New era for manroland sheetfedIt's barely three months since the British industrialist Tony Langley bought the sheetfed division of
insolvent manroland AG. On the eve of drupa 2012 the eponymous owner, Chairman & CEO of the
highly successful engineering group he founded more than 35 years ago, gives his impression of his
latest venture as the first 100 days with manroland approach and talks about how he manages a
group which employs over 4,500 people, whilst keeping his finger on the pulse of every one of the
70 plus businesses that comprise this diverse and remarkable engineering group.

Tony Langley
What have your priorities been during these first three monthssince you acquired the manroland sheetfed business?The same as with every other business we have acquired in the
past. The first priority is to let the company's trading partners
know what the new owner is about. Langley is a complete
unknown in the sector, as it was with the other businesses we
have acquired, so I think it important that the company’s
customers and suppliers know who is behind manroland
sheetfed. The main way we do this is to via the group’s Annual
Report & Accounts, which we publish in brochure format that
includes a profile section on each of our divisions. This can be
downloaded from the langleyholdings.com website but this year
we printed several thousand hard copies and the sales people are
being supplied with these to hand to customers as they visit
them. I think that stakeholders in all of our businesses have a
right to know who is ultimately behind the company they are
engaged with and what we stand for. This kind of transparency
gives a certain impression about the sort of organization we are.

Apprentices at manroland sheetfed GmbH in Offenbach turned
out in force recently for this group photo to show the world that
their company is looking to the future. Over 100 youngsters
lined up with their Head of Training, Albrecht Völz, to send a clear
message that manroland is committed to manufacturing
presses long term - and will make sure it has the specialized skills
to do so for many years to come.

Alfred Rothlaender, the veteran German manufacturing man
brought in by Langley to head the Offenbach business, following

manroland sheetfed business, Herr Alfred Rothlaender has been
appointed as head of manroland sheetfed GmbH.
Herr Rothlaender (66) was formerly head of machinery builder
Claudius Peters near
Hamburg when Langley
acquired the business in
2001. He went on to
head the Piller Group, a
producer of heavy
electrical systems for
data centers near
Hanover, between 2005
and 2008, following
Langley’s acquisition of
that business, before
retiring in the middle of
2010.
But it was to be a short
retirement, the industry
veteran kept in touch with his former boss and said that he was
ready to come back should Langley make a further acquisition in
Germany. Rothlaender knows exactly how Langley businesses
work and is a vastly experienced MD who will oversee the
transition between the former institutional management style
of manroland AG to a more flexible and leaner way of doing
things. ■■
Young manrolanders
manroland sheetfed training school apprentices with Mr Völz, Head of Training
Westmont, Illinois – Michael Mugavero, a well-known
industry professional with extensive background in capital
equipment sales and printing plant operation management
has been named the manroland sheetfed Managing
Director/CEO for the United States and Canada.
Mugavero states “We were driven to simplify. By flattening
our organization we dramatically improved internal
efficiencies; thereby creating a new leaner, more responsive
and empowered market facing organization to ensure our
customers receive world class products and services, with
customer satisfaction as the key metric. In light of the
economic challenges the market has faced in recent times,
we believe a more engaged consultative approach will
translate into helping customers make better strategic
investment decisions and achieving better bottom line
results“.
Mugavero initially joined manroland Sheetfed in 1992 and
after three years at another press manufacturer, rejoined the
company in 2007. He has served as a Regional Sales
Manager, General Manager, Vice President of Sales and now
Managing Director of the North American organization.

the company's apprentice program had not been affected by the
insolvency of manroland AG and that the program would
continue with the current level of intake for the next three years
at least. “We need highly skilled craftsmen to build the best
German presses and those skills are not acquired overnight” said

The company recruits around 25 new trainees each year and
currently employs around 1000 people in Offenbach, including
more than 100 trainees. Worldwide, manroland sheetfed
employs more than 2000 people via its network of over 40
subsidiaries, which provide sales and aftermarket services to an

Utah Paperbox invests withmanroland againUtah Paperbox is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newest
manroland press, a Drupa model R907-6 LTTLVV, 56” 7 color
Double Coater double extension UV machine. The latest
addition to Utah Paperbox’s pressroom is a massive 115 foot
long printing press system scheduled to arrive at their Salt Lake
City, USA facility in June 2012.

