WELCOME NEW MEMBERS OF POP Recently, we held our new member class and celebrated on Sunday, February 23rd with a reception for our eight new families. PoP offers membership classes twice a year (spring and fall) for all who are interested in understanding what it is to be a disciple of Jesus and how Prince of Peace can fit into your faith journey. Please extend a warm welcome to... (large group photo (far right, L to R): Tracy & Christina Sikes with their two daughters, Karen Adler-Fischer, Donna Schou, Susan Sjoquist, Patricia Meulemans, and Sharon & Larry Olski. Near right photo is the Summersett family, Jon & Melissa with their three children. For more information about membership contact Cindy Romnek, 739-5255.
HILDEGARD BAUH’S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION On Feb. 23rd, we celebrated our PoP family member Hildegard Bauh’s 100th birthday with cake and refreshments provided by her family between services! Hildegard was born in Germany before she immigrated to America as a young girl with her family. Following new
found friends to Wisconsin, they settled here in Appleton where she eventually first became a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Joining PoP with her family in 1969, Hildegard has been an ‘actively engaged’ member ever since, sharing her faith in many ways here at PoP. If you’d like to hear her tell a little about her faith story, check out the video posted on the front/bottom page of our website (www.popappleton.org). Thank you Hildegard for sharing your journey with us all!

Lets’ Share the Hope that is Within Us!
“Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;”
1 Peter 3:15 (NRSV)
Some topics I can talk about endlessly: Star Trek, NASA, being an insulin-dependent diabetic, the Cleveland Browns,
DSLR photography, camping, pictures of my grandson. I can talk about all of these things because I have personal
experience with them and they are important to me. I’ve lived them. Also, my expertise didn’t happen overnight, but a
little bit at a time. All these are very personal to me, but none are ultimately life-changing. They are fun, but they don’t
give me ultimate hope. Only my faith in Jesus does that. That by far is the most central to who I am, but, at times, it is
the most difficult to talk about.
That last statement may surprise you. You might say, “But you’re a pastor! That’s your job! Don’t you do that every
day?” Yes, I do! And now having been a pastor for most of my adult life, I’ve found it much easier to talk about my
faith than I did years ago, because I intimately know the Bible and what I believe as a Lutheran Christian. But also
because I have heard and met people with a variety of faith stories and experiences, which is always shaping my im-
age of how Christ reveals himself to me every day. Yet that comfort with sharing my personal faith didn’t come auto-
matically or easily. It required practice and prayer. So when I read the words of St. Peter, who was in Rome, during
one of the first persecutions of Christians, which was a persecution that he would die in, his words touch me deeply:
“Always be ready to make your defense….for the hope that is in you.”
Now I realize that Christians in our society thankfully aren’t in danger of dying for our faith. And it is impolite to talk
about religion and politics in public, as I was taught as a kid. However, if we don’t share our faith with each other at
church, then how will we share it when we really need it? How will we share it when trying to give hope to someone we
encounter who is in need? How will we access our faith when we are in need?
Sharing our faith doesn’t just happen. It is like anything else we do and want to be good at. It requires practice. It
doesn’t come naturally and we need others to help us. Well. fortunately we have an entire faith family to help us.
That is why during Lent (and moving forward) our Long Range Planning Ministry is inviting us to create one minute
“Faith Talks” and our Midweek Lenten services will be featuring, once again, a variety of members as they share their
extended faith stories. We will put all of these faith stories from kids to adults (whom we have their permission) on
our website, so that others inside and outside our walls may be inspired by the hope that is within us. As we send
those out, we do so with a prayer that God will use our words to kindle faith within others too. Think of the blessing
this would be to others if we had hundreds of stories for others to witness? Think how powerfully that could help oth-
ers. Also, don’t think you have to be an expert to share your faith. We are all experts on ourselves and how God is ac-
tive in our lives. Other than God, nobody knows us better than we know ourselves. And your story may be just the
hope that someone else needs to hear – and that we need to share! Don’t miss out sharing your Faith Talk with our
faith family and beyond by giving an account of the hope that is within you!
Joy, Feel free to sign up to be recorded at church or submit a selfie
version of your FAITH TALK on our website at:
http://www.popappleton.org/about-us/faith-talks.html.

