Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace made a choice that cost their

team the game and the conference title. But it was the right choice

to make.

That day, Sara came up to bat for the opposing team. She hit her first

ever home run, sending two of her team mates across home plate.

But Sara missed first base. When she turned, she hurt her knee—badly.

She needed a pinch runner. But that meant her three-run homer

would become a two-hit single. If her team helped her, she would be

out.

That’s when Mallory asked, “Would it be okay if we carried her?” The

umpires said it was okay. So Mallory and Liz carried Sara around the

bases, letting her touch each bag. With their help, Sara got her home

run.

Joseph Schooling has two great memories of standing next to

Michael Phelps, the legendary Olympic swimmer. Both of his memories

required courage.

The first memory is when Joseph was just thirteen. Michael was in

Singapore for training when Joseph managed to snag a photo of

himself with his swimming hero. It took courage for Joseph to approach

a world-class athlete and ask for a photo. Joseph had that courage.

Fast forward eight years. Joseph is again standing next to Michael

Phelps. But this time they are receiving Olympic medals. And Joseph

is standing above Michael. He has won the gold medal and Michael

the silver medal. Because Joseph competed with courage, he was

can have too. He gets a good night’s sleep.—between nine and

twelve hours a night. Roger remembers the importance of recharging.

Imagine jumping 20 feet through the air with your eyes closed so you

can’t see where you’ll land. That is scary. But that’s pretty much what

Lex Gillette does every time he does the long jump. But Lex can’t

open his eyes. He has been blind since he was 8 years old.

So how does Lex make up for his lack of sight? He listens. His coach

claps and yells, “Fly, fly, fly!” This sound keeps Lex running and jumping

in the right direction. Lex and his coach are such a good team that

Lex has won silver medals in the last four Paralympic Games.

Before Lex listened to his coach, he listened to his mom, who is also

blind. She made sure Lex learned how to read Braille and use a cane.

She encouraged him to live his life to the fullest. And he does. Listening

has paid off for Lex.

1. Choose your sports

Think about athletic people in your church or

community. Offer sports these people would like

to lead. It’s a great chance to get new people

involved, like college students and parents. You’ll

need a gym, grassy area, or parking lot. If you

have none of those, opt to use facilities at a park

or school.

Almost every format you can dream up, MEGA

Sports Camp curriculum can fit. If the 5-day, 3-hour
