Pastor’s Corner Our Lenten Journey continues!

We are blessed to be able to offer various opportunities during the Lenten Season that can enhance our Lenten experience. There is something on just about each day of the week. Obviously, it is not possible for an individual to participate in every event, but it is our hope that by offering various opportunities, one is able to participate in something as their schedule allows.

I would take this opportunity to share some information about Lenten Vespers and Exposition/Benediction that is taking place on the Sunday afternoons of Lent. As many of you are aware, clergy and religious (and now many of the laity) pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. It is called Liturgy of the Hours (aka Divine Office) because various Psalms, Readings and Prayers are chanted or recited at various times throughout the day. The various prayers include Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Midmorning Prayer, Midday Prayer, Midafternoon Prayer, Evening Prayer (aka Vespers) and Night Prayer. Monastic and Religious Communities that are cloistered pray many of the Hours together. Diocesan clergy pray the Hours individually in most instances, but we pray them together at Convocations and larger gatherings of priests. In recent decades, many lay people have become interested in praying the Liturgy of the Hours. The major Hours are Office of Readings, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer. Each Hour involves the singing of a hymn and the chanting or recitation of some of the Psalms, Reading(s) from Scripture and Prayers. Through the Liturgy of the Hours, the Universal Church engages praying the same prayers throughout the day.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is when a consecrated host is placed in what is known as a monstrance and placed on the altar. People come and spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. This is known as Adoration. However, it is also possible to engage in Adoration by praying when the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle. Here at St. Cecilia, we have Exposition and Adoration each month beginning after the Daily Mass on the First Friday until just before the Saturday Evening Mass the following day. After a period of Exposition/Adoration, a priest or deacon is able to conduct what is known as Benediction. The Ritual for Benediction can be found in the Missalette on Page 63. Benediction is a blessing. However, the priest or deacon blesses those gathered with the Eucharist in the Monstrance.

On the Sundays of Lent at 4:00 p.m., we are gathering for Evening Prayer (Vespers). As we do so we begin by Exposing the Blessed Sacrament in the Monstrance, praying Vespers, and then concluding with Benediction. Incense is used. The gathering lasts about 30 minutes. All are welcome to join us.

God’s blessings!Father Leo Connolly

READINGS FOR MARCH 15THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Reading I – Exodus 17:3-7 Reading II – Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 Gospel – John 4:5-42

LIFE FOCUS QUESTIONS• Have there been moments in your life where you, like the Israelites,

questioned, “Is the Lord in our midst or not?” What helped you get through these times?

• In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul rejoices that “the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” Where do you find this love flowing freely in your own life? Where are you being called to pour out more love?

• Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, “The hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth.” How do you seek to worship God in Spirit and truth?

• Through the Samaritan woman’s witness, her townspeople welcome Jesus into their village and eventually come to believe he is the savior of the world. In your life of faith, who have been the witnesses who have led you to a relationship with Christ?

VOCATION VIEWS: THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENTThe Lord called Abraham to be the progenitor of the mighty nation of God’s people. This kind of spiritual parenthood is a fulfilling calling. Encourage those you know who have the gifts to be holy, healthly, celibate lovers of God’s people. (Genesis 12:1-4)

Days of Fast and Abstinence: Catholics 14 years of age and older are obligated to abstain from eating meat on all the Fridays of Lent. Good Friday, April 10, is a Day of Fast. Roman Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast, eating one meal along with two lesser meals.

Almsgiving Opportunities here in the parish include our weekly Food Pantry Collections. During this Lent, the St. Vincent de Paul Society will have a “Fifth Sunday” Collection on March 29. Diocesan collections in Lent include the Catholic Relief Services Collection on March 28/29 and the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land on April 10. You will find an envelope for these in your monthly packets and as options on Faith Direct. Families are also encouraged to participate in Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl program. This is their 44th Anniversary, and “For Lent, For Life” is the theme. More than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States participate in CRS Rice Bowl. More information is available at crsricebowl.org. You can pick up your family’s Rice Bowl in the Gathering Space this weekend.

Prayer Opportunities are available several days each week. We have daily Masses at 8:15 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. The Stations of the Cross will be prayed here on the Tuesdays and Fridays of Lent at 7:00 p.m. Our Intercessory Prayer group also meets each Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. in the Meditation Room. Lenten Vespers and Exposition will also be held each Sunday of Lent at 4:00 p.m.

