Greetings unto the People of Settmour Swamp from Alexander and Rhiannon

We hope everyone who went to Pennsic had a good time, made it home safely and has recuperated from the heat and dried out from the wet. Congratulations to Lady Cassandra de Matisse, who received her AoA, Don Sebastian Estevan de Xavier for being inducted into the Order of the Golden Rapier and to Master Phillip Reed who was elevated to the Order of the Pelican at East Kingdom court. Also vivats to those who were recognized for their efforts at our baronial court: Cordelia, Richenda and Guy - Bronze towers; Mercedes - Iron tower; (keep up the good work!) and Leofric - Bloody tower (thanks, but don't do it again!). Now that summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner, there are many events, demos, workshops and practices to keep us busy. Sofia and Gudrun are organizing the Victorian Days demo in Belvidere on Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9. We have participated in this one several times and it is always a lot of fun. Also try to make room in your schedules for a Boy Scout demo on September 18th at 7:00PM in Woodbridge. I know it's a school/work night but if those of you who live in the area could do this one for Sofia (it's her son's troop) it would be greatly appreciated. Weather permitting we will be traveling to the Barony of Carillion for their annual Lakewood Renaissance Faire, September 15th and 16th for at least one day. If there is a Hurley game scheduled that would be the day. Alexander will be attending the Coronation of Andreas and Gabriella hosted by Barony of Bhakail in New Castle, DE on September 29, and Rhiannon will be spending that weekend at the Celtic Classic demo in our neighboring Shire of Eisental. Please join either of us if you can. Our next baronial event will be held on October 27 in Flemington. Jehannine is in charge of a Textile Schola and is still looking to fill in the schedule of classes and volunteers. Please contact her to help out. Rhiannon is really looking forward to this one (Textiles? No, really?) and will even be teaching a class. Check the calendar in this issue for the times and dates of upcoming practices and workshops. Some of these were suspended for the month of August and are starting up again very soon. There may even be some new surprises coming. Several of your fellow Swampies have been looking into additional sites and activities for the future. Suggestions are always welcome. What would you like to do? See you soon, YIS

Focus on the ArtsFocus on the ArtsFocus on the ArtsFocus on the Arts

Over the next few months The Mudpuppy will feature a series of interviews with artisans living within the Barony. It is the goal of the Baron and Baroness and my office to foster and promote Arts and Sciences in every way we can. What better way than to talk with our artisans. This month I interviewed Wilhelm van Utrecht, Illuminator and Chef. If you have questions or comments about the Artisan of the Month, series please feel free to contact me via email. If you would like to submit a name for a future interviewee you may email that to me as well. YIS Elizabeth Elenore Lovell

A&S Minister

E: How long have you been in the SCA? W: My first event was Irik and Merlinia's wedding feast. This was at the Schooley's Mt. Firehall and Baroness Ursula brought me along. This was December 1, 1984 so I guess about 23 years or so. E: Have you always lived in the Barony of Settmour Swamp or have you played with different groups during your SCA life? W: The Barony of Settmour Swamp is my family in the SCA. Even though at times I have played more of a significant roll in households, than in the Barony in general. The households I have been part of or have worked with are ICOD and Duke Timothy's group, House Arindale, in Annandale. I have also hung out with the Horde. However, I have far more friends in the barony and the largest concentration of my SCAdian friends are in Bethir. Currently my wife Deanna and daughter Carmella and I live in the Barony of Carillion. We attend the Lakewood Renaissance Faire which is five minutes from our home. Years ago when Baron Pug was in office there was a lot more traffic between our two groups. I haven’t really reached out to them yet. I will in the future, but as a feastocrat, scribe and husband, you don't want to burn the candle at both ends. E: Do you have a persona? If so, please tell us about it. W: His name is Wilhelm van Utrecht. He’s a modest fellow who comes from the lowlands of Germania, which we now call the Netherlands. Wilhelm likes to travel from monastery to church to priory searching through fine vellums and scrolls. This is where he started to learn the art of calligraphy and illumination from the monks. He doesn't stay long in one place as Wilhelm has a love of good food and the monks eat awful stuff on the best of days, let alone fast days. Besides the fact, that if the monks learned he was a pagan, the game would be afoot. Wilhelm is always up for feasting and merry making.

E: Do you have any Baronial or Kingdom level awards? If so, what are they? W: As for Baronial award, I am honored to have been given both Bronze and Ivory Towers. At the most recent Kings and Queens Archery championship held in the barony, I was honored to receive my Award of Arms. E: Are you an apprentice, protégé, or squire? If yes, with whom are you affiliated? W: Currently, I am not. E: Which arts and sciences do you practice? W: I have time for calligraphy and illumination in scribal arts for our barony and am an East Kingdom scribe. I also enjoy cooking period food and planning feasts. E: Where did you learn your skill and who did you learn from? W: As far as scribal talents, I am self taught. However, Baroness Paigan was helpful in directing me where to purchase certain scribal items I couldn’t find on my own. She was also a wonderful source for reference materials. As far as period cooking, I started helping in SCAdian kitchens 23 years ago under Argyle and Baron Irik. Years later I worked with good feastocrats such as Trixie before striking out on my own. Once again, Baroness Paigan was very helpful once I really started to plan and prepare feasts. E: Are there any areas of arts and sciences that you would like to learn about or any skills you would like to practice that you don’t already? W: There are a lot of arts and sciences I would love to work on. I would love to learn how to prepare vellum from skins. Also Arab boy (Master Ali) has always amazed me with his glass blowing if I had the time. E: What project(s) have you completed that you are most proud of? W: I think as a scribe and chef, I am always happy when people like your work. The best time for me personally as a scribe is when your scroll is presented in court and hopefully there are oohs and ahhs. As a chef, knowing the populace ate a great balanced feast that came in on or under budget is fantastic. Hearing how much people enjoyed a feast months later is the icing on the cake. E: What are you working on now? W: I just finished two Kingdom AOAs prior to Pennsic, one for the backlog scroll signet office and one that Baron Alexander delivered for me to Pennsic for EK Court at Pennsic. I also completed four scrolls for our barony for Pennsic: two Bronze Towers, one Iron Tower and one Bloody Tower. I am currently working on a commission for St. Paul’s Church (their motto). I’m always working on baronial scrolls, but I can't talk about them. I usually turn out one or two Kingdom scrolls per month. I’ve recently been asked to do the dayboard for the Black Griffin Inn.

Page 6: September 2007 Mudpuppy - East Kingdom, Society for ...

E: What projects do you have planned for the coming year? W: I have an on-going project where I am converting past feastocrats recipes and menus into a volume for beginner feastocrats and chefs. E: Of the A&S skills you possess, which do you think you would be able to teach to others? W: Both feastocrating and scribal arts. E: Are you willing to share your knowledge with the populous? How can you be contacted should someone be interested in leaning from you?

W: As far as scribal arts, September will bring the return of the scribal workshops at St. Paul’s I head. We welcome you all. I can always be contacted via email or through the baronial officers. As far as period cooking, feast planning and such, I’m not doing anything large this year. If anyone is interested in learning more or needs help, please email me. Maybe we will have another cooking Schola or University soon.. An example of Wilhelm’s scribal talent is shown below. It is a scroll for a Bronze Tower.
