6 ALEXANDER COUNTRY TURNOUT Outdoor International Ring 2 Judge: Rachel Bown Singles, pairs & tandems. Driven to either a Country Cart, Dog Cart, Governess Cart, Ralli Cart etc. suitably turned out for the country.

CLASS 7: RIDE & DRIVE To be judged in the following manner. The driver need not be the same competitor as the rider,

but the horse/pony must remain the same in both sections.

Ridden Section:

Competitors will be asked to walk, trot and canter on one rein, then change the rein and canter only on the other rein. They will then be asked to give an individual show which will include cantering on both reins, extended canter and rein back. Conformation will be included in the judging but riders will not dismount for the stand show. The judge is looking for a horse/pony that is going quietly with good impulsion in the correct pace and in a balanced manner on the bit.

The judge will place every horse/pony in the class and award points as follows:- 1st – 1 point, 2nd – 2 points, 3rd – 3 points etc.

Driven Section:

Competitors will be judged as for a Private Driving class. The judge will place every horse/pony in the class and award points as follows:- 1st – 1 point, 2nd – 2 points, 3rd – 3 points etc.

Points will be added together and the winner will be the competitor with the lowest combined total. In the event of equality of points the highest placed competitor in the driven section will win.

7 RIDE & DRIVE Outdoor International Ring 1 Judge: Michelle Peters Open to traditional/traditional-type vehicles or an exercise vehicle fitted with traditional-type wheels.

CLASSES 10–12 : CARRIAGEHOUSE INSURANCE CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE

The essence of the class is the word ‘elegance’ and the winner will be the turnout which, in the opinion of the Judge, presents the most elegant effect. To include vehicle, horse, driver, passenger etc. but above all the general impression. Attention may be paid to drivers’/passengers’ personal attire but fancy dress or period costume is definitely barred. The whole object of the class is to establish which turnout presents the most pleasing picture and normal judging criteria does not apply. It is judged from a distance and vehicles are NOT closely inspected. To be driven at park pace. NO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 10 YEARS MAY RIDE AS PASSENGERS. Young Drivers – attention is drawn to Rule 6.2 on page 24.

10 CARRIAGEHOUSE INSURANCE CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE – TRADITIONAL VEHICLES Outdoor International Ring 1 Judge: Fiona Gordon-Clarke Open to singles, pairs or tandems driven to a traditional or traditional-type vehicle. The first four will qualify for Class 12 – Carriagehouse Insurance Concours d'Elegance Championship. In the event that less than four competitors qualify from either Class 10 or 11, additional competitors will qualify from each class, priority being given to Class 10.

11 CARRIAGEHOUSE INSURANCE CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE – EXERCISE VEHICLES Outdoor International Ring 1 Judge: Fiona Gordon-Clarke Open to singles, pairs or tandems driven to a exercise vehicle fitted with traditional-type wheels. The first four will qualify for Class 12 – Carriagehouse Insurance Concours d'Elegance Championship. In the event that less than four competitors qualify from either Class 10 or 11, additional competitors will qualify from each class, priority being given to Class 10.

12 CARRIAGEHOUSE INSURANCE CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE CHAMPIONSHIP Indoor International Arena Judge: Fiona Gordon-Clarke Open to eight qualified competitors. In the event that less than four competitors qualify from either Class 10 or 11, additional competitors will qualify from each class, priority being given to Class 10. The winner to receive a trophy87.

13 KBIS BRITISH EQUESTRIAN INSURANCE VINTAGE VEHICLES Indoor International Arena Judge: Vanessa Neal Open to ponies, horses & donkeys. Singles, pairs, tandems & multiples (max. 5 horses). To be shown with a genuine old preserved or restored vehicle. The emphasis of this class is on the vehicle.

14 SARAH OWLETT DONKEYS & MULES Indoor International Arena Judge: Michelle Peters Open to donkeys & mules in traditional/traditional-type vehicles or an exercise vehicle fitted with traditional-type wheels. Donkey Breed Society rosettes to a member of the DBS driving a donkey for:- – the highest placed traditional vehicle – the highest placed exercise vehicle, – the highest placed Young Driver under 16 years old – the highest placed donkey never to have won a driving class up to and including 31st August. The winner to receive the DBS 40th Anniversary Trophy74

15 LADY & GENTLEMAN WHIP Outdoor International Ring 2 Judge: Michelle Peters This class is judged to determine the capabilities of the driver and particular attention will be paid to dress, turnout and driving procedure. Open to traditional/traditional-type vehicles or an exercise vehicle fitted with traditional-type wheels. The winner to receive the Vivien Ellis91 Trophy.

