Broadcast Guidelines What you need to know to make the most of your sponsorship announcements.

1. Announcement copy should be similar in content and construction to the quality, professionalism and excellence that are
signature elements of public radio programming. Copy must be written as concisely as possible.
2. Announcement copy is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, and is intended to identify, rather than
promote, your business or organization to the audience. In order to comply with FCC regulations, Wisconsin Public Radio
has established clarifying guidelines and retains final editorial authority over all announcement copy.
3. It is the policy of Wisconsin Public Radio that all business supporters follow the same guidelines, regardless of profit or non
profit status. Supporters of national programs produced by WPR may have different restrictions with relation to length andpreamble.
4. Each announcement is limited to 15 seconds in length. This includes the preamble. Copy should be able to be read comfortably, out loud, in 14-14.5 seconds. A good guideline for this is 35 words. Each spoken letter and number counts as one word.

B. The announcement MUST contain the name of the

• A value-neutral description of major product(s)and/or service(s), no more than three:

services, cabinet making and refinishing.
• Phone number or website. Use of telephone
number and website address together is
discouraged. It is preferable to use one or the other:
» Tickets available at 555-1212.
» More at Northland Theatre dot org.
• An established company slogan (usually allowable).
D. Announcement copy may be changed periodically/
seasonally and/or more than one script may be
rotated through the schedule, as appropriate
or necessary.
E. Announcement copy may NOT contain:
• Any mention of price:
» No interest rate, pricing information, discount, savings, or value of any kind may be included.
• Call to Action:
» Examples of prohibited words or phrases are:
“call”, “come by”, “be sure” or “learn more at”
in relation to a product or service.
• Qualitative or comparative language:
» No descriptive or comparative language of a product or service is allowed. A Business Support announcement may not explain that something is “perfect, less filling” or is the “largest, smallest” or the “most” anything.
» Third-party qualifications are not allowed:
“board-certified doctor,” “licensed and
insured carpet cleaner.”
» First-person references (“I, our, my, we”) are
prohibited. Second-person references, such as
“you, your, you’re” are strongly discouraged.
