Harmful effects of co-education-IIIFayyaz Ahmad Zaroo
The success of Single-sex EducationPractical Evidence
Apart from Muslim countries-where education
is still mostly a single-sex classroom-based system
(same curricula but separate classrooms) and after
experiencing the delirious effects of coeducation,
many countries in the West have recently started
experimenting with the single-sex education system.
An overwhelming majority of the people affected by
this change indicated that seeing and experiencing
the changes brought by applying single-sex
education system in their schools helped them truly
appreciate the idea and understand it better.
Benjamin Wright, Principal of the Thurgood Marshall
Elementary School in Seattle, Washington, turned his
previously co-ed school into one with separate-sex
classroom. Mr. Wright stated that previously in
coeducation, most of the teachers time was wasted
in resolving issues arising from boys teasing the girls
and vice versa. However, now in separate-sex
environment, they are in fact teaching knowledge to

the children. Mr. Wright also noted that in the state-
level exams which are held in Washington in 2002
(The Washington Assessment of Student Learning),
their school boys who were previously being taught
under the coeducation system and were scoring 10%,
increased their scores to 73%, courtesy of single-sex
education, an outstanding success indeed.
Testimonials fromAround the World
JamaicaSingle-sex education is quite common in the
Caribbean country, Jamaica. In a large study ofJamaican schools published in the 1985 issue of the
international Journal of Science Education, it was
shown that girls at single-sex high school performed
much better in mathematics and science as
compared to those girls who were studying at co-edhigh schools. The study concluded that the effects of
sex stereotyping are more sharply apparent in the co-
educational setting, for here there appears to be a
stronger need to differentiate between the sexes.
Thus, even if subjects such as mathematics andsciences are technically available to girls in this type
of school [mixed gender school], they are more likely
than their single-sex institutional counterparts to get
the message that such subjects are unfeminine and

beyond their grasp intellectually. Another very
interesting study which confirms this contention is
conducted in Britain by Lawrie and Brown who
surveyed 284 students of the age group 14-15.The
study finding, which were published in the 1992 issue
of the British Journal of Educational Psychology,
arrived at similar results as the above-mentioned
research. Lawrie and Brown found that students at
all-girls schools reported enjoying math more, and
found math less difficult, as compared to the girls who
attended co-ed schools. Girls at the all-girls schools
were more than twice as likely to say that they
planned to take advanced math, compared to girls at
co-ed schools.
CanadaAnother shining example of the success of
single-sex education comes from the inner-city
James Lyng High School in Montreal, Canada that
was a coeducational institution in the past. Five years
ago, single-sex classrooms were introduced in the
school and since then, students absenteeism has
declined, pass scores are higher and the number of
students going on from this school to college has
nearly doubled. All this is due to the blessing of
single-sex education.

Our next testimony from Canada is taken from a
report published by the Montreal Gazette, the most
widely circulated newspaper in Montreal, Canada, in
its October 1999 issue titled: Lets separate Boys,
Girls in Classes. This article reports on research
conducted by the Superior Educational Council of
Quebec and its final recommendation to the
Canadian government advising it to end coeducation
in its public schools and have them adopt the old
system of the 1940s when schools separated males
from females and even had separate entrances for
boys and girls to the school buildings. The head of
this educational council Celine Saint-Pierre (a female)
was quoted as saying: There is plenty of evidence
that boys and girls learn differently. Celine further
added that education should be separate-gender
based, otherwise boys and girls will keep on getting
weaker in their studying and the Quebec society will
have to suffer its better consequences in the future.
In addition, the article reported the council as being
very concerned about the state of education in the
province; quoting their statement that Quebec is
headed for a social crisis, a situation where males
wont be able to get jobs in a knowledge-based
economy.