Opportunities for Reconciliation: If you are seeking the Sacrament of Reconciliation, it is available every Saturday (except on Holy Saturday) at 4:00 p.m. in our Reconciliation Room (inside the Saint Cecilia Room doorway). The Joint Reconciliation Service for parishes in the West Deanery will be held here at St. Cecilia on Sunday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m. All are invited.

SILENCE IN HOLY MASS DURING LENTDuring Lent, the clergy wear purple vestments, the color for the penitential season, and the sanctuary is quite “bare” without flowers until Easter. We also have more silence during the Holy Mass in Lent than in Ordinary time. The organ/piano is suppressed. It’s used only to support the singing, and there will be no organ/piano solo in accordance with the Church’s instructions. This will allow us to pray more quietly and listen to Jesus’ voice, thus preparing ourselves to participate more fully in the joyful celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection.

This Lent at St. Cecilia, we will be continuing what we started in Advent with Bishop Barron’s Pivotal Players Series. The series

is being offered on each of the 6 Mondays of Lent, March 2nd-April 6 at 7:00 p.m. Once again, the series will be led by parishioner Tony Stout. Refreshments will not be provided, but you are welcome to bring a beverage or snack for yourselves if you like. The videos take roughly one hour and there will be time for discussion afterwards. The schedule of videos will be:• March 9th: St. Thomas Aquinas• March 16th: St. Catherine of Siena• March 23rd: G.K. Chesterton• March 30th: St. John Henry Newman• April 6th: Participant Choice; Flannery O’Conner or Michael

In the Central Ohio area, an average of 50 people need blood each day. Unfortunately, only 5% of eligible donors will donate to help these people

in need. One person can help up to three people by donating blood. Those who donate are truly lifesavers! The Knights of Columbus Council 5899 will be hosting a Blood Drive for the Red Cross on Thursday, March 19 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. in the Saint Cecilia Room. A typical blood donation takes approximately an hour, with the actual donation time about 20 minutes. Why not schedule some time to give the gift of life? Donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in good health, and have identification (Red Cross Blood Donors Card, Ohio Driver’s license, or a State ID).

Please join the ladies of Walking with Purpose for either a morning or evening potluck on Thursday, March 26th at either 9:15 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. Are you curious about what Walking with Purpose is, or do you just want to socialize with other ladies? It doesn't

matter. We'd love to have you join us on the 26th. We will also be watching a video about Mary, the untier of knots. If you have questions or would like to RSVP, please contact Sharon Reinhard at [email protected].

Page 5: Saint Cecilia Church...Saint Cecilia Church Vision Statement Formed by the Word of God, nourished at the Eucharistic table, led by the Holy Spirit, and sustained by the community,

It is not too late to join us for our TMIY Lenten Journey! In our last session, Steve talked to us about a deep desire and thirst for Jesus Christ. In our March

14th session, he will help us grow into a deeper friendship with Christ with his talk – Learning the Secrets of God. We understand on a human level how to have a friendship with another person and share our lives with that person. How about our friendship with Christ? Our goal this Lent should be to grow closer to Christ and understand the secrets of His heart. Steve will share the unique relationship between Mary and the Holy Spirit. He will also teach us about the deep relationship between Saint Joseph and God. TMIY is a great way to enrich your spirituality and bring you closer to God. Here are some topics that Steve will cover on Saturday:• Understanding the Knowledge that Transcends Words• How God Reveals His Divine Life to Us• Understanding the Mystery of the Holy Trinity• The Temple of God at Home in Nazareth• Pathway to the Heights of the Mystical Union with GodIf you have been attending, please keep coming back and bring a friend. If you have not had a chance to attend a TMIY session, please join the 40 or so men that have been coming to TMIY each week. You will be glad you took the chance. You will definitely grow in your Catholic faith. What have you got to lose? The next session is on Saturday, March 14th in Meeting Rooms A and B. The program starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 8:30 a.m. The doors open at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and fellowship. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about your faith! Please bring a friend with you! Contact Joe Reinhard at 419 564-6975 or Michael Hermosilla at 614 506-2303 for more information.

INTERCESSORY PRAYERWednesday – 11:15 a.m.