16 PLEASURE DRIVING Pleasure Driving classes are for newcomers to showing and not intended for those who show in private driving classes. Regular showing competitors are asked to respect this.

To be judged on general cleanliness, safety of turnout, correct fitting of harness and vehicle suitability. To be judged: 15% vehicle suitability, fit and cleanliness; 15% harness suitability, fit and cleanliness; 70% driver & groom, horse/pony, way of going and suitability as a family pleasure animal. Competitors may, for example be required to drive and halt between two pairs of cones and/or given other specific movements to execute in their show.

Open to horses, ponies, donkeys & mules. A single or pair driven to a vehicle capable of seating 2 or more persons. Open to traditional/traditional-type vehicles or an exercise vehicle and for the purposes of this class they will be judged on equal merit. Pneumatic tyres specifically designed for carriages (i.e. not car tyres) are allowed. Lamps need not be carried.

All horses/ponies must be registered in the studbook of the UK Hackney Horse Society or of a registered Hackney Society Abroad, and all exhibitors, drivers & grooms must be members of the Hackney Horse Society. A Novice is a horse/pony which has not won the Novice Championship at the Annual National Breed Show or the Novice of the Year and/or has not completed more than three competitive showing seasons.

Each judge will award each competitor scores out of 10 which will NOT be displayed at the end of each competitor’s show. Scores will be announced at the completion of the class and the competitor with the highest score will win. In the event of equality of marks the judges will determine the winner. CLASS 45 – BDS TREC BDS Trec is a three-phase competition designed for the enjoyment of participants open to any

member of the BDS. It is specifically designed for those competitors who may not be interested in showing, but want to enjoy a relaxed but competitive atmosphere with their turnouts.

45 BDS TREC Outdoor International Ring 3 & International Indoor Arena Judges: Colin Hurd, Lesley Hurd Open to single turnouts, horses, ponies or donkeys. Open to traditional, traditional-type or exercise vehicles which will all be judged on equal merit. Pneumatic tyres specifically designed for carriages (i.e. not car tyres) are allowed. Lamps need not be carried.

The winner will be the competitor with the highest points total over the three phases. In the event of equality of points for the winner, the highest placed competitor in the final skill will win.

All competitors will receive a pair of rosettes so that the driver and groom both get one.

Prior to the commencement of the Class there will be a briefing of all competitors. The time and place will be posted to competitors approximately two weeks before the show.

PHASE 1 – PRESENTATION Each competitor will be called forward in a drawn order to the arena where the turnout will be thoroughly inspected for the following:- harness fitting, vehicle suitability, proper spares, safety items (clothing etc.) general appearance and suitability for the event.

Marks will be awarded out of 10

PHASE 2 – THE DRIVE After Phase 1, competitors will leave at approx 5 minute intervals for the drive. The distance is approx 3 miles and should be completed at a steady trot to achieve the optimum time for the distance.

The competitor completing the drive closest to the optimum time is awarded the same number of points as the number of competitors starting (e.g. 11 competitors – 11 points) with points to lower placings reducing by 1 per competitor.

PHASE 3 – THE SKILLS The skills tests will take place after the drive. (There may be a delay before Phase 3 starts). Each skill is designed to test both driver and groom, as well as the horse. Teamwork is key as well as having a bit of fun. The skills list will be provided to competitors at the pre-class briefing.

When called forward each competitor starts at number 1, and enter at A. Each skill area will be clearly marked.

Each skill is marked out of 10. The final skill and presentation of awards will take place in the International Indoor Arena.

For drivers who have never competed in BDS Trec before, examples of skills include:- (Note: These are examples only and may not feature in Class 45).

Random Route – Within the coned area negotiate a path through avoiding the markers where possible. Egg Hunt – Your groom to find the 'eggs' that add up to this number . The Water Hazard – Firstly your groom to dismount and then FULLY fill both the beakers and pass ONE to the whip, drive the marked course at trot and return both the FULL beakers to the table to be measured.

GENERAL INFORMATION including ENTRY FEES

1) ENTRIESa) Closing Date of Entries: Entries must be received by the Show Organiser not later than

Friday 31st August. No telephone, email or fax entries unless by prior agreement with the Show Organiser. Post dated cheques will not be accepted.

b) Classes 25–40 Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Championships – Competitors who qualify after the closing date should notify the organiser of their intention to enter within 48 hours of qualifying, and send the completed entry form to arrive not later than 96 hours after qualifying.

c) Fees: Classes 1–43 £28 per class, Class 45 £10. In addition there will be a compulsory contribution towards first aid of £3 per completed entry form. There is no entry fee for Classes 12, 19, 24, 34, 38, 41 & 44.

d) Payment by credit or debit card is accepted. Please complete the form which is included in the schedule.