In July 2003, a conference of educational
experts was held in Sydney, Australia, where several
speakers presented evidence that the boys who are
educated in single-sex schools may do far better in
terms of maturity and social adjustment than boys
who attend coeducation schools. Dr. Bruce Cook,
principal of the Southport School on the Gold Coast,
told the audience of his experiences and
observations that boys educated in single-sex
schools prove to be better husbands in the future
because, due to absence of girls around them in
schools and colleges, they do not have to adopt a
masculine attitude. Hence, boys in single-sex
schools become more sensitive men.
Personal TestimonialsWe conclude this telling reportage of the news
the development and growth of the single-sex
educational systems is making by the following
personal testifications to the benefits of single-sex
education.
The first anecdote and good example is found
in the personal experience of a known contemporary
Western historian, Steven Miles. Dr. Miles put in plain
words, in an interview, how attending a single-sex
high school was a turning point in his life, He believes
his attendance of a separate-gender school to be the

main reason his abilities flourished and, eventually,
he did his PhD in history. He said: I began high
school more shy than most adolescents. But I did
take the enormous step of joining the speech team,
and that opened a new world to me. It led me to other
activities I strongly believe that they made possible
the development of interests and skills that led me to
undertake PhD in history. When I think back on the
catalyst-joining the speech team-and I consider the
fact that forensics in Illinois is dominated by girls,
about 70/30, I cannot imagine that I would have
joined the team in a co-ed school I needed the
chance to explore my own potential without worrying
about looking foolish in front of the girls.
In a recent Newsweek article (October 24,
2005) titled, With No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to
Learn. Christine Flowers wrote of her experiences as
an undergraduate student at Bryn Mawr College
(Which follows separate-sex education at
undergraduate level). She was exceedingly happy to
get admission at Bryn Mawr, especially because it
gave her the opportunity to extend her 12 years of
single-sex education into 16. According to Flowers,
its far too distracting to have a member of the
opposite sex sitting in class beside you. She went
on, describing her female college mates:

At Bryn Mawr, the women I encountered were
brilliant, independent and focused. Not all of them
arrived that way, as this writer can confirm, but all of
them exited confident of success in whichever fields
they chose to enter. Studying at a separate-gender
educational institution encouraged Christine Flowers to
concentrate on her studies as she points out: I
immersed myself in French and Italian, history and
philosophy, fencing and swimming. I never once worried
about whether I was going to have a date on Friday
night (I never once did), nor did I hesitate to contribute a
comment in class because I felt intimidated by the
attractive young man to my left Bryn Mawr [college]helped me to understand that excellence has no gender
preference. Flowers further clarifies that females are not
the only ones who benefit from single-sex education.
Educating the two genders in separate classes is
beneficial for boys as well, and Christine Flowers
experience as a school teacher stands testimony to this
fact as she writes: I used to teach at a boys school in
suburban Philadelphia, and while Im certain that my
teenage scholars werent completely unaware of female
charms, they did seem to focus admirably on their
school-work between the hours concentrating on
developing their minds and not their social skills should

SURAH AL-BAQARAHNote: This part of Tafseer is the remaining portion of Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer and hence connected with the previous chapter ofSurah Al-Baqarah Tafseer.
Salah with Jamaah : (Congregation)
The command, :Be steadfast in Salah, shows that Salah is obligatory. The other command, : Bow down with those who bow (in
worship), establishes that Salah is to be offered in
the company of other Muslim. (Jamaah)
A very important question arises here what isthe degree of the obligation intended in this injuction?
There is a difference of views among the Fuqaha
(jurists) on this point. According to a large body of
blessed Companions, their successors and of the

11
jurists of the ummah, it is necessary (wajib) to offer
Salah in a congregation, and it is a sin to give up the
Jamaah. Some of the blessed Companions have
gone to the length of holding that it is not permissible
to offer Salah all by oneself without a proper excuse
allowed by the Shariah. Verse 43, in its literal
connotation, provides an argument in favour of this
view. Moreover, certain Hadeeth narrations too seemto suggest that the Jamaah is necessary (wajib). For
example, a Hadeeth reported by Abu Dawud says
that for a man living near a mosque Salah is
permissible only in the mosque.
According to another Hadeeth reported from
the blessed Companion Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu
Anhu) by Imam Muslim, a Companion who was blind
asked Hadhat Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi
Wasallam) for the permission to offer Salah in his
house, for there was no one to take him to the
mosque and to bring him back. Hadhat Rasullullah
(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) allowed him to do so,
but, as he was leaving, asked him if he could hear the
call for the prayers in his house. He said that he
could. Hadhat Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi
Wasallam) remarked: In that case, you must come tothe mosque. Another narration of the same Hadeeth
as reported by Abu Dawud adds that Hadhrt
Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: Then,
I see no room for making a concession in your case.

