Reflecting on the Word
Our readings pair up the story of Jesus coming to dine at Martha and
Mary’s house with God coming to dine with Abraham and Sarah. And
just as Abraham turned to Sarah for help in preparing the meal, Martha
turns to her sister for a hand. After all, why should one person bear the
burden of serving the Lord?
But Mary does not come into the kitchen, even after hearing her sister
banging things around in there, perhaps a little more loudly than usual.
Instead, she stays sitting at the foot of the Lord, listening to him. Mar-
tha, not one to keep her thoughts to herself, addresses directly the cause
of her sister’s prolonged delay: “Lord, do you not care that my sister
has left me by myself to do the serving?” (Luke 10:40).
As a matter of fact, Jesus didn’t care. What he did care about was that
Martha was all “anxious and worried about many things”(10:41). Jesus
did not care about busy Martha but about worried and anxious Martha.
Even more simply, what he cared about was Martha. Not the meal, not
the table, not the time they ate, or whatever else was bothering her. He
just cared about Martha—and Mary, too, of course. But he didn’t have
to worry as much about Mary.
Perhaps we could consider this simply a story about Jesus visiting two
very dear friends and wanting some time with them both, together. And
if that was true then, why wouldn’t it be true now? If you find yourself
worried and anxious these days, give yourself some time with the Lord.

Welcome Newly Registered Parishioners!
Our parish continues to be blessed and enriched
by the presence of new parishioners:
Jojo Michael, Soraya, Justine,
Ammiel & Sian Galvan
May St. Veronica Church offer you a place
where you can bring your sorrow and joys, your
pain and triumphs and peace for your soul.
We welcome you with open arms and hearts!
From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
Updating You on Capital Campaign: The building de-
partment of the Archdiocese, Dryco Company
(contractor), the architects, and our three coordinators of
Capital Campaign are engaged in consultations. Fine tun-
ing is going on and final touches are being given before
the start of the first phase of the pavement work. As soon
as the start date is available, I shall let you know. Our goal
is to begin and complete this first phase well before the
school children return to school.
Bingo on Wednesdays in July: Just a reminder that
Bingo on Wednesdays this month of July benefits our
capital campaign. Please do consider participating in
Bingo this month and having a good time with your fam-
ily and friends. In the process, you’ll be supporting our
drive to raise money to pay for the pavement work.
Come one, come all!
Parish Center as Temporary Church: When the first
phase of the pavement work begins which will be all
around our church building, we anticipate that we may
not have access to the church for two or three weeks. I
would like to prepare you psychologically for this situa-
tion. No worries! We will turn our Parish Center into a
temporary church, with tarps laid and the altar and chairs
arranged conveniently. Our faith life and liturgical cele-
brations will continue uninterrupted. I would like to
thank you in advance for your understanding and the
spirit of accommodation. As Julian of Norwich says,
“All shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of
thing shall be well…”
Color in front of Pastoral Center: I recently had a con-
versation with our gardener Jean Curutchet about the
need to bring some color in front of the Pastoral Center.
Accordingly, he has already planted some colorful
plants. When you are in the Pastoral Center next time,
please do look around and enjoy the changes to the gar-
den. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” As and when
the opportunity arises, let’s make our campus a little bit
more green, more beautiful, and more colorful.
Audio-Visual Facility in the Pastoral Center: Those
of you who are familiar with the Pastoral Center building
will know that the old chapel in the building is now
called the Veronica Room, where meetings take place. In
that room, we have now stalled a good quality audio-
visual facility. This is in keeping up with the needs of the
parish and to provide for growth in faith and spirituality
through the means of audio-visual aids. Now we can
watch movies in that room on a big screen. Movies with
the themes of spirituality can help people share their in-
sights and faith, and help bring people together. We shall
put together a Movie Club, like we have a Book Club.
This room could also be used for lectures and retreats
with the facilities of PowerPoint and other modern
means of communication “to preach the good news
and make disciples of all nations” as our Lord com-
mands us to do.
