ATEMC01 Energy Monitoring System Using Sensor Networks in Residential

Houses

The energy consumption of consumer electronics has been increasing over the past half century. Due to the growing importance of energy saving, many researches about the energy savings of information and communication technology have been presented. Providing residents with information on their energy use has become a feasible option to promote energy savings in the residential sector. In this paper, a home energy management system, particularly an energy monitoring system using sensor networks, is described. The authors designed and developed a smart power strip sensor network and evaluated its accuracy and energy saving efficiency.

ATEMC02 Pricing mechanisms for cooperative state estimation

The conflict between cooperation in distributed state estimation and the resulting leakage of private state information (competitive privacy) is studied for an interconnected two regional transmission organizations (RTOs) model of the grid. Using an information theoretic rate-distortion-leakage (RDL) tradeoff model, each RTO communicates at a rate chosen to optimize an objective function that is dependent on two opposing quantities: a rate-distortion based pricing function that encourages cooperation, and a leakage function that impedes it. It is shown that strictly non-zero pricing incentives are required to achieve non-trivial target distortions

ATEMC05 Design optimization of TRIAC-dimmable AC-DC converter in

LED lighting

A LED lighting system becomes a promising alternative as a substitute of fluorescent and incandescent lights due to high light efficacy and long lifetime. The proposed AC-DC converter implements TRIAC dimming with smooth brightness control. While controlling TRIAC dimming, LED current is regulated by primary side regulation (PSR) to save BOM cost such as LED current sensing circuit and opto-coupler. Compact active damper is also applied to stabilize converter operation during dimmer firing with better efficiency and minimized components. The linear frequency control reduces conduction loss and guarantees DCM operation in the wide range of output voltage, which shows excellent power factor correction in single stage flyback topology. The proposed TRIAC-dimming PSR converter has been experimentally verified in 7W LED lighting system

ATEMC13 Volcanic Environments: Robots for Exploration and Measurement

The study of volcanic activity is important from a scientific point of view as it allows for a better understanding of one of the most spectacular geological phenomena and of the working principles that are at the basis of geophysics. Furthermore, there are numerous events that directly result from volcanic eruptions and that affect many populations. Therefore, improving the prediction methods of eruptive phenomena would be of great benefit. There are more than 1,500 potentially active volcanoes in the world, and roughly 10% of the world's population live in areas directly threatened by volcanoes. In all of these areas, volcanoes have a strong influence on many day-to-day activities. The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland in April 2010 caused the cancellation of more than 100,000 European flights and, consequently, left more than 10 million passengers stranded. Each year, on a graver note, many regions in the world are destroyed or heavily damaged by lava or pyroclastic flows, in some cases, resulting in numbers of casualties that could have been avoided with the improvement of early warning systems.

ATEMC15 Intelligent Traction Control Model for Speed Sensor Vehicles

in Computer-Based Transit System

In this paper, a real-time intelligent traction control model for speed sensor vehicles in computer-based transit systems is proposed. Using the Bayesian decision theory, the model analyzes speed sensor data to learn and classify the train traction conditions (i.e., spin/slip, normal, and slide) that are required for studying vehicle motion patterns. The patterns are applied on the sensor input in real-time format to classify train traction and reduce the error/risk of classification that may cause service interruptions and incidents. The model can enable us to manage a number of state natures (i.e., spin/slip, normal, and slide), features (i.e., delta speed and train speed), and prior knowledge traction conditions. This model engine can be implemented in any programming language in onboard or embedded computers. As a result, the impact of noisy sensors (inaccurate data) and its delays in such a hard real-time control system is mitigated. This conceptual model is applied to a case study with promising results for target and simulation systems

ATEMC18 Electronic Voting Machine - A Review

Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is a simple electronic device used to record votes in place of ballot papers and boxes which were used earlier in conventional voting system. Fundamental right to vote or simply voting in elections forms the basis of democracy. All earlier elections be it state elections or centre elections a voter used to cast his/her favorite candidate by putting the stamp against his/her name and then folding the ballot paper as per a prescribed method before putting it in the Ballot Box. This is a long, time-consuming process and very much prone to errors. This situation continued till election scene was completely changed by electronic voting machine. No more ballot paper, ballot boxes, stamping, etc. all this condensed into a simple box called ballot unit of the electronic voting machine. Because biometric identifiers cannot be easily misplaced, forged, or shared, they are