12
Similarly, al-Qurtubi cites a Hadeeth from the blessed
Companion Ibn Abas (Radiyallahu Anhu) who reports
that Hadha Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)
once said: : The manwho hears the call for the prayers but does not go to
the mosque for the Jamaah, has not offered his
prayers at all, except that he should have some valid
excuse. One the basis of such a Hadeeth,
Companions like Abdullah Ibn Masud and Abu Musa
al-Ashari (Radiyallahu Anhum) have ruled that if a
man lives close enough to a mosque to hear the call
for prayers and yet does not attend the Jamaah
without a valid excuse, his offering of the Salah at
home is not acceptable. (Let us explain that hearing
the call refers to the call made by a man possessing
an average voice, and not to that made by a man with
an extraordinarily loud voice or broadcast by a
loudspeaker). Presented this far were argumentsadvanced by our revered elders who consider that
Salah with Jamaah is wajib or necessary.
On the other hand, the majority of the blessed
Companions, their successors and later jurists hold
that the Jamaah is a sunnah which has beenparticularly emphasized (Muakkadan), and that
amont the Sunnah of this kind it is, like the Sunnah
offered in Fajr Salah, the most emphasized so as to
come very close to being necessary. On the basis of
8/4/2019 September 2011 - Significance Of Single-Sex Education
11/31
13
certain other verses and Hadeeth narrations, they
interpret the imperative in bow down with those who
bow as intended for emphasis only. As for the
Ahadeeth which appear to be saying that it is just not
permissible for those who live near a mosque to offer
their Salah at home, they say that these only men
that this is not the perfect way to offer the prayers.
The most comprehensive explanation of thematter has been provided by the blessed Companion
Abdullah Ibn Masud, as reported by Imam Muslim:
The man who wishes to meet Allah tomorrow (i.e.
the Day of Judgement) as a true Muslim, should offer
these (five) prayers regularly and steadfastly in a
place where the call for the prayers is habitually
made (i.e. a mosque), for Allah has laid down for your
Prophet certain ways of good guidance (Sunnan al-
Huda), and offering the five prescribed prayers with
the Jamaah is one of them. If you offer these prayers
at home, he added pointing towards a man, as he
does, keeping away from the Jamaah, you will have
forsaken the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you
forsake the Sunnah of your Prophet, you will go
astray. The man who (performs the wudu or ablution
and cleanses himself in the proper manner, and then)goes to a mosque, for every step that he takes, Allah
forgive one of his sins, adds one good deed to his
account and promotes him one rank higher. Our
company was such that there was not a singly man,

except for people known for their hypocrisy who
would offer their prayers at home away from the
Jamaah, so much so that even when a man was ill or
unable to walk, he was brought to the mosque with
his hands resting on the shoulders of two men, and
made to stand in the row of those who were praying.(To be continued, Insha Allah)

did you do so? When I did not do a certain task, he
never asked me why I did not do it. Hadhrat Rasulullah
(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) has the best character amongall people. (And also possessed the most excellent
features, so much so) that is never felt a silk cloth, nor
pure silk, nor any other thing softer than the palm of
Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Nor did is
smell any musk or any other fragrance, more sweet
smelling than the perspiration of Hadhrat Rasulullah(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam).
Commentary:
This is not an exaggeration. The perspiration of
Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was
collected and used as a fragrance. The one with whom
Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) shookhands, a fragrance emitted from that hand for a whole
day. Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) did
not utter even the word oof is due to his high and
noble character and humbleness. In another hadeeth it
has also been stated that Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu
Alayhi Wasallam) used to say: Only that small happenthat Allah wills. If it is destined to happen it shall
happen.
A pleasant incident
There is surprising incident regarding the last portion
of the hadeeth under discussion, from which we find the
complete love of the Sahaba (Radhiyallahu Anhu) for HadhratRasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). That is, Hadhrat
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) once began relating the
incident with love and happiness, That I shook the
Mubaarak hands of Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi

Wasallam) with these hands of mine. I did not feel any, silken
cloth softer than Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi
Wasallam). The student, before whom this hadeeth wasmentioned, showed his desire that he also wished to shake
the hands of that person who shook the hands of Hadhrat
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Thereafter, this chain
continued that today after more than 1,350 years it is still
continually practised. It is well known as the Hadeeth of
musafaha (hand shaking) as the hand shaking is continued.