Join us in the Meditation Room as we pray for repentance and conversion.

IS HELP NEEDED?If you or a family member can use any of the things mentioned below, please ask one of our Ministers of Hospitality for help before Mass.• We have gluten-free hosts available. Please inform the Minister of

Hospitality that one is needed. The host will be consecrated with the others. You will need to be in the Communion line for Father.

• For those with mobility issues, you may request that Communion be brought to your seat. The Minister of Hospitality will then let our Ministers of Communion know.

• We have auditory assistance devices which may be used during Mass. They amplify the sounds.

SAINT CECILIA PARISH FESTIVALPLANNING MEETINGWe will have our first 2020 Festival Planning Meeting on Wednesday, March 11. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A & B. Anyone interested in helping plan our 2020 festival is most welcome to attend!

SUNDAY BULLETIN DEADLINESGroups with upcoming events are reminded that Tuesdays by 12:00 noon is our regular deadline for the Sunday bulletins. Submissions can be e-mailed to [email protected]. Early warning: We have these early deadlines coming up: for the April 5 (Palm Sunday) bulletin, please get your information to us by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25. For the Easter (April 12) issue, please send any information by 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1. Thank you!

During Lent, we prepare ourselves through prayer and giving back to our parish. But, with busy lives and active families, it's easy to skip a

weekly tithe when you are unable to attend Mass or are out of town.

This Lent, you are invited to join many others at St. Cecilia in setting up recurring e-Giving though Faith Direct. Thanks to e-Giving, your weekly offertory will be automatically taken care of, which saves you time and saves our parish money by eliminating all those unused offertory envelopes.

Getting started is easy! Simply visit faith.direct/OH857, to get started. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family.

The Knights of Columbus are hosting their Annual Lenten Fish Fries each Friday evening through April 3rd. The hours of operation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:30

p.m. Dine-In will be held in the School Hall and a Drive-thru will be available outside the Parish Center kitchen. A dinner will cost: Adult – $10.00, Senior – $9.00, Child – $4.50, Family – $32.00. Dinner will include: Choice of Baked Cod, Shrimp, Or All-You-Can-Eat Fried Perch, Baked Potato Or French Fries, Cole Slaw Or Mac & Cheese, Green Beans, Bread, Dessert and Drink. All dinners can be made into a Combo for an additional charge. Sandwiches available for $3.00 each, Boxes of Fried Fish (Drive-thru only) are available for $7.00 each.

7TH GRADE SILENT AUCTIONThe 7th Grade Class of Saint Cecilia School will hold its 51st Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 18. The profits raised from these events will help fund an educational class trip during the students’ eighth grade year. At this time, we are asking for items to auction during the events. Gift Certificates for goods and services; Gift Cards for restaurants or stores; or items of value (jewelry, china, crystal, memorabilia, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. Of course, monetary donations are greatly appreciated as well. If you can donate, or know of an organization or business which may be willing to contribute, please contact Katie Wohrle at [email protected]. Thank you for your support.

The St. Cecilia Class of 2021 will be continuing to collect any new or used shoes you may have through the end of

May. They have collected several hundreds of pairs of shoes so far, but the goal is 2,500 pairs! By donating shoes, you are not only helping the students raise money for their 8th grade class trip, but are also providing much needed shoes to individuals in third world countries. Collection boxes can be found in the Church Gathering Space, School Office, and Parish Center (gym) lobby. The shoes can be in any condition and of any type, and we accept all sizes! As you clean out your closets for Spring, or your children outgrow or wear out their current shoes, please consider donating them to this fundraiser!

HELP TO STOP THE SPREAD OF GERMS AND VIRUSES Since we are still in the midst of the influenza season and with growing concerns regarding the potential spread of the coronavirus/COVID-19, all parishioners are asked to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of spreading these illnesses. Washing hands thoroughly before and after attending Mass is every bit as important as doing so before and after meals at home. If you are not feeling well, offering the Sign of Peace may be done in the form of a head nod or just saying “Peace be with you.” You should also refrain from taking the Precious Blood from the chalice. It is also important to note that if you are ill or even experiencing symptoms of illness, you are not obliged to attend Mass.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY UPDATEThe St. Cecilia Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting in the St. Cecilia Room from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Because of schedule conflicts, the group will meet on the 3rd Saturday instead of the 1st.
