While things haven’t gone quite
as planned, the Sib-ley-Ocheyedan FFA chapter hopes to have its new greenhouse up and operational before the end of the school year.
The chapter has long considered adding a greenhouse, according to FFA Advisor Brian Gottlob, but the last time it was discussed — prior to his hiring as the school’s agriculture teacher and FFA advisor six years ago — the department opted instead to add a computer lab.
Now, thanks to a nearly $7,000 Carl Perkins grant through the Iowa Department of Education, the greenhouse project is rising to reality. The grant, along with $3,000 in alumni contributions, were leveraged to receive a $10,000 matching grant from Farm Credit
Services of America, Gottlob said.
Planning for the greenhouse began in August 2017, and the materials were ordered last March. Backordered parts, however, delayed the arrival until June, and then the contractor hired to erect the greenhouse couldn’t start on it until October. At that time, it was realized parts were missing. Add in weather woes and Gottlob is hopeful the building will be completed before the end of the school year.
“We’ve got all the frames up, but we haven’t started applying plexiglass to the wall,” he said.
Once the greenhouse is ready for use, Gottlob anticipates it will be well-used by a variety of middle- and high school classes.
Thus far, plans are for both the middle and high school science classes to have units in plant production, while the Family and
Consumer Science department is excited about the opportunity to grow some herbs.
“We spoke with the local 4-H (program coordinator) and she wants to do summer programs in there,” Gottlob said. “It sounds like it will be utilized significantly.”
As for the agriculture department, Gottlob envisions teaching students seed propagation, plant development, plant stressors and herbicide use and its impacts.
“We can compare seed spacing and raise plants in clear tubes or glass pots to check out root development,” he added.
Gottlob said the greenhouse, at 24- by 40 feet and stationed at the southeast corner of the middle-high school at Sibley, will be formatted similarly to one at Unity Christian High School in Orange City, Iowa, with both vegetables and flowering plants grown in the greenhouse.
In addition to peppers and tomatoes, more than a dozen floral varieties will be grown in the greenhouse. The hope is to have enough success with the flowers to be able to host a small plant sale each spring.
“We intend to use it during the school year, and the 4-H
program can use it during the summer if they see fit,” Gottlob said. “It’s got a lot of possibilities; it’s just a work in progress.”
Gottlob said the delays in construction have been a lesson for students who are already excited about working with plants.
“Sometimes you experience roadblocks
in life and sometimes you’ve just got to keep plowing through them,” he said.
Instead of being in the greenhouse this winter, he’s had students do other projects instead.
“While we don’t have the greenhouse, we are dedicating more time to community service projects,” he said.