This is borne out in the following verse:

The Hanafi School of thought and Ahaadeeth
There is not doubt, several Hadeeths which are
infact weak. The weakness of the Hadeeth is
determined by a weak narrator present in the sanad.

However, it is not necessary that every weak narrator
narrated a weak Hadeeth each time he narrated. In
the circumstance of collaborating and supporting
evidence to the circumstance of collaborating and
supporting evidence to strengthen a weak Hadeeth, it
will be accepted and applied. For example, if there is
a weak narration in a book of Hadeeth upon which
the Companions and their Successors have acted,
then this practice demonstrates that the weak
narrator has indeed narrated correctly. This is why
the Hadeeth There is no will for the heirs (who have
pre-assigned shares in inheritance) have been
accepted by all the Mujtahids even thought the
Hadeeth is regarded weak in its narration. In fact, thisprocess can give preference to a weak Hadeeth over
a strong one. For example, the Prophets daughter,
Zainab was married to Abul Aas who did not accept
Islam immediately, but did so later on. The question
amongst scholars is that did the Prophet renewhis marriage contract, or did he allow hem to live as
husband and wife without doing to. The narration
from Abdullah Ibn Omar says that the contract was
renewed with a new mahr, while the narrator from
Abdullah Ibn Abbas says otherwise. The narration
from Ibn Omar is weak whereas the one from Ibn
Abbas says one from Ibn Abbas is sound. Imam
Tirmidhi, who was a master of Hadeeth, gave legal
preference to the weak Hadeeth over the sound one
because of the practice of the Companions.148

The objection against the Hanafi point of view
is seldom due to scholarly study rather due to a lack
of understanding and in certain instances even a
want of attempting to understand the Hanafi point of
view. Certain scholars have fallen into this
indifference. For instance, Maulana Salfi has
criticized Iman Abu Hanifas stand on the issue of

The ulamaa have concluded that
homosexuality is like adultery. However, their
opinions differ where punishment is concerned.
Some conclude that a homosexual is liable to the
same punishment as meted out to an adulterous
person, stoning to death for a married person and a
hundred lashes for an unmarried homosexual. Imam
Shafee may Allah have mercy on him, concurs withthis ruling. Others hold that a homosexual must be
stoned to death whether he is married or unmarried.
Imam Maalik and Imam Ahmad, May Allah have

ruling, Imam Shafee holds that the active and
passive homosexual partners be punished withdeath4. The Hanafii Madh-hab leaves the punishment
to the discretion of the ruler, who may, if he deems it
fit, have the habitual culprit beheaded. The same
conclusion is arrived at in the Hadeeth5._____________________4 At-Targhib Wat-Tarheeb5 Tirmidhii, Abu Daawud, Ibn Maajah, Bayha-qii

soulDear Editor,
I am one of the subscribers of your esteemed
monthly, An-Noor, and I read its every new issue in a
single sitting as its every feature and article contains
nutritious food for my mind and soul. Then I read the
same issue off and on until the issue of next month
reaches me. What I enjoy about a journal likeAn-Noor
is the variety it offers, plus it publishes editorials that I
do not see in other journals of the country.
If it is convenient, add one more column of
question/answer to the columns ofAn-Noor.

Notwithstanding the suspension of academicactivities, the Campus of Darul Uloom
Raheemiyyah Bandipora remained abuzz with
many kinds of worships throughout the Holy month
of Ramadhan year 1432 AH. A big number of
Muslims, who spent less than a month atRaheemiyyah this year, engaged themselves in
reciting the Holy Quran (Tilaawat), Zikr,
Tasbeehaat, Durood-Sharief, Istigfar and Nawaafil.
However, Raheemiyyah witnessed a large number
of such worshippers in the last ten days of
Ramadhan-Mubarak who performed the worship of
Itikaaf in the grand Masjid of Raheemiyyah and
returned their homes after performing Eid-Salaah.
The esteemed rector of Raheemiyyah varsity,
Hadhrat Maulana Muhammad Rahmatullah Sahib
Daamat Barakatuhum, delivered spiritual discourses
on self-reformation (Tazkiyah) before the
worshippers in the Masjid-Shareef of Raheemiyyah.