and in another manroland press based on its reputation, and on
the print quality and reliability of our existing equipment.
manroland has taken care of us extremely well and we look

press, to be installed in a new Leed (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) certified building, will allow us to
continue to grow our company and provide our customers with

to run the company that traces its roots back to 1914.
The double coater will allow Utah Paperbox to further enhance
the products they manufacture and allow them to expand into
new markets. To produce in a more environmentally friendly way
the press was equipped with InlineColorPilot to maintain color
consistency and reduce waste sheets, print-network software to
further reduce make-ready time, printcom roller coverings and
printcom blankets, all of which are crafted to provide optimum
print results. The press also has a suite of QuickChange options
to allow for quicker make-ready and press cleanup.
The new press will complement a R907-6 LV and two R700
machines that Utah Paperbox currently operates. Later this year
manroland will relocate the three existing presses to the new
expanded facility. The manroland PRINTVALUE® team is the
most qualified and has the best expertise to move and reinstall
manroland equipment.
“Utah Paperbox is environmentally aware and environmentally
active. Our goal is to reduce or footprint by 33 % from 2008 to
2015, we are accomplishing this with a new building that is leed
certified, using solar energy, reducing the number of pumps and
blowers in the plant, installing a central chiller for the complete
plant as well as recycling everything possible, and our

Bruggeman & Desouter Belgium chooses manrolandSix colour press ROLAND 506 LV speeds production
Anyone making a big investment, does not make a rash decision.
Neither does Willy Geldof, printing and planning manager at the
packaging company Bruggeman & Desouter in Belgium. When
purchasing the new ROLAND 506 LV, six-colour sheet-fed press
he consulted many suppliers. In a battle of the Titans he was
taken from one demonstration to another. But manroland won.
Specialist in creative packaging
What do the packaging of Godiva, the chocolate gift boxes of
Bongo and the DVD boxes of Midsomer Murders have in
common? Their birthplace: Bruggeman & Desouter in
Meulebeke, who are a European market leader for the
production of rigid packaging boxes. Willy Geldof comments:
“Our core activity? Upgrading Packaging. With our attractive and
creative boxes we provide products with an added value. We
make sure they catch the eye of the consumer.”
From design to finish - the total package
“That is fairly unique within the packaging industry.” Willy Geldof
says: “First we develop the design of the box. Then we print the
sheets, ready for cutting. Then it is up to the adhesive and
folding machines to really make the packaging come to life. It is
an extensive process that is managed well by our 60 employees.”
Convincing manroland demonstration
A company that claims a top position on the European market
should boast the equivalent standard in machines. So during his
search for a new sheet-fed press Willy Geldof was diligent with
his research. “We listened to many suppliers. One by one they
tried to convince us with a demonstration of their press. The
manroland representative took us to the Print Technology Center
in Offenbach. There we were allowed to test the ROLAND 506 LV
extensively. The astonishing results decided the battle:
manroland was the best.”
Printing with conventional and UV ink
Now the press is running at full speed. “What can it do? A lot!”
states Willy Geldof. “The ROLAND 506 LV prints with both
conventional and UV ink. That is killing two birds with one stone.
If the customer chooses UV ink his printed matter will be done in
a jiffy – thanks to the built-in drying unit. The six coaters can
handle sheets with a maximum size of 59 x 74 centimeters. The
thickness may vary between 0.06 and 1.00 millimetres.”
Increased production thanks to built-in lacquer unit
If you sell exclusive packaging boxes, you should guarantee a
top-level finish. And Bruggeman & Desouter does just that: with
the inline lacquer unit of the ROLAND 506 LV. Willy Geldof adds:
“Customers choose a normal dispersion lacquer that provides
additional protection or an exclusive UV lacquer that provides
the packaging with a magnificent gloss. Due to the built-in
coating unit, the lacquer finish occurs during continuous
printing resulting in no time loss and a much higher
performance.”
ColorPilot: less spoilage, less waste
The new sheet-fed press is also good for the environment thanks
to ColorPilot D+F. Willy Geldof explains: “That is a control system
that carries out densitometric and spectral measurements. It
allows us to quickly find the right colours for every print order.
The result? Reduced set-ups, spoilage and a limited ecological
footprint.”
PressManager Smart: high-speed presetting of the ink
Bruggeman & Desouter doesn’t accept anything less than
perfection, which is why Willy Geldof also chose PressManager
Smart. “This program calculates how much ink is needed for the
prepress PPF-files. It also prepares them for printing. For
example, repeat tasks are set up very quickly on the sheet-fed
press. This means PressManager Smart saves us a lot of time
when setting the ink.”
Extra service provides peace of mind
Bruggeman & Desouter is and always will be a packaging
company, not a printer. Willy Geldof says: “Because we have only
one sheet-fed press, it is important we keep it running at all
times.” As such he played it safe and also specified TelePresence.
“This means that we can call or email manroland at any time. If
there are problems or questions, we receive help quickly because
thanks to an online program the technicians can detect and
analyse possible errors from a remote location and provide us
with a solution. No valuable time is lost. It really is service with a