EQUIPPED TO DO LIVE STREAMING!
In keeping with our digital worship initiative to spread the
good news of Christ, we have the cameras and licenses
in place to start live streaming our services! We haven't
set up a specific plan yet as to which service(s) will be
live streamed, but we have the capability. As of now, we'll
share worship services on our PoP Facebook page, but
will look into other venues (e.g. directly on our website or
YouTubeLive or ??). If you are interested in helping set
up, or capturing, our live streaming from the AV Control
room using our church cameras, please contact Tom
Richmond ([email protected]). While the focus
will be on what's happening up front during services,
there may be times the camera is directed towards the
congregation/pews. If you have concerns about being
seen on live streaming/video, please contact the church
office or Pastor Roger. Thank you!
5. NATIONAL SECURITY Our addiction to imported oil has
huge national security implications. The U.S. spends
nearly a half-billion dollars on foreign oil every day, most-
ly for transportation. Every time you fill up your car,
you’re sending a check to foreign countries to pay for
their oil. Why not send your money to the local electric
utility or neighborhood solar installer instead?
6. PERFORMANCE Plug-in vehicles offer a quiet, smooth
and powerful ride. An electric motor provides full torque
from a standstill and completely changes the experience
of getting onto a fast-moving highway. They are dependa-
ble and useful in many ways. There are over 50 models
available, one to fit any budget.
(Submitted by Tom McNeely, member of GEOH at PoP.)
GODS EARTH—OUR HANDS (GEOH)
‘POINTS TO PONDER’ -
CONSIDER A USED ELECTRIC CAR
AS A SECOND VEHICLE
There are many things one can do to be a good steward
of God’s Earth. In my first article, I will go over some per-
sonal experiences with having a used electric car as a
2nd Vehicle.
Back in 2013, we had two hybrid Toyota Camrys and for
fun, we test drove a Nissan Leaf at a used car lot. We
enjoyed how it zipped around and its utility. My wife and I
discussed it and we went over our budget and decided to
sell one of the Camrys and use the money towards a
Leaf. We got around $5000 for the Camry and I did a
search and found a Leaf for $10K. I used Autotrader at
the time and was pleased with the transaction. The car
has served us well for 6 years now and has never need-
ed any maintenance. It is our main car for shopping,
commuting, running errands, etc. The decision to get this
car was never second-guessed.
Here are some great points from Plug In America maga-
zine about going EV (electric vehicle; as found at https://
pluginamerica.org/why-go-plug-in/).
1. AFFORDABILITY On average, fueling a car with electric-
ity is roughly the same as gas at $1/gallon of fueling with
gasoline, thanks to EV’s performance efficiency and the
lower cost of electricity. Electricity prices are also far
more stable than gasoline prices, allowing drivers to
avoid the risk of future price spikes.
2. AIR QUALITY Despite the continued improvement, too
many people in the U.S. live where the air is unhealthy
for them to breathe. EVs have no tailpipe and therefore
no emissions – imagine how clean the air could be
around you with everyone driving an EV!
3. CONVENIENCE EVs never require a trip to the gas sta-
tion, tune-ups, transmission repairs, spark plugs or oil
changes. Your hands will never smell like toxic petro-
chemicals. EVs have far fewer moving parts than gaso-
line cars. There’s no engine, transmission, spark plugs,
valves, fuel tank, tailpipe, distributor, starter, clutch, muf-
fler, or catalytic converter. There are a lot fewer things to
break down, so maintenance costs are much lower.
4. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP EVs powered by the
grid currently produce 54 percent less (lifetime) carbon
pollution than gasoline cars, which could grow to 71 per-
cent by 2050 as our power supply gets cleaner. Even
better, installing solar panels on your roof drops your
car’s carbon pollution close to zero. Wouldn’t you rather
get your fuel from your roof than ship it on tankers from
halfway around the world?

1. How do you handle book donations? First of all, I
check to see if the book is already part of the library
collection. If it is not, then I look at when it was pub-
lished. Some topics get outdated quickly whereas
others are timeless. If I question the subject matter
I ask one of the pastors to review the item and de-
termine whether it should be added to the library. If
I am told who is making the donation a bookplate
identifying the donor is placed inside the front cov-
er. If the book is in memory of a loved one, the
bookplate identifies who that is.