ATEMC21 Low cost solar ECG with Bluetooth transmitter

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading killer, accounting for 16.7 million or 29.2 per cent of total global deaths every year. The World Health Organization estimates that 60 per cent of the world's cardiac patients will be Indian by 2010. The reported prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adult surveys has risen 4-fold over the last 40 years and even in rural areas the prevalence has doubled over the past 30 years. The Electrocardiograph (ECG) is a diagnostic instrument which measures the electrical activity of the heart, providing valuable information of cardiac disorders like infarction, Atherosclerosis, etc. ECG instruments used in hospitals are bulky, work on line voltage which makes the ECG waveform distorted and an isolation amplifier is needed for patient's safety making it expensive thus cannot be used in underdeveloped areas. We have developed an inexpensive portable solar powered ECG. 63% of all rural households in India do not have electricity and use fuel for lighting. Thus, being solar powered will eliminate its dependence on electricity and can easily be used in areas either with no electricity or with lots of load shedding. The electro-cardiogram will be free from the line frequency noise. Advantage of this equipment is the backup option of charging the batteries using a simple mobile charger. The device is capable of acquiring up to 34 hours of continuous electrocardiogram data at a sample rate of 500 Hz. The ECG is also transmitted to the patient's cell phone or a computer with the help of a Bluetooth transmitter.

processing unit and user interface platform from a bulky personal computer to a smartphone (iPhone) has significantly facilitated its usage by turning it into a true wireless and wearable AT. After implementation of the necessary interfacing hardware and software to allow the smartphone to act as a bridge between the TDS and PWC, the wheelchair navigation performance and associated learning was evaluated in nine able-bodied subjects in five sessions over a 5-week period. Subjects wore magnetic tongue studs over the duration of the study and drove the PWC in an obstacle course with their tongue using three different navigation strategies; namely unlatched, latched, and semiproportional. Qualitative aspects of using the TDS-iPhone-PWC interface were also evaluated via a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. Subjects showed more than 20% improvement in the overall completion time between the first and second sessions, and maintained a modest improvement of ~9% per session over the following three sessions.

limb rehabilitation robotics

This paper presents a new tool for assessment and therapy in post-stroke upper-limb rehabilitation and a new wireless sensor technology to enhance rehabilitation robotics based on the ZigBee network of wearable Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) sensor nodes. These sensor nodes will allow the measurement of kinematic and electrical muscle activity of patients in continuous therapy motion over all body segments as a Body Sensor Network (BSN). The IMU Sensor design was based on a direction-cosine-matrix DCM. The system validation was achieved with an optical motion tracking system in which cameras and IMU sensors recorded upper limb positions simultaneously during a standard gesture of reaching and grasping. The comparison between elbow flexion-extension angle in reaching and grasping movements obtained from both techniques shows equivalence. The

ATEMC24 A Smart Health Monitoring Chair for Nonintrusive Measurement of

Biological Signals

We developed nonintrusive methods for simultaneous electrocardiogram, photoplethysmogram, and ballistocardiogram measurements that do not require direct contact between instruments and bare skin. These methods were applied to the design of a diagnostic chair for unconstrained heart rate and blood pressure monitoring purposes. Our methods were operationalized through capacitively coupled electrodes installed in the chair back that include high-input impedance amplifiers, and conductive textiles installed in the seat for capacitive driven-right-leg circuit configuration that is capable of recording electrocardiogram information through clothing. Photoplethysmograms were measured through clothing using seat mounted sensors with specially designed amplifier circuits that vary in light intensity according to clothing type. Ballistocardiograms were recorded using a film type transducer material, polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF), which was installed beneath the seat cover. By simultaneously measuring signals, beat-to-beat heart rates could be monitored even when electrocardiograms were not recorded due to movement artifacts. Beat-to-beat blood pressure was also monitored using unconstrained measurements of pulse arrival time and other physiological parameters, and our experimental results indicated that the estimated blood pressure tended to coincide with actual blood pressure measurements. This study demonstrates the feasibility of our method and device for biological signal monitoring through clothing for unconstrained long-term daily health monitoring that does not require user awareness and is not limited by physical activity.