On 6 March 2012. manroland sheetfed GmbH announced that it
has acquired the sheetfed business and assets of manroland
Great Britain Ltd.
A new company, manroland sheetfed (UK) Ltd was established
and began trading from the same premises in Mitcham, south
west London on that day with 37
employees. Adam Robotham (38) who
joined manroland in 1998 as
Commercial Sales Manager and was
promoted to sheetfed Sales Director last
year, has been announced as Managing
Director.
A HQ spokesman for manroland
sheetfed GmbH said in Germany: “We
are delighted to have been able to bring
the uncertainty over our UK operations to an end and we thank
our many valued UK customers for their patience while the

Prindor reduces wastage ofcold foil by 55% manroland Canada win environmentalaward
manroland Canada recently received a Bronze award for “Most
Environmentally Progressive Printing Technology” at the
Canadian Printing Awards.
The manroland entry “Cold Foil Indexing with an InlineFoiler
Prindor" demonstrated the considerable savings achieved in
unused foil material with every rotation of the printing cylinders.
Result - The function of indexing allows for the stopping of the
foil web while the cylinder gaps pass. This equates to an 18.4%
reduction in foil consumption and in combination with the multi
reel capabilities of the InlineFoiler Prindor, the reduction of cold
foil during the application process was reduced by more than
55%. Many print jobs have only to be enhanced in certain areas
of the printed sheet and with the multi-reel-capability, the
customer is able to only apply cold foil in specific areas. However
with the combination of multi-reel and indexing more than 55%
of cold foil can be saved. ■■

subsidiaries worldwide, is sold to British industrialist Tony Langley and the engineering group he controls, Langley Holdings PLC.
2012: (7 February) Merger clearance is received from the German Bundeskartellamt and manroland sheetfed GmbH begins
trading. During the insolvency around 1000 employees have been dismissed at the Offenbach headquarters and
manufacturing plant. In a moving address to the assembled Offenbach workforce of around 1000 remaining staff, speaking in
English through a translator, Langley heralds “the beginning of a new era”, pledging long term commitment and evoking John F
Kennedy’s famous Berlin speech by stating: “Ich bin ein Rolander”. The takeover is universally welcomed.
2012>: The market for printing presses has seen unprecedented turmoil in recent years but manroland sheetfed GmbH,
producer of the “Porsche" of printing presses, expects to be back in profit within the year and has maintained capacity to step
production back up when market conditions eventually improve. Meanwhile the company has maintained its research and
development program throughout and will showcase at drupa 2012. ■■

