Treatment for varicose veinsOne of the most common non surgical varicose vein treatment options available is sclerotherapy performed by a cosmetic physician. Also known as foam sclerotherapy, the procedure typically involves injecting a saline/sulfur foam solution straight into the vein. The foam injections for varicose veins aggravate the lining of the blood vessels, leading them to collapse and prompting the vein to shrink (a process called sclerosis).
Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins is regarded as an effective treatment, including for those large varicose veins that can become painful. We use ultrasound to visualise the veins of interest before inserting a needle (catheter) into the varicose vein. The ultrasound helps to guide the catheter so it can deliver the sclerosant into the vein. This procedure is minimally invasive and is less painful than previous varicose vein treatments.
