PRINCIPAL’S NEWS The Athletics Carnival will go ahead today at school. Due to current restrictions, there will be no spectators attending and the organisation will be different this year. Field events will be run today and age races and other track events may be run during sport time to ensure accurate timing is recorded for end of year school champions.
Somersby PS will not participate in the Small Schools Athletics Carnival this year. Central Mangrove PS, Peats Ridge PS and Somersby PS have withdrawn from this carnival. At this stage there is no Brisbane Water Zone Carnival for students to attend and there will be no North Sydney or State Carnival this year.
Times will be recorded for track and field events at our school carnival in the event that a Zone Carnival is organised and goes ahead later this year.
Staffing Update Mrs Cranstone is away today fulfilling her role on the selection panel for the Principal position. Miss Suazo is teaching K/1 today.
Science Week – KMHS Science Day This week is Science Week. Students will be participating in podcasts as part of Science Week activities. Year 6 will be attending KMHS for Science Day activities on Tuesday. Safety Drills Last week we held our safety drills which included Evacuation and Lockdown Drills. We were able to practise the new functionality of the upgraded phone system which was recently installed, allowing staff to deliver simultaneous announcements to all classes in the event of an emergency. Regular reviews and training are completed by staff to ensure we are prepared for all emergency situations.
Annual Bushfire Planning for the upcoming bushfire season is taking place this Thursday, 20th August.
Student Absence Student absence notes have been sent home. These need to be signed and absences explained and returned to school. If students are away for 3 days or more, absences must explained in writing or a doctor’s certificate provided if students have been unwell. Extended leave forms are available from the school office and must be completed if you plan to be away on holidays during a school term.

Life is about creating yourself” ~ George Bernard

Please ensure students are not coming to school with cold and flu symptoms which may include runny noses, sore throats, coughing etc. Students are required to be at home if they are unwell.
Staff are not able to care for students who are unwell at school. Please ensure your contact details are up to date at the office in the event that students need to be collected from school if they are unwell.
Homework If you would like your child to complete homework each week please let your child’s teacher know and they can organise regular homework to be sent home.
Hats We have removed spare hats from the office for students to use. Please ensure students have their own hat each day, labelled with their name.
Hats can be purchased from the office any day of the week with cash or online using the P&C’s banking details, the same as the uniform shop.
Uniform Thank you to all our families for making a huge effort to ensure school uniform is worn every day. It is wonderful to see students wearing our Somersby uniform with pride.
The uniform shop is open Friday mornings 8:30 – 9:00am.
Book Week Just a reminder that Book Week is next week. All book purchases will be completed by students at school and a Wish list, which teachers will help students complete, will be sent home to families. Purchases can be made with cash or POP payments online. Parents are not able to attend school this year to purchase books due to current COVID-19 restrictions.
Book Character Parade The Book Character Parade will be Thursday 27th August. Unfortunately, parents are not able to attend the parade this year however we will post the parade on our Facebook page and there will be plenty of photos to share.
We can’t wait to see students dressed up as their favourite character! A Book Fair prize will be given for best dressed in each class to spend at the Book Fair.
