Je sais qu’il est arrivé.

Je sais faire ça.

Je connais Sophie.

Je connais bien Paris. Je connais cette pièce (de théâtre).

Savoir - doesn’t need a Direct Object

- is always used when followed by QUE

- is used when followed by a clause

Connaître - must have a Direct Object

- cannot be followed by QUE or a clause

Je sais.

Je sais qu’il viendra.

Je sais à quelle heure elle arrive.

Je la connais.

- cannot be followed by an infinitive

- is used when followed by an infinitiveJe sais (comment) faire ça.

Je sais qui est le maire de cette ville.

Je connais le maire de cette ville.

Je ne sais pas quand il part.

= I know this fact.

= I have met this person.

= To know followed by a clause. Je connais l’heure d’arrivée de son vol.

= I am acquainted with this fact / no clause.

Je ne sais pas leur adresse.= I don’t know their address by heart.

Je ne connais pas leur adresse.= I have no idea where they live.

I know the arrival time of his/her flight.