2. What do you do with a book you already have or can’t
use? If you would like the item returned, please
leave a note to that effect. Otherwise, it will go into
the Little Free Library, a local charity like Goodwill or
saved for the annual AAUW (American Association of
University Women) book sale.
3. Where is the Little Free Library? You may have no-
ticed it isn’t currently in the East parking lot. After
several years of being exposed to the elements, it
was in need of some repairs which will be made by
the property committee. It will be getting new sid-
ing, new roof and new doors to protect the books
from Wisconsin weather. Watch for its return. You
can find updates on Facebook at Prince of Peace
Little Free Library. “Like” and “follow” for infor-
mation.
4. What do I do if I want to make a monetary donation
designated for the library? You have to let the office
know it is for the library and note it on your check. If
it is a memorial, please note that as well and feel
free to suggest what you’d like to see the money
used for. This works well if you have a book in mind
but don’t know if it is already in the library. I can
check and avoid duplicating what we already have.
Donating money to supplement the library budget is
always appreciated.
5. What’s in the future for the library? The computer in
the library is going to be updated. If that changes
how you can access the library’s contents, new in-
structions will be printed and tacked up on the wall
next to the monitor.
Watch for a survey asking for suggestions of what
you’d like to see added to the collection.

PoP PAGE TURNERS BOOK CLUB: The PoP Page Turners meet the 3rd Thursday of each
month at 1:30 pm in the PoP library. Our next meeting
will be Thursday, March 19th.
The book to read for March is:
Before We Were Yours,
by Lisa Wingate.
Synopsis: Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-
old Rill Foss and her four younger sib-lings live a magical life aboard their fam-ily’s Mississippi River shanty boat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Ten-nessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss chil-dren are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and un-certainty.
Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scan-dals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riv-eting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many plac-es, the heart never forgets where we belong.
Future readings will be April 16th Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Lanvik; May 21st Breakdown Lane by Jacquelyn Mitchard; and June 18th Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki My-ron.
We are always looking for new perspectives and welcome
others to join us.

LIBRARY CORNER 6. How can I help out in the library? Volunteers to help
with an inventory of the church library are needed.
To keep what is in the Little Free Library fresh,
books need to be removed and replaced with oth-
ers on a regular basis. We have a supply of books
for adults, children and intermediate readers to se-
lect from. The Facebook page could use regular
posts to encourage reading and the use of POP’s
Little Free Library. Opportunities for volunteering in
the library will be combined with the survey men-
tioned in #5. ~ See PoP Librarian, Shirley Walker, with questions!
ATTENTION SENIORS – “HI-FIVERS” – 55+ YEARS! Come join us for a delicious potluck and to B-I-N-G-O and on Thursday, March 26thth at 11:30 p.m. Prizes and
snacks provided. Bring a friend to share in the fun and fellowship. Watch for more information in the Sunday’s an-
nouncements. For more information, contact Joyce Lee or Cindy Romnek.
SPRING GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS The Grief support group opens the door to healing and can provide emotional, physical and spiritual support in a safe
and non-judgmental environment for adults who have experienced death of a loved one. The small groups are availa-
ble for those who have had a loss of a spouse, parent, sibling, child, co-worker and friend. Grief has no timeline, so
your loss may be recent or in the past. These groups are also open to people you may know that are not members of
Prince of Peace, but would benefit from being a part of a group. Each support group will meet for 8 sessions with a
time frame of 90-120 minutes each session. Prince of Peace will offer two different time options to hopefully meet
the needs of those interested during the spring months. The support groups are facilitated by Nancy Scheuerman,
PoP member. If you are interested being part of the group, please pick up an interest form HERE or at the Welcome
window. Interest forms can be turned into Nancy Scheuerman’s mailbox located in the staff office hallway at ANY
TIME. For more information, contact Nancy Scheuerman at [email protected] or 920-731-9847.
PRINCE OF PEACE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES One of our core values of our church family at Prince of Peace is service. We believe that we are the heart, hands
and feet of Jesus in this world. There are many opportunities to serve throughout the year as part of an ongoing or
one-time commitment. Check out our website volunteering page or monthly bulletin insert “You Can Count on Me”
for current and ongoing volunteer opportunities. Contact Cindy Romnek with questions.