2) ARENASa) The indoor arena is approximately 72m x 35m and there are three outside all-weather

surface arenas which will also be utilised. Asthmatics are advised that horses are the predominant feature of this event.

3) STABLING & POWERa) Stabling must be reserved and paid for directly with the management of Addington Manor

Equestrian Centre using the form on page 15. b) Competitors may bring their own bedding providing it is not straw.c) Electric hook-up must be reserved on the stabling form; the number of hook-ups is limited.d) Stable bookings run from 5pm–5pm – Horses may not arrive after 10.00 pm.

4) PASSESa) Passes are not required for competitors.b) Seating is on an unreserved basis with access to some areas of the show subject to capacity.

5) SHOWERS/CATERINGa) There are permanent showers, canteen and licensed bar on the showground.

6) DOGSa) All animals must be under proper control at all times within the Showground. Dogs will only

be permitted in the car and lorry parks and must be kept on leads. Loose dogs are liable to be impounded. Dogs are not allowed in the competition or public areas, main building, cafeteria or stable barn.

7) INFORMATION & TIMETABLEa) Information, numbers & passes will be posted approximately two weeks prior to the show,

together with other show information including the timetable etc. b) Subject to the number of entries received, the show may run earlier than advertised.

8) CLASH OF CLASSESa) The Show Committee cannot be held responsible for classes clashing and if this is the case,

competitors must make their own decision regarding the class or championship in which they wish to compete. Classes will not be held up and Show Rule 5 should be particularly noted.

THE BRITISH DRIVING SOCIETY LTD.SHOW RULES1. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY So far as permitted by law the Show Organiser, the Society, its officers, employees and representatives will not be

liable to any person whosoever whilst upon, entering, or leaving the Showground for any loss, damage, death injury or accident to persons or property or for lost or stolen items.

2. INDEMNITY Each Exhibitor must keep the Society, its officers, employees and representatives fully indemnified against all

losses, actions, costs, claims, demands and expenses arising directly or indirectly out of any act, omission or negligence by him or by anyone attending the Show in connection with his entry or otherwise expressed or implied with his authority. Therefore all Exhibitors, Competitors and Owners are strongly advised to take out third-party liability insurance. The Society cannot advise on policies or their suitability and it is the individual’s responsibility to obtain advice wherever necessary.

3. SAFETY3.1 Exhibitors, Owners and Competitors are personally responsible for ensuring that they take all necessary measures

with regard to health and safety. 3.2 Exhibitors, Owners and Competitors are personally responsible for maintaining control over their horse/s and or

pony/ies at all times whilst on the showground, including the horse box park.3.3 All dogs must be kept on leads and loose dogs are liable to be impounded. Dogs are not allowed in the competitor

or public areas, main building, cafeteria or stable barn.3.4 It is recommended that all horseboxes and trailers are fitted with a fire extinguisher of not less than 1 kilo capacity.4. ENTRIES4.1 All horses/ponies entered for the Show must be the bona fide property of a Member of the British Driving Society

(BDS) and driven by a Member (BDS) provided that entries may be made by corporate bodies where the driver is a Member.

4.2 No Member whose subscription to the Society is unpaid will be allowed to exhibit or compete, not withstanding acceptance of any entry fee.

4.3 The Society will not be liable for any error which may appear in any programme or for any entry made in the wrong class.

4.4 All entries must be made on an official entry form and are to be sent with the appropriate fees to arrive with the Show Organiser on or before the closing date for entries. Competitors who qualify for the show after the closing date of entries must notify the Show Organiser of their intention to enter within 48 hours of qualifying, the completed entry form to arrive with the Show Organiser not later than 96 hours after qualifying.

4.5 Exhibitors who cancel their entries will only be refunded their entry fees on production of a valid veterinary certificate certifying the entered horse/pony is unable to compete on the day of the Show.

4.6 No substitution or transfer of any entry will be allowed after the closing date for entries. In all cases horses entered must be named on the entry form and no entry with a general nomination will be accepted.

4.7 The Society reserves the right to reject or cancel any entry entirely at its discretion and without prior notice or the need to give any reason for doing so.

4.8 An Exhibitor making an entry shall be deemed to accept and abide by these Show Rules.5. ORGANISATION AND JUDGING5.1 The Society reserves the right to appoint such Judges as the Society in its absolute discretion may decide and to

change any Judges without prior notice. In 10-12, 17-24, 45 the Society reserves the right to appoint a judge from outside the BDS Judges panel.

