Stewardship Note: In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Je-sus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer and spending time with God that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

In our Gospel Reading from St. Mark, we hear the continuation of what we heard last week where Jesus preached in the synagogue on the Sabbath day. Today we hear what he did when he left the synagogue. We must remember that Jesus was in Capernaum. Capernaum was more or less the center of Jesus’ activities and ministry. It was also where the apostles Peter, James, Andrew, John, and Matthew were from. It is thus natural that the Lord would know many people there. The first thing we hear is that he visited Peter’s mother-in-law who was suffering with a fever. This act of healing is significant first because it was not in front of a large crowd, and second because it indicates that the Lord was interested in individuals. He loved them and cared for them, and was not doing it to promote himself. It was an unselfish act of stewardship. Also, reflective of how he dealt with the demons possessing the man last week, the Lord did it with authority and simplicity. Perhaps the most telling portion of this Gospel is what Jesus did the next morning. Rising early before dawn,

he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Jesus knew it was important to be alone with God if possible. We need to do the same. Jesus did not pray because he was weak, but because He was strong. He knew the source of His strength — God the Fa-ther. When we are busy and under pressure, as the Lord was, it becomes even more important to have a regular and active prayer life. Our personal prayer habits and policies need to reflect the same thing: this is especially important with Lent approaching.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS A teacher’s impact upon a student is profound and immeasurable. All of us remember a favorite teacher who made a great impression on us. Since teachers shape the lives of the young generation their educational quality and personal integrity has great importance. We cannot underesti-mate the power that a Catholic teacher has on their students. One impor-tant quality of a Catholic school teacher is that they must be convinced of their vocation, in other words, why they are here and why they are teach-ing. They are aware that their job is not simply employment but a mis-sion. They have the ability to translate knowledge into the wisdom of life. Pope Benedict XVI beautifully summarized the quality of Catholic teach-ers when he stated in the Encyclical Spe Salvi only the person who can show the students the way beyond the horizons of this life is a true teacher. St. Joseph School has dedicated teachers who, through their teaching, inspire interest in the meaning of life and fascination with the mystery of the universe which motivates our students to develop a proper vision in life.

REFLECTIONS ON CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK On Sunday, January 28, the St. Joseph School community gath-ered to kick-off Catholic Schools Week. The day began with a Mass celebrating National Migration Week, a tradition that the students look forward to each year. Our children and their families represent various cultures and enjoy sharing and recognizing each other’s heritage. Twenty-two countries were represented in the entrance procession: The United States, Armenia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Egypt, France, Ghana, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Lithuania, Poland, Por-tugal, Puerto Rico, Scotland, and Uganda. The students carried flags and wore costumes reflecting their heritage. Bishop Robert J.

McManus joined the festivities and preached that the diversity in our Church is an example to the country that we can all live together. He said that in Catholic schools students learn what it means to bring Christ to others.

Following Mass, our school hosted an Open House that highlighted the students’ research projects focusing on various aspects of the Olympics: the history, athletes, individual events, and the Special Olympics. Attendees were given a scavenger hunt and encouraged to find the answers in the students’ work. Attendees also had the opportu-nity to sample a variety of international foods and experience interna-tional entertainment that included: Irish Step dancing by the McIn-erney School of Irish Dance; soccer foot skills demonstrated by Brazil-ian soccer players Gabriel Souza and Jadson Leite of Boston City FC; and, the Worcester Youth Nian Dancers from the Southeast Asian Coali-tion performed a traditional Lion Dance. The dance, which originated in China, is a way to bring love to the new year. It was a great celebra-tion of Catholic education and the Cultural Diversity of St. Joseph School students!

RELIGIA Katecheza – zajęcia katechetyczne odbędą się w poniedziałek, 5 lutego o godz. 17:50 w szkole.

KIDS IN CHURCH A religious education teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted Bible pas-sages, Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the verse. Little Tommy was excited about the task but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled for their recitation in front of the congregation, Tommy was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly The Lord is my shepherd….and that’s all I need to know!

„Przynosili do Niego wszyst-kich chorych” (Mk 1, 32). Pomóc chorym znaleźć Jezusa – to bez wątpienia zadanie, jakie stoi przed nami. Dołożyć starań, by osoba chora lub starsza mo-gła wziąć udział w niedzielnej

NOWENNA DO ŚW.