Spanish Masses: After consultations with Father Ra-
fael, our new Parochial Vicar, I have decided to begin
Spanish Masses every Sunday effective the first Sun-
day of October. As you know, now we have Spanish
Masses on the first and third Sundays only of the
month. As you can sense, there are increasing num-
bers of Spanish-speaking members in our community
and we have the sacred obligation of providing for
their pastoral needs. I anticipate that there are going to
be increasing numbers of Baptisms, Quinceañeras,
weddings, and funerals in Spanish in our parish. This
is a sign of the evolving nature of our parish and the
church. This also is a reflection of the demographics
in South San Francisco, Bay Area, and California in
general.
Word of God---Entertaining Angels: Abraham and
Sarah entertain three angels who are disguised as men.
They go out of their way to care for the three travel-
ers. At the end, there is the promise of the son for Sa-
rah in her old age. In the gospel, Jesus is entertained
by Mary and Martha. Hospitality is the hallmark of
Christianity. Going out of ourselves and welcoming
others and making them feel at home and cared for---
these are all part of our faith journey. Whenever we
care for others and show them hospitality, we actually
entertain angels. Why, we entertain Jesus himself who
calls us to show hospitality to others, especially those
who do not receive hospitality from anyone else.
What is the quality of our faith that inspires us to wel-
come others in all sorts of situations and make them
feel affirmed, respected, and loved?
Catholic Joke: Gallagher opened the morning news-
paper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary
column that not only had he died but also the local
church had already scheduled his funeral Mass. He
quickly phoned his best friend Finney. “Finney, did ye
see the paper?” asked Gallagher. “Sure and they say I
died.” “Sure and I saw it!” replied Finney. “Where are
ye callin’ from?”

Father Rafael de Avila,
our new Parochial Vicar,
introduces himself….
It is time to start
knowing each other a little
bit more because I´ve been
among you for nearly three
weeks already.
I was born in Mexico
City. I am the third child
out of four siblings. I was
nine years old when my
father passed away. Actually, he was working for the Mexi-
can government in the department of Treasury.
I was twelve years old when I went to the Minor semi-
nary of Guadalupe Missioners for Foreign Missions. It is a
missionary Society just like Maryknoll in the USA. As a
matter of fact, the first superior of this Society was a Mexi-
can born Maryknoll bishop whose name was Alonso Es-
calante. The Minor seminary was located in Guadalajara,
five hundred miles from Mexico City. After finishing my
High School I went into the Major Seminary to start my
studies in Philosophy. The next step was one year of noviti-
ate and after that, four years of Theology.
During the third year of theological studies my superi-
ors decided that I should get my degree in Theology in
Rome. I ended up for the rest of my studies living in the
Urbanian College and taking my degrees in the Urbanian
University and Gregorian University. At that time the Pope
in Rome was Paul VI.
I was still doing my Master’s degree when I was or-
dained. When I finished my studies, I returned to Mexico
City to teach the seminarians for Guadalupe Missioners.
In 1981 I worked for the Propagation of Faith Secretary. I
was sent to Jerusalem to start the Biblical Studies House of
Propaganda Fide, but this project did not last long because
of the social unrest at that time. So, I went back to Mexico
City, and I was appointed Dean of the Universidad Intercon-
tinental, a private university in Mexico City owned by Gua-
dalupe Missioners.
After three years in La Universidad Intercontinental I
was sent to work as missionary in Hong Kong where I had
to study another language and learn another culture. I spent
eight years in Hong Kong. Those were memorable years.
Then I took a sabbatical and came to Santa Clara University
to get a Master’s degree in Counseling. After that I was
asked by my superiors to go to Los Angeles, to work with
my confreres in a multilingual Parish.
In 1997 I came to the Bay Area and ever since I have
been ministering in several parishes of the Archdiocese: All
Souls, Saint Anthony of Padua in Menlo Park, Saint John
the Evangelist Church, Our Lady of the Pillar, Visitacion
Church, and St. Bruno. I am happy to join St. Veronica
Church. I look forward to getting to know you more and
serving this community. Thank you for your warm hospitali-
ty and friendship.