If the dead time is smaller, armature current is continuous; if the dead time is larger, armature current is intermittent. When armature current is continuous, the new mode not only has the advantages of bipolar mode, but also prevents the same side MOSFETs from direct connection. When armature current is intermittent, motor has quicker response than controlled by limited Single polarity mode. This paper presents a framework for ZigBee indoor positioning with an ensemble approach. This approach exploits the complementary advantages of various algorithms, weights the estimation results, and combines them to improve accuracy. This is achieved by dynamically analyzing the diverse patterns of inputs and combining base positioning algorithms with spatial dependent weights. The experiments were conducted in a realistic ZigBee sensor network. Results demonstrated that the proposed approach apparently achieves more accurate location estimation than the compared methods including the gradient-based search, linear squares approximation, multidimensional scaling, fingerprinting method, and a multi-expert system.

ATEMC41 Cooperative Wireless Sensor Environments Supporting Body

Area Networks

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) in recent years have received significant attention, due to their potential for increasing efficiency in healthcare monitoring. Typical sensors used for WBAN are low powered single transceiver devices utilizing a single channel for transmission at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. However, performance of these devices usually degrades when the density of sensors increases. One approach to counter this performance degradation is to exploit multiple channels at the MAC layer, where optimal usage of the channels is achieved through cooperation between the sensor nodes. In this paper we propose a cooperative WBAN environment that supports multi-hop transmission through cooperation involving both environmental sensors and WBAN nodes. Our solution extends the cooperation at the MAC layer to a cross-layered gradient based routing solution that allows interaction between WBAN and environmental sensors in order to ensure data delivery from WBANs to a distant gateway. Extensive simulations for healthcare scenarios have been performed to validate the cooperation at the MAC layer, as well as the cross-layered gradient based routing. Comparisons to other cooperative multi-channel MAC and routing solutions have shown the overall performance improvement of the proposed approach evaluated in terms of packet loss, power consumption and delay.

ATEMC49 Leakage Fault Diagnosis for an Internet-Based Three-Tank

System: An Experimental Study

This paper investigates the leakage fault diagnosis problem for a physical Internet-based three-tank system (ITTS). Data from different devices locating at different places communicate with each other via Internet and, due to the limited bandwidth of communication channel, data suffer from delay and/or dropout phenomenon during the transmission. The resulting incomplete signals are utilized for the control and diagnosis purpose, giving rise to a networked control system (NCS). After linearization and discretization of the mathematical model of the three-tank system (TTS), the original nonlinear fault diagnosis problem is converted into a robust leakage fault detection and isolation problem for a linear system with uncertain parameters. The detection problem is then solved by using the robust H_ filter technique and the leakage faults of different tanks are isolated by using the idea of residual contributing degree (RCD). Experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed techniques.

load sharing has largely ignored the effect of wireless communication delay. Study has shown that the time-varying wireless communication delay may have a significant impact on the performance of power inverters. In this work, we aim to fill this gap and study the performance of distributed power inverters under the scenario of wireless-enabled smart microgrids. Then, we propose an optimal controller to overcome the delay problem and to provide a smooth load sharing performance. ATEMC55 Optimal Power Management of Residential Customers in The

Smart Grid

Recently intensive efforts have been made on the transformation of the world's largest physical system, the power grid, into a “smart grid” by incorporating extensive information and communication infrastructures. Key features in such a “smart grid” include high penetration of renewable and distributed energy sources, large-scale energy storage, market-based online electricity pricing, and widespread demand response programs. From the perspective of residential customers, we can investigate how to minimize the expected electricity cost with real-time electricity pricing, which is the focus of this paper. By jointly considering energy storage, local distributed generation such as photovoltaic (PV) modules or small wind turbines, and inelastic or elastic energy demands, we mathematically formulate this problem as a stochastic optimization problem and approximately solve it by using the Lyapunov optimization approach. From the theoretical analysis, we have also found a good tradeoff between cost saving and storage capacity. A salient feature of our proposed approach is that it can operate without any future knowledge on the related stochastic models (e.g., the distribution) and is easy to implement in real time. We have also evaluated