5.2 The Society reserves the right to amend the timing or location of a class.5.3 The Society reserves the right to cancel any class or classes, refunding any fees paid in respect thereof.5.4 Judges’ decisions shall be final and Judges shall not be obliged to explain their decisions or actions nor enter into

correspondence regarding them.5.5 Owners will permit random drug/dope tests to be taken from horses/ponies on request by the Society.5.6 Turnouts which, in the opinion of a Judge, ring steward or other official of the Society, represent a safety risk, or

potential hazard must leave the showring immediately upon request.5.7 Any competitor whose conduct is, in the opinion of a Judge, inappropriate must leave the showring immediately

upon request. 5.8 If a turnout is not present in the showring when required, it will be subject to disqualification at the discretion of

the Judge5.9 Classifications are as follows:

♦ a novice horse/pony means an animal which has not won a First Prize or a First Prize Rosette, in harness, prior to 1st January in the year of the Show.

♦ a Novice Whip means a person who has not won a First Prize or a First Prize Rosette, in any event/show affiliated to either the Society, the Hackney Horse Society or British Carriagedriving prior to 1st January in the year of the Show.

♦ a Traditional Vehicle means a vehicle of traditional profile and identifiable type to resemble the design of a carriage built prior to the First World War. The vehicle may be made from modern materials but must have traditional style springing and carriage lamps.

6. EXHIBITORS AND EXHIBITS6.1 No horse, pony, donkey or mule under the age of four years may be entered.6.2 The driver must be aged 10 years or over on the first day of the show at which they are to compete. A driver under

the age of 18 must be accompanied in the vehicle by a competent and responsible person aged 18 years or over, a “responsible adult”. Proof of age will be required if necessary. It is the responsibility of the owner/driver (if over 18) or (if the owner/driver is under 18) the responsible adult to ensure that his/her groom/s is/are competent for the purpose of attending to the turnout and aged 10 or over on the day of the show. When in the vehicle grooms, passenger/s and driver must have their feet firmly on the floor of the vehicle or use a suitable fixed footrest. This regulation applies at all times and in all areas on the showground.

6.3 All drivers/grooms/passengers under the age of 14 years must wear a correctly fitted hard hat when in a carriage or in attendance to a turnout.

6.4 Any dispute as to a person’s age or the age of an animal shall be determined in the absolute discretion of the relevant Judge where the dispute arises in relation to a particular class, and by a Committee appointed by the BDS in other instances. The Judge’s or Committee’s decision is final. Hackney Horse Society rules apply in relation to young drivers in Classes 20-24.

7. PRIZES7.1 The method of awarding prize money if any, whether in a show ring, by post after the Show or any other method

will be at the discretion of the BDS.7.2 Winners of trophies shall be responsible for their insurance, having them appropriately engraved and shall return

them at their own cost in good and clean condition by registered post as directed by the Show Organiser at least one month before the date of the next Show. Winners must ensure that any trophies are adequately packed and indemnify the Society against any loss or damage to any trophy whilst in their care or in transit.

8. PROTESTS AND DISPUTES8.1 Any exhibitor wishing to make a protest, in relation to any aspect of the Show, must make the same in writing to

the Show Organiser (and where such protest relates to an animal exhibited or other issue relating to a Class such protest must be made within 30 minutes of the Class being judged), and deposit the sum of £40.00 in cash which may, at the discretion of the BDS, be forfeited to the funds of the Society if the objection is disallowed.

8.2 Any protest shall be decided by a Committee appointed by the BDS, of which a minimum of three members shall be required and, if necessary, the Chairman of the Society shall have a casting vote. The decision of this Committee shall be final and it shall not be obliged to explain its decisions or enter into correspondence regarding them.

8.3 All disputes regarding these Rules or their interpretation shall be referred to the a Committee appointed by the BDS, whose decision shall be final.

9. DEFINITIONS In these Rules: “Society” means The British Driving Society Ltd., (Company Registration Number 04612597) Registered Office:

Templars House, Lulworth Close, Chandlers Ford, Hampshire SO53 3TL including where appropriate its officers, employees and representatives.

“the Show Organiser” means the person appointed by or on behalf of the Society to administer and organise the Show.

“the Show” means the Society’s show, Driving Addington “the Showground” means the site of the Show and its environs “Exhibitor” means a person who submits an entry form in accordance with these Rules whether or not also an

Owner or Competitor “Owner” means an owner of a horse, pony or vehicle entered in a class at the Show “Competitor” means a driver of a turnout at the Show whether or not an Exhibitor or Owner “Member” means a member of the Society. The singular includes the plural and the masculine the feminine and vice versa.
