonville. The property features a 7 acre vineyard, leading the Davidians to establish their Caprice label with their first vintage—a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. Since, the Caprice wine list has expanded to include Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewurztraminer and Claret along with Cabernet Sauvignon, all made in small quantities, with special attention to the character of estate fruit, produced by thirty-year-old vines.

Inside the tasting room or outside on the patio under the arbor, you'll enjoy Caprice wines accompanied by appetizer plates with assorted meats, cheeses, olives and crackers. DAISY CREEK VINEYARD owners Russ and Margaret Lyon came to Jacksonville in 1994 looking for a place similar to the Northern Rhone Valley’s famous Côte Rotie (roasted slope), the perfect place to grow Syrah and Viognier. On a 23-acre tract where fortune-seekers once panned Daisy Creek for gold, the Lyons planted a couple of acres of vines. Due in large part to the mineral-laden soils washed down from the Siskiyou Mountains by the creek, and in larger part to the hard work of the couple tending the vines, the fruit they grew turned out to be good—really good.

Today the vineyard occupies over half of the property and produces seven wine grape varietals, all available for tasting at the Lyons’ on-site tasting room. The Daisy Creek label is well-known for its exceptional quality—many of which have won medals at prestigious competitions including the San Francisco Chronicle, Sunriver Sunfest, Savor Northwest and Oregon Wine Experience.

Russ and Margaret are delighted to showcase their wines and might even point out an old slurry mine, a reminder of the old-timers who came seeking gold. Most of them never found any. Margaret and Russ certainly did.

QUADY NORTH’s Jacksonville tasting room is located in a charming brick building, reckoned by some to be the old telephone exchange, at the corner of 5th and California Streets. The modest premises belie the big wines inside.

Quady North is the name of Herb Quady’s Applegate Valley wine venture, a scion of his parents’ Fresno area Quady Winery. While the senior Quady is a producer of renowned sweet and aperitif wines, Quady North is known for big, bold Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. After working as Assistant Winemaker at the California Central Coast Bonny Doon Vineyard, Quady came to Oregon to found his own brand, convinced that the truly-compelling wines were being made from grapes grown in cooler areas. In 2005 the family selected 100 acres of south-facing hillside in the Applegate Valley and planted their first 15 acres of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Viognier. Today there are eight vineyards, with two in the Rogue Valley, and the list of varietals has expanded to include Grenache, Marsanne, Rousanne, and Merlot. Quady North is committed to producing small lot, minimally-handled wines sourced primarily from the estate. DEVITT WINERY began as the logical answer to a sticky problem. In 2003, Jim Devitt had harvested a bumper crop of grapes from his vineyard; the only fly in the ointment was there was no home for his grapes. Having owned and operated Pope Valley Winery in the Napa Valley during the 1970s and '80s, the solution was to go back into the wine business. So Devitt Winery in the Applegate Valley was born.

Today the vineyard that originally consisted of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon has flourished to further include, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Viognier.

With the addition of grandson Brendon Butler to the winemaking team, a new generation has joined the family winery, ensuring the continuation of quality winemaking.

What visitors will find at Devitt Winery is no pretension, no frills, but a fine wine experience that harkens back to the days of the small wine producers. For the Devitts it’s about growing exceptional fruit and making extraordinary wine and having a sense of humor in the bargain. So don’t be surprised that the wine list includes a Rosato called, “The Butler Did It,” a dessert wine dubbed, “When Pigs Fly, Le Petit Oink” or in tribute to a deceased pet, “Aggie Dog Red.” Despite names that are occasionally silly, the Devitt standard for wine of exceptional quality is quite serious…but also fun.

RED LILY VINEYARDS is a boutique, family-owned winery in the beautiful Applegate Valley, specializing in classic Spanish wines, including Tempranillo and Verdejo. Red Lily is named for Bolander’s Lily, a rare species of red lily growing in the nearby Siskiyou Mountains, and for the owner’s daughter, Lily.

VALLEY VIEW is an iconic name in the Rogue Valley. Not only is it the name of Peter Britt’s original Jacksonville winery, circa 1858, but it also came to be the name of the first modern winery in the Rogue Valley. Founded by Frank and Ann Wisnovsky, Valley View was bonded in 1978. Using fruit from his Applegate Valley estate, planted in 1972, Wisnovsky made Bordeaux varietals up until his death in 1980 when Valley View operations were passed on to Ann and sons.

The thirty-seven-year-old winery is now operated by Mark and Michael Wisnovsky. The vineyard has more than doubled in size since the original planting and now includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Rousanne, Chardonnay and Syrah. Wines have been made by UC Davis-trained enologist John F. Guerrero since 1985. Wines offered at the Applegate Valley Wine Pavilion in Ruch include Rogue Valley red and white blends, as well as Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a Port-style dessert wine bottled under the premium Anna Maria label.