“Our four ROLAND 700 five colour presses with lacquer enable us
to add value. Their main advantages are: flexibility and speed,
with consistent reliable quality,” Comments Rob Meijer,
responsible for sales and quality management at Drukkerij
Roelofs. “We are a manroland-house and these machines are
highly suited to the use of FM grid based Sirocolor creating a wider
colour gamut for optimal print results.”
Drukkerij Roelofs, Enschede, has been running the new ROLAND
705LV, five colour press with coater and a print size of 72 x 102 cm,
since September 2010. It replaced the last of the operation’s two
manroland four colour presses. Now four nearly identical printing
presses are responsible for the company’s production of brochures,
product guides, corporate annual reports, colour cards, magazines
and posters.
Pre-press
This press uniformity has streamlined the pre-press configuration
considerably. As a result the company uses one Computer-to-Plate
system, one plate type and one punching system. “Planning has
become a lot smoother”, says Rob Meijer. “All orders fit on every
press.”
Quality
According to Meijer the preference for manroland is based on
quality. “Just as bad cars are still being produced, there are also
bad presses. The difference is in the detail.” Using 10 μ (0.010 mm)
FM grids and the self developed Sirocolour colour management
system, Drukkerij Roelofs is a specialist in optimum reproduction
of colours and detail. For example, art books or colour swatches for
the paint industry.” When reproducing a wide colour gamut the
quality of the manroland presses is unbeatable.”
Meijer doesn’t say whether this can be traced back to the stable
double drive that only these presses have been equipped with, but
simply adds: “The ROLAND 700 clearly prints more beautifully.”
Five colours plus coating
With the use of a fifth colour – usually orange – Sirocolor offers a
wider colour range than the traditional CMYK-model. “For these
runs we use the fifth unit to create prints comparable to
hexachrome. Additionally, the fifth unit is often used for spot
varnish. We also need the extra coater as 80% of our work is now
finished with dispersion coating. The coating does not attach to
the varnish, which causes the so called ‘drip-off effect’.”
Black numbers
Drukkerij Roelofs’ strategy is proving profitable, enabling the
company to reinvest. “We belong to the small group of companies
in the industry that are still ‘in the black’,” says Meijer. He traces
this success back to a permanent striving for optimum efficiency
and a high level of quality, throughout the operation from print
production, to a very high service level. “We deliver high quality
print 24 hours per day. And...we keep our promises!” ■■

New era for manroland sheetfed thousands of customers to visit the stand and I can’t hope to
meet even a fraction of them personally. As a parent company
we are very much behind the scenes of all our companies and it’s
the guys that know the products and the markets intimately
who are customer facing. That said, I dare say I will meet some
customers, which I do enjoy from time to time.
The Langley group will have over $1 billion of sales this year. Youare known for being very hands on, how do you manage it all? Well you’re right about being hands on, particularly in the early
stages of a business becoming part of the group, although I do
tend to step back once the business is settled in, usually after
about a year. During the early days we establish our reporting
structures and that helps me enormously. This is not only
financial reporting, but commentary from the head of every
business unit we have on every topic involved in running a
capital equipment business and these are all in exactly the same
format, whether the business is involved in packaging
equipment for the food sector, cranes for nuclear power plants,
UPS [uninterruptible power supply] systems for financial
institutions, or welding systems for automobile producers; or
printing presses. Our businesses, although diverse in their
products and markets, are all essentially very similar and the BUR
[business unit report] enables me to understand what is going
on in every one of the 70 or more business units we now have.
Most importantly every month it puts me in direct contact with
the individuals that are running our businesses.
And you read every one of these “BUR’s”?Every one, every month.
“Our businesses, although diverse in theirproducts and markets, are all essentially verysimilar…”
Pre-tax profits for 2011 were around $100 million, and no debt.
That was a very successful year for Langley Holdings, how is 2012
looking?
The group started the year with good order books in all divisions
and Q1 results were ahead of target. The group is still debt free,
despite funding the manroland deal and currently has around
$250 million of cash on hand. Order intake and cash flow have
both remained strong through January - April and everything is
pointing towards another good year.
Better than 2011?
From today’s perspective yes, I expect so.

And how do you expect manroland sheetfed to performfinancially in its first year under your ownership?We have built a model for manroland to be modestly profitable
on about one third of the revenues it enjoyed four years ago. I
think that is realistic in the current market and it’s on track so far.
The business is correctly structured for that level and as we
acquired all of the assets of a business capable of three times the
level we expect to see in this first year, if there is any increase on
what we have planned, the business is capable of managing
that.

