The ASTRI Prototype
The foreseen ASTRI Prototype performance has been summarized in ASTRI-MC-IFSITO-5000-1 internal document by Vallania & Di Pierro.
Maximum sensitivity : 2 - 5 TeV (1 Crab @ 5 in 7.5h)
In the range 10 - 20 TeV : (1 Crab @ 5 in 20h)
First Crab observations with a Schwarschild-Couder-SiPM Cherenkov telescope.
Possible sources (from Sicily): Crab, MKN 421, MKN 501, ...

Some preliminary statements
From ASTRI-MC-IFSITO-5000-1 (Vallania & Di Pierro):
• Energy range 0.5 - 10 TeV ➔ analysis of the Hillas parameters and rough estimate of the spectra of a few bright sources.
• Energy range > 10 TeV ➔ detection of the VHE excess from a few bright sources.

Some preliminary comments
One of the main question is:
when the prototype will start acquiring astrophysical data ?
The structure (w/o mirrors and camera) should be ready in October 2013
Is it realistic to plan the first-light observation at the end of Spring 2014 ?

Some preliminary comments
Applicable to the SST Prototype only.
• Do we need a scheduling of the observations ➔ YES
• Do we need a fast repointing mode for GRBs alert ➔ NO
• Do we need a re-scheduling of the observations (within a few hours) in case of a “flaring Crab” event-like ➔ YES
• Do we need a science simulator for our data ➔ YES

A preliminary summary
Applicable to the SST Prototype only.
• The number of sources that can be observed and detected by the ASTRI Prototype is extremely limited.
• Most of the time will be spent for calibrations (both HW and SW).
• Expected time-life (before the mini-array advent) about 1.5 yr.
• Science IS feasible, although it’s difficult it will lead to new discoveries.
• Next steps (part I):• investigate the time domain.• investigate synergies with other observatories (cross-calibration with
MAGIC, multi-wavelengths observations, ...).

A preliminary summary
Next steps (part II):Define I/F between different “items” (SW/SW, HW/HW, HW/SW).Some packages already defined, this could be a good starting point. Some tools already in hands, let’s share them.