PLAISANCE RANCH embodies the inspiration of Joe Ginet, grandson of a pioneering vintner of the same name who established a vineyard on Sterling Creek outside Jacksonville in the 1890’s. The original Plaisance Ranch didn’t survive the depression years due to the death of the original Joe Ginet. But in 1998, the third Joe of the Ginet family planted a new vineyard in Williams and named it after his grandfather’s estate. Originally planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah, Ginet added Mondeusé in 2001, a grape from Savoie, the region of France from which his grandfather came.

A winery with such a heritage could hardly be ordinary. One look at the slew of accolades Plaisance Ranch garnered in 2015 will convince you that indeed it is not. SCHULTZ WINES is the label associated with Glory Oaks Vineyard and Farm, a new venue in the Applegate Valley. Glory Oaks is a long way from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where owners Greg and Debbie Schultz took their first steps toward becoming viticulturists. Their journey began with a few classes on wine at Louisiana State University that sparked a tasting trip to Southern Oregon. It was love at first sight. Greg and Debbie stayed in Ashland for five months in 2010, volunteering as cellar hands at Weisinger Family Winery. Once they met Linda Donovan of Pallet Wine Company and discovered the custom crush option for launching a label, Schultz Wines was born.

The first bottling of Schultz Wine was a 2010 Chardonnay that won a gold medal at the 2011 World of Wine competition. 2011 was also the year Greg and Debbie moved to Oregon. Not long after, hiking the Enchanted Forest Trail, they found a “for sale” sign on the property that would become Glory Oaks. Tempranillo and Malbec are now planted and the existing ranch house has recently been converted to a tasting room offering stunning views of the vineyard and valley. The tasting room offers Pinot Noir, with fruit sourced from the Willamette Valley, and Merlot, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Gris and red dessert wine with fruit sourced from the Applegate Valley. It’s the perfect pairing—a great story and fine wines!

TROON VINEYARD is located in the heart of the Applegate Valley AVA, the southernmost appellation in Oregon. ecent events speak to the growth of Southern Oregon’s reputation as a wine-producing region poised to take its place among the world’s most

distinguished.The February 2016 edition of Wine Enthusiast named Ashland one of the “10

Best Wine Travel Destinations” in the world. Acclaimed wine columnist Paul Gregutt, who penned the description of Ashland’s viticultural, culinary and other delights, did so with a broad stroke that also applauded the whole Southern Oregon wine-producing region.

In a Southern Oregon Winery Association (SOWA) press release reacting to the Wine Enthusiast article, Association President Michael Donovan stated, “Ashland and Southern Oregon’s listing as a top wine travel destination is a wonderful testament to the dedication, tenacity, and hard work of Southern Oregon grape growers, winemakers, and wine fans … We are honored by this recognition and thrilled that more people will come to understand the uniqueness of Southern Oregon’s extended growing season that allows us to grow more varietals…than almost anywhere in the world.”

Immediately following the Wine Enthusiast news, twenty-eight students in the Viticulture and Enology Department of the University of California, Davis spent the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend experiencing Southern Oregon first-hand by touring wineries in the Rogue and Applegate Valleys. John Pratt, President of the Rogue Valley Winegrower’s Association along with SOWA Board member Tim Vevoda, hosted the group on visits to DANCIN Vineyards, Quady North, Barrel 42, Kriselle Cellars, Cowhorn Vineyards, Red Lily Vineyards, Woodridge Creek Winery and Plaisance Ranch. Meeting with the students at Belle Fiore Winery on the final day of their visit, Donovan expressed the hope that many of these future winemakers might return this summer as winery interns.

In late January, the Oregon Tempranillo Alliance convened the first-ever Oregon Tempranillo Celebration at the Ashland Hills Hotel, a lively event that attracted 75 growers, winemakers and proponents of the variety Paul Gregutt called the “defining grape” of our region.”

Tempranillo refers to a wine grape and its red wine varietal produced principally in the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions of northern Spain. Tempranillo has the fourth-largest planted acreage among wine grapes world-wide. From 2000 to 2010, Tempranillo acreage expanded faster than any other variety.

Earl Jones, founder of Abacela Winery in the Umpqua Valley, pioneered Tempranillo production in Oregon, planting his original four-acre vineyard in 1995. By 2014, Jones reported, there were 57 Tempranillo producers in Oregon and that its planted area had expanded to 344 acres, producing a harvest of 839 tons and an economic impact of $9 million.

Randy Caparoso, the wine expert who led the analytical tastings at the Celebration, observed that Oregon has the opportunity to become known as the premier Tempranillo producing region in North America.