In parallel we map out what needs to be done in terms of
bringing the sort of change that we as a private group are
bringing to the business. The first 100 days are the time that we
get over 95% of the changes we are going to announce and if all
are not implemented in that period, then at least they are well
on the way.
What changes are you making at manroland?Well first of all we stop managing by consensus, which is very
much the big company way. It wastes time, nothing gets done
very quickly and it's just not the way we do things. We set out a
central strategy with management then help them implement
it. We have a pretty good idea about what makes a successful
engineering business and just get on with it. Those that can
adapt to our style do so and those that can’t leave, but that is
usually very few. The vast majority of the management we took
over with this business were fully behind our strategy, the few
that weren’t have already gone.
Then we look at headcount, that’s the biggest cost in the
businesses and once that is about right then it’s on to every
other cost line, there's no single thing that in itself is
fundamental but in total the changes we bring are enormous.
We look at every single aspect of the business and basically
question whether it makes sense. The devil is in the detail. In
large, formerly institutional-style managed businesses like this
and the others we have acquired in the past, there are ways of
doing things that to the owner of any SME spending his own
money would seem well, stupid. Many companies over a certain
size seem to lose touch with the value of money. Our job is to put
the ones that we acquire back in touch.

So is the headcount "about right" or are there further staffreductions to come?I was satisfied early on that staff numbers were there or there
abouts in Germany after the restructuring during the AG
insolvency, but there has been some house-keeping to do in
some of the subsidiaries which weren’t part of that. That
exercise has now largely been completed.
What about R&D, has that been cut back and if so, how canmanroland possibly maintain its reputation as a technologyleader?
For sure manroland sheetfed is spending less now than it did in
the past, but this is one of the first things we look at in a
business we acquire and without exception, those businesses
who boasted about how much they spent on R&D were
invariably littered with projects that came to nothing. More
money wasted. Why? Because they lost sight of what the market
actually needs and were so arrogant that they became
disconnected from what the market and even their own sales
people were telling them. We take R&D very seriously and in all
of our divisions we have a strongly focussed R&D program that
ensures the business will remain at the forefront of its field.

What has the reaction of the employees been to your takeover ofmanroland sheetfed?Extremely positive, in fact the most positive yet. That's probably
something to do with the circumstances the company was in
and our not stepping in until the eleventh hour, but nevertheless
the goodwill towards Langley has been tremendous and there is
a very real sense that the company is beginning a new era.

And the competition?Certain ones and one in particular, have been really quite
aggressive but I think the business will manage whatever they
can throw at it. Manroland’s competitors have no idea just how
efficient this company is becoming under our stewardship and it
seems to me that they all have some pretty fundamental issues
of their own to address. Prices of presses have collapsed to the
point that anyone can see that the manufacturers cannot carry
on as they did indefinitely and in my view those who continue to
sell at a loss and continue to spend heavily whilst only tinkering
with the cost base, still have their day of reckoning to come.

Will you be attending drupa?
Yes, of course. I will be there for a few of days before the opening
and plan to meet at least the majority of our people that are
coming in from around the world before the show opens,
hopefully all of them. There are over 40 manroland subsidiaries
world-wide, plus numerous independent dealers and agents.
Drupa is one of the few occasions they all converge at the same
time and as it will be quite a while before I manage to get
around to meeting our people on their own turf, it’s a good
opportunity to meet in person. After that I will be visiting the
show.

successful restructuring
Thanks to the customers’ deep trust and their strong support,
manroland is back in full operation mode with a new company
structure firmly in place. Successes have been recorded on various
fronts, including manroland South East Asia.
In Thailand, Kor Karn Pim Thien Kwang Co., Ltd. placed an order for a
ROLAND 704 without any hesitation. Located in Bangkok, Kor Karn
Pim Thien Kwang Co., Ltd. is a long-established commercial printing
factory, where premium printing quality is the top priority. That is
the reason why 20 years ago they installed their first ROLAND 700
in Thailand. Needless to say, the press has consistently met the
company’s high requirements on print quality.
Impressed with the performance of the ROLAND 700, Kor Karn Pim
Thien Kwang Co., Ltd. this year placed an order for a ROLAND 704 to
meet its growing business needs and the first Thai printer to
purchase a ROLAND 700 after manroland’s successful restructuring.
When the new press is installed in August, Kor Karn Pim Thien
Kwang Co., Ltd. will significantly boost its printing capacity and stay
strong in the competitive Thai printing market.

