SPCC Happenings
Saint Patrick’s Cathol ic Church
December 2012
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During this time of the year some of us may be very busy
with many things which, in themselves, are not that bad,
like Christmas parties, shopping, decorating, traveling,
etc. These things may add flavor to our celebration of
Christmas—making it the “best time” of the year.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle, we will hopefully
never take for granted to prepare ourselves spiritually.
The world around us may lead us away from the real
meaning of Christmas. It is the message of hope and joy.
As the angel said to the shepherd, “Do not be afraid, for,
behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will
be for all people, for today in the city of David is born for
you who is the Messiah and Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)
G. K. Chesterton once said that, without Christmas,
this time of the year will be nothing but cold winter.
May love, peace and joy be upon you and more bless-
ings throughout the new year too! May the spirit of
Christmas be always in our hearts.
Father Antonio Quijano—Pastor of St. Patrick’s
Parishioners had the opportunity to learn firsthand about
plans to construct a new multi-purpose building at special
receptions held during the month of December. The recep-
tions inaugurated the St. Patrick’s Parish Capital Cam-
paign: Preserving Our Past—Ensuring Our Future With
Christ As Center to provide a 10,500 square foot structure
to include offices, religious education classrooms, a large
meeting hall, and kitchen and laundry facilities.
Approximately 80 families attended the December 1, 2
and 5 get-togethers, while 120 individuals were recorded
at the December 12 reception. Parishioners were asked to
consider making a pledge payable, over a period of time,
toward the campaign’s goal of $1.5 million. Over
$160,000 in cash had already been raised prior to the re-
ceptions. The parish needs to collect $500,000 in cash and
$500,000 in pledges before the Diocese of Reno will loan
St. Patrick’s Church another $500,000 at which time con-

struction can begin.
The layout and architectural drawings of the new
multi-purpose building can be viewed on the project wall
of the Rose Room at the church. Greg Erny of Architects
Plus of Reno is the architect and Diversified Builders,
owned and operated by Dan Munoz, a St. Patrick’s pa-
rishioner, is the contractor.
“We received pledges at the receptions and continue
to receive them since then,” reported Jane Moon, Build-
Out Project Coordinator and parish corporate board mem-
ber. The fundraising campaign has set January 15, 2013,
as the date for most pledges to be completed although the
Build-Out Committee assures parishioners of flexibility
with regard to it.
The Build-Out Committee consists of the following
individuals: Jeanne Barnes, Lowell Black, Alicia Cen-
teno, Ron Flores, Mike & Pam Golding, Pat Heck, Brad
Jackson, Alan Kalt, Danette and Gary Laca, Tom Lukas,
Jane Moon, Paul Nelson, Judy Northrup, Phil Sabatino,
and, of course, Father Antonio Quijano, pastor of St. Pat-
rick’s Church. Anyone with any questions about the new
multi-purpose building or the capital campaign are en-
couraged to talk to the Build-Out Committee members.

Faith, Hope and Jubilation is the theme of this year’s an-
nual diocesan conference to be held on Fri., Jan. 11, and
Sat., Jan. 12, at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks.
According to the Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo,
Bishop of the Diocese of Reno, the weekend conference
“celebrates 30 years of gathering together to renew our
understanding of our faith and to rejoice in the good works
God brings about when we join as a Body.”
Workshops conducted during the course of the confer-
ence will reflect a close connection to the Year of Faith
and the celebration of the 50 years since Vatican II.
“Our speakers will explore the spirit and focus of the
many documents and decrees that were a result of the
prayerful study and conversation of those who were pre-
sent.,” Bishop Calvo said in a brochure which outlines the
event.
Topics include Teaching for Spiritual Growth, Evange-
lization Begins Within, The Grace and Legacy of Vatican
Council II, Hope: A “Bridge Over Troubled Water,”
Deepening Faith Through Music, Internet Safety for Par-
ents, Blessed Pope John XXIII: The Man and His Gift to
the Church, and many more.

parishioners are prepared by St. Patrick’s Youth Group for 87
families. More photos can be found on page 4 of this newsletter.
Deacon Kurt Carlson, M.D., Mike and Judy Northrup, and Mary
Thomas were among the many parishioners who attended the an-
nual parish Christmas dinner on Sun., Dec. 16, at the Fallon Con-
vention Center. St. Patrick’s added turkey and desserts to the pot-

St. Patrick’s Youth Group
Forty-three 1st and 2nd year confirmation
students participated in a retreat on Sun.,
Dec. 16, that concluded with their prepa-
ration of food bags for 87 families within
the community. Included were handwrit-
ten notes from the youth. During the re-
treat, the theme of which was “Social Jus-
tice,” the young men and women were
reminded to demonstrate the love and
kindness of Jesus by their kindness and
compassion to others. The St. Patrick’s
Youth Group provides opportunities to do
so by becoming involved in various ac-
tivities such as Fallon Daily Bread, leaf
raking for seniors, helping with Knights
of Columbus events, visiting shut-ins,
hosting at the Our Lady of Guadalupe
celebration, and, as seen Dec. 16, organiz-
ing donated food for the families.