ATEMC59 Rotational Machine Health Monitoring and Fault Detection

Using EMD-Based Acoustic Emission Feature Quantification

Acoustic emission (AE)-signal-based techniques have recently been attracting researchers' attention to rotational machine health monitoring and diagnostics due to the advantages of the AE signals over the extensively used vibration signals. Unlike vibration-based methods, the AE-based techniques are in their infant stage of development. From the perspective of machine health monitoring and fault detection, developing an AE-based methodology is important. In this paper, a methodology for rotational machine health monitoring and fault detection using empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-based AE feature quantification is presented. The methodology incorporates a threshold-based denoising technique into EMD to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the AE bursts. Multiple features are extracted from the denoised signals and then fused into a single compressed AE feature. The compressed AE features are then used for fault detection based on a statistical method. A gear fault detection case study is conducted on a notional split-torque gearbox using AE signals to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology. A fault detection performance

ATEMC67 Designing an Adaptive Acoustic Modem for Underwater Sensor

Networks

There is a growing interest in using underwater networked systems for oceanographic applications. These networks often rely on acoustic communication, which poses a number of challenges for reliable data transmission. The underwater acoustic channel is highly variable; each link can experience vastly different conditions, which change according to environmental factors as well as the locations of the communicating nodes. This makes it difficult to ensure reliable communication. Furthermore, due to the high transmit power, the energy consumed in transmitting data is substantial, which is exacerbated at lower data rates. The main challenge that we address in this article is how to build a system that provides reliable and energy efficient communication in underwater sensor networks. To this end, we propose an adaptive underwater acoustic modem which changes its parameters according to the situation. Market-based electricity pricing provides consumers an opportunity to lower their electric bill by shifting consumption to low price periods. In this paper, we explore how to lower electric bills without requiring consumer involvement using an intelligent charging system, called SmartCharge, and an on-site battery array to store low-cost energy for use during high-cost periods. ATEMC73 Automatic Ambulance Rescue System

Traffic congestion and tidal flow management were recognized as major problems in modern urban areas, which have caused much thwarting for the ambulance. Moreover road accidents in the city have been incessant and to bar the loss of life due to the accidents is even more crucial. To implement this we introduce a scheme called AARS (Automatic ambulance rescue system). The main theme behind this scheme is to provide a smooth flow for the ambulance to reach the hospitals in time and thus minifying the expiration. The idea behind this scheme is to implement a ITS which would control mechanically the traffic lights in the path of the ambulance. The ambulance is controlled by the central unit which furnishes the most scant route to the ambulance and also controls the traffic light according to the ambulance location and thus reaching the hospital safely. The server also determines the location of the accident spot through the sensor systems in the vehicle which encountered the accident and thus the server walks through the ambulance to the spot. This scheme is fully automated, thus it finds the accident spot, controls the traffic lights, helping to reach the hospital in time.

energy supplier. At the supplier end, an energy monitoring system is used to manage all received meter readings, compute the billing cost, update the database and maintain an energy consumption profile for each user. Various alerts and control can also be generated by the supplier. A simple, cost effective and reliable working prototype of complete system has been developed using digital energy meter manufactured by MicroTech Limited, Pakistan to demonstrate an efficient and transparent means of automatic meter reading, billing and notification through the use of GSM network.

ATEMC75 Automatic Measurement and Reporting System of Water

Quality Based on GSM

The traditional method of water quality testing is to collect samples manually and then send them to laboratory for analysis. However, it has been unable to meet the demands of water quality monitoring today. So a set of automatic measurement and reporting system of water quality has been developed. The system consists of multiple sensors of water quality testing, single-chip microcontroller data acquisition module, information transmission module, monitoring center and other accessories. Various parameters of water quality are automatically detected under the control of single chip micro controller all day. The single chip gets the data, and then processes and analyzes them. After that, the data are instantaneously sent to monitoring center by GSM network in the form of SMS. If the water quality is abnormal, the data will be sent to monitoring center and management's mobile in the same way at the same time. It is convenient for management to take corresponding measures timely and be able to detect real-time situation of water quality remotely. The system has realized the automation of water quality monitoring, intelligence of data analyzing and networking of information transferring. It is characterized by advantages of shortcut, accuracy and using manpower and material resources sparingly. The system has widespread application value