customers in Malaysia. C M Printing Sdn Bhd, located in Rawang,
Malaysia, is the biggest beer label printer in South East Asia.
Specializing in the printing of packaging cartons and labels, it
exports its products and services to various countries in Asia, such
as India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand,
Cambodia, Laos, Nepal and Vietnam. As a prestigious packaging
printer who places much emphasis on print quality and
productivity, C M Printing Sdn Bhd was the first Malaysian outfit to
install an Ultima ROLAND 700. The installation of the LTT R707 LV
was commissioned on time and successfully put into production in
December 2011. C M Printing Sdn Bhd was delighted with the
quality and productivity of its first Ultima press on completion of
the installation.
A new customer, Percetakan Konta Sdn Bhd, a leading one-stop
customer-oriented packaging printer in Penang, Malaysia placed an
order for a ROLAND 705 LV. The new press was successfully installed
and, Percetakan Konta Sdn Bhd are very satisfied with the premium
print quality and efficiency of the ROLAND 705 LV, which meets the
increasing demands of their customers.
Founded in 1988, Ginhua PSN Printing (M) Sdn. Bhd, a renowned
packaging printer located in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and an
established manroland customer. They already operate two
ROLAND 804 size 7B presses and in an effort to diversify their
product range to meet market demands, they recently purchased a
ROLAND 706 LV 3B Plus, scheduled to be put into production by
mid-April.

Continued success for manroland South East Asia
Strine Printing in York PA, USA upgrades an existing R907-7 LTTLV
with an Ink roller blowing device to enhance the performance of the
press and for the removal of ink mist when running UV. The upgrade
will widen the operation window of running UV inks by controlling
excess dampening solution in non-image areas and roller ends. This
upgrade will make it easier to operate the press when running water
sensitive UV inks while at the same time managing any ink misting
that may occur. This upgrade is possible as much forethought is
placed into all manroland press designs ensuring technologies and
systems may be upgraded throughout the course of the presses

Global sales and service agreements between manroland web
systems GmbH and manroland sheetfed GmbH, the companies
owned by the German Possehl group and British industrialist
Tony Langley, have been announced today.
Over 40 sales and service companies were acquired along with
the Langley deal, while subsidiaries in India and Australasia were
acquired by Possehl. Peter Kuisle for manroland web systems
GmbH and Rafael Penuela for manroland sheetfed GmbH, jointly
announced today that they have now agreed on a global sales
and service cooperation.
manroland web systems GmbH have established own
subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, operating from Possehl
premises in London; and in the United States. In the US,
manroland web systems Inc. began trading from the same
premises in Chicago it now shares with manroland sheetfed Inc
and in the UK, manroland sheetfed (UK) Ltd continues to trade
from the same premises in Mitcham.
Elsewhere, agency agreements are being established with
sheetfed subsidiaries to represent manroland web systems in
Mexico and South America (except Chile); in most of the
European countries (Ireland, Finland, Benelux, France, Italy, Spain,
Portugal); in Central & Eastern Europe (except Poland) and
Greater China (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan).
Web systems subsidiaries in Australasia and India will continue
to represent manroland sheetfed in those territories.

