PASTOR’S PARISHABLES

This Sunday’s Eucharist feast (“Body & Blood of Christ

Sunday”) sent me to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

for a succinct teaching about “the fruits of holy

communion” (paragraphs 1391-1397): 1. Causes an intimate

union with Christ; 2. preserves, increases, & renews the life of

grace received at baptism; 3. cleanses past sins & preserves from

future sins; 4. strengthens the unity among members of the

Church; & 5. fosters a commitment to the poor. This is something we may wish to keep from this year’s Body & Blood of Christ

Sunday, so we know what to look for, hope for, pray for.

During the rainy & snowy & difficult spring this year, have

we been aware of farmers’ plight? Have we ever! Some of us

have a collection of prayers composed by others that work for us.

Here’s one for farmers these days, & at a time of testing for those

who work on the land: “God of all creation, we are mindful of the

many gifts & blessings you shower upon us. With unending love

& generosity, you nourish & sustain us with food in great variety

& measure. You grace us with dedicated & hardworking farmers who care for the land & produce our food. We ask you to hear

our prayers for farmers & others whose noble work feeds &

nourishes us all. Keep them safe & healthy. Bless them with a

harvest of spiritual benefits & just returns for their labor as they

know the support & gratitude of the community, especially during

difficult times. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Pope John 23rd died on June 3, 1963—50 years ago this coming

Monday. He’s the pope who called for an “ecumenical council,”

the 1st of its kind since 1869-70 & the 21st in our Catholic history.

(Like the one almost a century earlier, it was to be held at the Vatican, hence its name “Vatican II”.) When Pope Benedict 16th

called for a Year of Faith, he scheduled it to begin on the 50th

anniversary of the convening of the Second Vatican Council.

We’re now about half way through this Year of Faith

(October 11, 2012 – November 24, 2013).

One of the ways I chose to participate in this observance

(& to keep it in mind week to week) was to include in each

week’s bulletin a quotation from the Vatican II documents.

So that’s 20-some already—alright, some weeks I forgot or ran

out of room—but I’m hopeful that all of us are a little more

familiar with the spirit & teachings of that great council. This

weekly sampling (the most important or often quoted or simply

my favorites) may help those who’ve never been exposed to these

documents get acquainted. For some of us, it will be a reminder

of some of the better known statements of Vatican II.

About those documents of Vatican II: There are 16; the 4 called

“constitutions” have most authority & treat topics at the heart of

our faith (the Church, the Church “in the Modern World,”

the Bible & the liturgy). The 9 documents called “decrees” speak less authoritatively & about concerns less central to Catholic faith

(about communications, ecumenism, Eastern Churches, bishops,

priestly formation, religious formation, the laity, priests, &

missions). The remaining 3 are “declarations” on topics, not

“defining” our faith (about education, non-Christians, & religious

freedom).

It was 3 years before its convening that Pope John 23rd

(on January 25, 1959) first spoke the words "ecumenical council"

to the College of Cardinals in Rome—words (it was later said)

that were "like a flash of heavenly light, shedding sweetness in

eyes & hearts & giving rise to a great fervor throughout the

world in expectation of the holding of the Council.” Motivated by

his pastoral experience & undoubtedly inspired by the

Holy Spirit, Pope John decided it was time to “pour new wine

into fresh wineskins,” as Jesus said (Mark 2:18-22; also Luke

5:33-39).

Three years later, on October 11, 1962, in his opening address

to the Council, Pope John said, "We feel we must disagree with

those prophets of doom, who are always forecasting disaster, as

though the end of the world were at hand. In the present order of

things, Divine Providence is leading us to a new order of human relations which are directed toward the fulfillment of God's

superior & inscrutable designs.” The pope then prayed,

invoking the Holy Spirit for the success of the Council, "Renew

thy wonders in this day, as by a new Pentecost."

The flame of that new Pentecost is something we want to flare

up in us. We can help rekindle this fire by reacquainting

ourselves with the new life & spirit of Vatican II. That Council is

certainly one of the ways that God’s promise is being fulfilled:

"The old order has passed away. Behold, I make all things

new" (Revelation 21:4-5). So, half way through our Year of

Faith, this week’s Words of Vatican II come from its Decree on

The Laity (section 4):

It was good to see the strong & confident statement of our

diocesan Catholic Church this week (May 29th) after also reading

in the paper about one of the ripples of Minnesota’s “Child

Victim’s Act”: “The Diocese of Winona is committed to the

protection of children & the safe environment of our parishes &

schools. The Diocese of Winona has fully adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children & Young People, as promulgated

by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Diocese of

Winona works vigorously & has taken extraordinary measures to

ensure that all of the schools, parishes & programs administered

in the Diocese adhere to the Charter to ensure that those

entrusted to our care are safe. Few, if any, other religious or

charitable institutions have taken such steps to ensure the safety

of their children. The Diocese of Winona respectfully declines

to comment on the litigation announced today, as the matter is

currently under investigation. We believe that the abuse of young

people & children is a tragic problem throughout our society, & we stand united with those who seek to end the abuse of our

children. As we have done in the past, we encourage anyone with

knowledge of misconduct within a Catholic parish or school to

contact the civil authorities & the Diocese of Winona Victim

Assistance Coordinator at (507) 454-2270, Ext. 255.”

“[The] life of intimate union with Christ in the Church is

nourished by spiritual aids which are common to all the

faithful, especially active participation in the sacred liturgy.

These are to be used by the laity in such a way that while

properly fulfilling their secular duties in the ordinary conditions of life, they do not disassociate union with Christ

from that life. Rather, by performing their work according to

God’s will they can grow in that union. In this way must the

laity make progress in holiness, showing a ready & happy

spirit, & trying prudently & patiently to overcome difficulties.

Neither family concerns nor other secular affairs should be

excluded from their religious program of life. For as the

Apostle states, ‘Whatever you do in word or work, do all in

the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the

Father through him’ (Col. 3:17).”