ATEMC76 Robust railway crack detection scheme (RRCDS) using LED-

LDR assembly

In India, most of the commercial transport is being carried out by the railway network and therefore, any problems in the same has the capacity to induce major damage to the economy-notwithstanding the societal impact of loss of life or limb. This paper proposes a cost effective yet robust solution to the problem of railway crack detection utilizing a method that is unique in the sense that while it is simple, the idea is completely novel and hitherto untested. The paper discusses the technical and design aspects in detail and also provides the proposed robust crack detection algorithm. The paper also presents the details of the implementation results of the RRCDS utilizing simple components inclusive of a GPS module, GSM Modem and LED-LDR based crack detector assembly. The proposed scheme has been modeled for robust implementation in the Indian scenario

accidents in the city have been incessant and to bar the loss of life due to the accidents is even more crucial. This scheme is fully automated, thus it finds the accident spot, controls the traffic lights, helping to reach the hospital in time.

contrary, smartphone cameras, despite being very powerful sensors, have largely been neglected. In this paper, we introduce a collaborative sensing platform that exploits the cameras of windshield-mounted smartphones. To demonstrate the potential of this platform, we propose several services that it can support, and prototype SignalGuru, a novel service that leverages windshield-mounted smartphones and their cameras to collaboratively detect and predict the schedule of traffic signals, enabling Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA) and other novel applications. Results from two deployments of SignalGuru, using iPhones in cars in Cambridge (MA, USA) and Singapore, show that traffic signal schedules can be predicted accurately. On average, SignalGuru comes within 0.66 s, for pretimed traffic signals and within 2.45 s, for traffic-adaptive traffic signals. Feeding SignalGuru's predicted traffic schedule to our GLOSA application, our vehicle fuel consumption measurements show savings of 20.3 percent, on average

ATEMC81 Mobility Tracking using GPS, WiFi and Cell ID

Capability to track the mobility pattern of children and elders can enable many useful applications. Assisted GPS (AGPS) and Wi-Fi can be used to precisely calculate the location of a person, but AGPS consumes a lot of power and Wi-Fi coverage is often spotty. On the other hand, Cell ID offers ubiquitous coverage in most inhabited environments, low power consumption, but has the disadvantage of lower accuracy. This paper introduces an energy-efficient cellular and AGPS/Wi-Fi tracking system based on the construction of a mobility map from a person's historical location data. A location map consists of a set of crucial locations (CL), personal common locations (PCL), and routes. CL is a point that terminates several routes and PCL is a place where the person spends a lot of time in. The tracking process is divided into four parts: data collection, offline data processing, online tracking, and path reconstruction. With the use of the mobility map, AGPS fixes can be

ATEMC82 Wheelchair Motion Control Guide Using Eye Gaze and Blinks

Based on Point Bug Algorithm

In this work, we propose a new approach alongside the typical method, to control the motorized wheelchair using EOG signals. The new approach grants the user to look around without restraint, while the wheelchair navigates automatically to the desired goal point. Only EOG signals are used to control the wheelchair; eye gazing and blinking. The user can still appoint to control the wheelchair using the typical manual method in case the surroundings and obstacle structures do not assist with the new developed auto navigation method. In the new auto navigation approach the microcontroller can attain the goal point direction and distance by calculating the gaze angle of the user. Bug2 algorithm is utilized to navigate the wheelchair in the auto controlling method. Experimental tests show slightly different results than theory, because the bug algorithms cannot continuously update the robot's position data in experiments

ATEMC83 A real time traffic light control scheme for reducing vehicles

CO2 emissions

Global warming is a very serious problem which is becoming ever worse as the growth in the number of vehicles. This paper presents a real time traffic lights control scheme for reducing vehicles CO2 emissions based on the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) installed vehicles. Real time road conditions are obtained by wireless communication between the vehicles and the traffic lights based on the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology. A decision tree classification algorithm is used to calculate optimal average waiting time, then to calculate the CO2 reductions. Compared with fixed-time control, simulation results indicate that more than 26.9% idling time CO2 emissions can be reduced when traffic flow is heavy, meanwhile vehicles have a 0.07 higher probability to pass the intersection by non-stop when traffic flow is light