Tianyi Printing Co., Ltd. have also placed new orders for

CommentThe print machinery sector has been hit hard in recent years by
the double whammy of demand for traditional print media
declining due to the growth of digital media and to the credit
crunch taking a heavy toll on the printing industry’s ability to
re-invest in capital equipment. Net result, a collapse in demand
for new machinery, really hurting the Germans who lead the
sector. But it’s not all bad news, demand for print in the
packaging industry is on the up and so is traditional print in the
BRIC and other developing countries, so arguably pretty much
flat-lining or better going forward.
The challenge facing the German leaders in the sector
(Manroland, Heidelberger and Koenig & Bauer) has been to
adapt quickly enough to the here and now. All have strong after-
markets, maintaining the thousands of machines already out
there so dependable revenues from that area, but in recent
years orders for new machines have slowed to a trickle and
these ships are big and slow to turn – in normal circumstances.
In manroland’s case, being formerly owned by venture
capitalists, the call for cash to restructure the business fell on
deaf ears and the management were left with no alternative
than to file for bankruptcy and this seems to have been as a
blessing in disguise. Administrator Werner Schneider was quick
to re-act when he was appointed on 25 November 2011,
reducing headcounts in the web division in Augsberg by several
hundreds and in sheet fed by a similar number in Offenbach,
along with wage reductions for those remaining and all this
with the agreement of the labor organizations - a neat trick in
just over 2 months, especially in Germany. But when it comes to,
Germans are pragmatic people, rightly proud of their
engineering heritage and at manroland they have rallied to
make what’s left of the leviathan that was manroland AG
attractive to new investors.
Both of manroland’s divisions are now right-sized for the current
market and maintain the capacity to step back up when credit
to buy these machines starts to ease. Possehl and Langley are
experienced industrial investors and were quick to see this.
Stripped of the burden of disproportionate costs, each are
forecasting profits this year on revenue down by around two
thirds on the €3 billion or so manroland enjoyed just a few years
ago. That must seem like a dream to their competitors, how
they will adapt remains to be seen. ■■

3 ROLAND 900 XXL for France
The French market enthusiastically embraces XXL solutions, -
both for printing and finishing.
In recent months manroland France has recorded three
important orders once again demonstrating the superiority of
the ROLAND 900 XXL within this segment.
The first order, a 5 colour1300 x 1850mm, went to Print SA in
Villeneuve d’Ascq. It was equipped with APL - Automatic Plate
Loading (100% automatic plate loading) and ColorPilot (for
automatic control of inking devices).
The second machine, also a 5 colour 1300 x 1850mm, was
destined to Imprimerie Pollina, Lucon. It includes an Inline-
ColorPilot , which is integrated in the paper flow of the press to
check the sheets inline (eliminating the need to remove sheets
during production).
The last machine, a 4 colour 1300 x 1850mm was delivered to
Ouest Affiches in La Bazoge to replace a Planeta. It joined two
other 1300 x 1850 mm manroland’s at Ouest Affiches, enabling
the operation to offer clients a smooth and responsive
production of a broad scope of products.
manroland France has also provided Pollina with an XXL finishing
solution in the form of a fully automatic size 8 BASA cutting line
from Baumann.
This triple XXL press order confirms manroland France's presence
across all the available sizes as four new ROLAND 500 (mainly
590 x 740 mm) and four new ROLAND 700 (740 x 1040 mm)
were also installed in France at the end of last year. These orders
position manroland squarely in the segment of high added value
with options such as UV ink and coating as well as InlineFoiler
equipment for cold foiling. ■■
Shinkosya, one of manroland’s JDF fully networked reference
site, is a CIP IPPI (International Print Production Innovation)
award winner. Not one to rest on their laurels, they decided to
increase productivity by installing a ROLAND 704 DirectDrive,
where its performance on thin paper has truly impressed
Shinkosya.
The average job length of Shinkosya is 1,500 sheets. manroland’s
DirectDrive completes 60 jobs in one shift and improves the
productivity by 30 percent. In addition, Shinkosya specializes in
thin paper packaging. With this packaging, they could achieve
9,000 sheets per hour with 0.045 thin paper in perfecting mode.
What’s more, they have been retrofitted by the Integration Pilot
data collected from all the existing presses to have an accurate
overview of production. With the advanced technological
support from manroland, they will be able to reduce the waste
rate, increase profit and stay competitive in Japan’s highly
competitive printing industry.

30 April, 2012 – manroland sheetfed and Landa
Corporation today announced a strategic partnership
whereby Landa will provide manroland sheetfed with its
ground-breaking Nanographic Printing™ technology.
Landa Nanographic Printing employs ink ejectors to
create the digital ink images which are applied to the
printing stock in a process that can operate at extremely
high speeds and creates images offering remarkable
abrasion and scratch resistance. Most notably, it can print
on any off-the-shelf substrate, from coated and uncoated
paper stocks to recycled carton; from newsprint to plastic
packaging films - all without requiring any kind of pre-
treatment or special coating - and no post-drying. Adding
to this cost benefit is the fact that Nanographic images
are only 500 nanometres thick - about half the thickness
