the Past and Present of Australian Motoringavailable only as a four-door sedan, The Fairlane based P5 series Ford LTD was released in August 1973. It had a longer wheelbase than the Fairlane and headlamps were concealed by vacuum operated retractable grille sections.

The 1957 Chevy was presented to the market as being a “Sweet Smooth and Sassy” vehicle. They were roomy, yet remained tastefully restrained, with period use of tail fins and chrome. The optional Turboglide transmission made “shifting” imperceptible.

Used in the 80s, the specially designed and built 6 wheel HJ Ambulance was based on the long wheelbase HJ. At the rear of the standard drive axles an additional set of rear

axles were fitted to allow for the extra length of

the car and to provide better stability.

2010 saw John Bowe returning to the Touring Car Masters category driving “Sally”, his 1969 Ford Mustang. Powered by a Ford Windsor 351 V8 engine the Mustang fastback was a consistent front runner winning the Touring Car Masters Championship in 2011 & 2012. The talented driving of Australian touring car legend John Bowe definitely brought out the best from this muscle car.

Chrysler released the VH Valiant ute in 1971. It was the first fully Australian designed Valiant and was a major change from the preceding VG range. The new body was larger and roomier than the VG series but the rectangular headlamps were the same.

This flash Aussie Ute was fitted with the new

Overhead Valve V8 engine and featured a bold chrome slash that extended from

the front headlight along the body past the doors. It

had heaps of get up and go.

The 1977 model Celica had a muscle car look and with the ‘hot’ 2 litre 18R-C motor, manual gearbox & rear wheel drive would have provided the keen driver with more than adequate performance and handling at the time.

The more upmarket Ford Zodiac “lowline” was slightly altered to distinguish it from the Zephyr. Enhancements included a more elaborate tail-end & different front grille. It presented well with two-tone paint, whitewall tyres, chrome wheel-trim embellishers and gold plated badges.

Although based on the VF series Chrysler Valiant, the VIP had four headlights rather than two, different rear lights, a unique rear window, and a heavily padded vinyl roof. It was offered with a 225 cu in Slant-6 or a 318 cu in “Fireball” V8 engine. Both engines used Chrysler’s Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission.

In 2013 the NSW police highway patrol welcomed a tweaked HSV Gen-F GTS into its fleet. Although the car could easily outrun a number of would-be criminals, it was used for demonstration purposes only to connect with younger generation drivers and promote road safety. The police car is tuned to develop close to 500kW, making it quite easily Australia’s most powerful police car.

The WB ute was a workhorse that was released in 1980. A 3.3-litre inline six cylinder engine was standard equipment and a 4.2-litre V8 was offered as an option. The even more powerful 5.0-litre V8 option was available by special request.

Introduced in 1965, the XP Ute was ‘Built stronger to last longer’. It replaced the

XM Falcon which had been in production since 1964.The XP range introduced a

stronger steel sub-frame making the ute more rigid and capable.

The XW Falcon was released in June 1969 replacing the XT Falcon. Almost all exterior panels were new and the interior was extensively redesigned. The panel van was a popular choice for commercial use because of its large cargo area, load capacity, looks & strength. Engine choices ranged from 6 cylinders to a powerful V8.

The Hz range released in 1977 saw the introduction of “Radial Tuned Suspension” which greatly improving ride & handling of this sizable car. The upmarket Premier was distinguished by quad headlamps, sill mouldings, badging plus unique wheel trims, a woodgrain dash & tinted glass. A popular Australian family car that was reliable, spacious & comfortable.

The AP3 was the final version of the Chrysler Royal & Wayfarer models. The distinguishable differences from its predecessors were its vertically stacked quad headlamps and triple tail lights. Chrysler’s 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission replaced the 2-speed PowerFlite automatic of the AP2.

The TE series Gemini was advertised as being ‘On its own for Value’ when introduced in October 1979. It featured significant exterior changes with new front and rear styling, comparable with the Isuzu Gemini and Commodore models of the same era. The TE was the most popular out of all the Geminis, selling over 70 000 units.

This sleek sexy vehicle was designed in

Australia and only 1180 units were

made in the three years from 1952.

It drew crowds wherever it went

and many a young bloke lost his girl friend to the guy

who bought one of these.
