This Sunday morning, March 28, 1st day of Pesach, we will welcome Chazzan David GuberChazzan David GuberChazzan David GuberChazzan David Guber who will lead us in davening for hallel and tefillat tal. Born in South Africa, Chazzan Guber continues his family's heritage of three generations of Chazzanim: his father, Chazzan Shlomo Guber, and his grandfather, Chazzan Avraham Guber, who was the chief Chazzan in Russia. After serving in the IDF as a paratroopers combat fighter, he studied chazzanut with his father and Prof. Leonid Sabat. At the beginning of 2020 he ended his tenure at Beth Emeth, and started his search to only daven in synagogues that emulate the places where he grew up. Chazzan Guber’s goal is to continue his family's legacy by davening in great orthodox shuls in Toronto, with true kavanah. Thank you to Beverley & Sam Cohen for sponsoring Chazzan Guber’s visit.

THE BEAUTY OF THE OLD WITH THE FRESHNESS OF THE NEWTHE BEAUTY OF THE OLD WITH THE FRESHNESS OF THE NEWTHE BEAUTY OF THE OLD WITH THE FRESHNESS OF THE NEWTHE BEAUTY OF THE OLD WITH THE FRESHNESS OF THE NEW

It seems absurd to write about the weekly Torah reading while Pesach preparations currently occupy most of the space in our minds. However, perhaps a message related to Parshat Tzav can serve as brief reprieve from the tension involved in turning over our kitchens and completing the arduous task of Pesach cleaning. And for extra points, I will even connect it to the Seder!

Parshat Tzav begins by describing the mitzvah of Terumat HaDeshen, or “lifting of the ashes.” While it is a privilege to perform any service in the temple, this mitzvah seems particularly ordinary. Fully dressed in the priestly garments, the Kohen would scoop a shovel’s worth of ashes that accumulated on the altar from the previous day’s sacrifices and place the ashes on the side of the mizbeach. Afterward, the Kohen would remove his priestly garments and deposit the ashes outside the camp in a process known as “Hotzaat HaDeshen,” or “removal of the ashes.”

What purpose does the mitzvah of Terumat HaDeshen serve? The process seems like the Temple’s version of cleaning oP the grill after a barbecue. However, Terumat HaDeshen has the status of avodah and therefore can only be performed by a Kohen. Furthermore, the Talmud in Pesachim 26a, indicates that the ashes have a unique sanctity. Unlike other objects involved in the Temple service which can be used freely after they have fulfilled their purpose, the ashes from the Teurmat HaDeshen retain their sanctity even after they have been removed from the altar. What idea does this sanctity represent?

Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch (Vayikra 6:3-4) argues that Terumat HaDeshen and Hotzaat HaDeshen represent the careful balance between our commitment to continuity of the past and our focus on the future. Just as when presenting a flour oPering the Kohen would take a fistful of flour and burn it on the altar, before beginning the new day’s service the Kohen would lift a shovel’s worth of ashes representing the service of the previous day. The Kohen would place the ashes specifically on the eastern side of the mizbeach near the entrance to the courtyard, to signify to the people that the service of today can’t take place until we pay homage to the service of yesterday. Furthermore, Terumat HaDeshen indicates that “the new day doesn’t bring new goals.” Just as yesterday, our goal today is to worship by Hashem performing the exact same service. In the words of Rabbi Hirsch: “The last of the Jewish grandchildren stands where his first ancestors already stood, and each new day adds his contribution to fulfilling the one role assigned to all generations of the House of Israel”. The ashes retain their sanctity because each day’s service continues to build on the work of the previous day.

Nevertheless, the Kohen’s job was not yet finished. After Terumat HaDeshem, the Kohen performed Hotzaat HaDeshen by removing the “ashes of yesterday” from today’s temple service. While our general goals may remain the same, the way we pursue those goals needs to adapt to new circumstances. Furthermore, we can’t imprison ourselves to the failures and disappointments of the past. Each day begins on a new foundation.

Every Seder we perform the same rituals. We eat the same matzot, maror, karpas, and charoset. We tell the same basic stories and sing the same basic songs. But we need not feel ashamed or feel like we are “out of touch” for carrying on age old traditions. The beauty of tradition lies in our appreciation and loyalty to those who came before us. Nevertheless, we can be creative and look for new ways to infuse our Sedarim with new meaning and vitality. May we all enjoy a safe and healthy Pesach by joining the Beauty of the Old with the Freshness of the New.