CHECK OUT SOME GREAT RESOURCES TO HELP BUILD UP OUR SPIRITUAL FAITH: Books
What is the Bible? by Rob Bell – A fascinating exploration of how these ancient words still speak fresh wisdom and
hope into life. A guide to helping us rethink what we think about the Bible.
Eat this Book by Eugene Peterson – A helpful guide to reading the Bible and applying it to daily life.
Websites
Pray-as-You-Go.org – A beautifully done audio resource to help listeners pray through scripture.
ODB.org – the Our Daily Bread devotion, a longtime favorite of many. They website also has a great app to down-
load!
HELPING HANDS FIX IT TEAM – Helping Hands (connecting members of our congregation in times of need and times of joy) provides many oppor-
tunities and building upon our outreach at Prince of Peace. One of our areas of outreach is “Fix It”. The express
purpose of the Helping Hands Fix It team is to help POP members who are need of small repairs and maintenance
that request help at their home, apartment, or condo. Some of the small projects could be anything from repairing
doorbells, fixing screens, hooking up appliances or setting up a computer. Some requested work may be beyond
the scope of the Helping Hands Ministry. In those cases, we will endeavor to recommend for you to seek out a con-
tractor. Helping Hands does not charge a fee for the work they do; however, any monies received will be go into the
Helping Hands designated fund. As our church continues to grow, so do the opportunities to be the hands and feet
of Christ to serve others. For more information, contact Bob Merrill, Helping Hands Fix It Leader at

JoyUS SPECIAL NEEDS WORSHIP SERVICES
‘JoyUS’ is a monthly ecumenical community worship service specifically designed for individuals with Special Needs
and their families. The first JoyUS service was offered on February 9th at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Combined
Locks. Three families made their way out to attend the worship service, despite all the snow that just kept falling and
falling! It was a very special service, with camp songs, sign language, and an art activity that everyone could partici-
pate in. Prince of Peace, along with multiple area congregations, will continue to be a part of the planning and coordi-
nation of JoyUS, to provide a meaningful and inclusive worship in the Fox Cities. The next service dates are March 15th,
April 19th and May 17th, all at 2 pm at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Combined Locks.
ATTENTION CONFIRMATION STUDENTS
– 6TH TO 8TH GRADERS !!!
It’s time to register for Confirmation Camp held at Cross-
ways Camping Ministry’s Imago dei Village site, in Clin-
tonville. Prince of Peace youth participate annually and
this year we’re going the week of June 14-19th.
REGISTRATION for camp is OPEN NOW online on the
Crossways website at www.crosswayscamps.org/
register. (An informational email was sent to families in
February with how to register online. If you didn’t receive
it, or need us to resend, please contact Brigetta.)
PAYMENTS for camp are done directly through Prince of
Peace. And the best part is, PoP will be contributing
$175 scholarships for each of the first 20 students who
register online (see above). We want as many kids as
possible to be able to experience this amazing faith
growing opportunity with their Confirmation peers!
COSTS: Crossways offers an ’early bird’ rate of $440 for
those registering before March 15th. (Registration after
March 15th is $455.) Therefore, the cost to PoP camp-
ers with the scholarship, if you register by March 15th,
will only be $265.
To ensure your son/daughter's registration spot, we are
offering the following payment schedule:
By March 15th - Register online; pay at least $150 down
to Prince of Peace.
By April 5th - The remaining /full balance owed (if any) is
due.
So, you have the option of doing this as a one-time, or
multiple, payment with checks made out to "Prince Of
Peace Lutheran Church" with “Confirmation Camp" writ-
ten in the memo.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH • APPLETON, WI VISION 2024 STATEMENT: ...to be an engaged and inclusive congregation of disciples,
transforming the lives in our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS OF ORDINATION FOR WOMEN IN THE ELCA, and so much more!
With gratitude for those who have gone before and hope for the future, the ELCA gives thanks to God for the
ministry of women. In 2019 and 2020 we celebrate 50 years of Lutheran women being ordained in the Unit-
ed States, 40 years of women of color being ordained, and 10 years of LGBTQIA+ individuals being able to
serve freely. (Continued at ELCA website.)
As part of this anniversary year, along with many congregations throughout the world, we lament that women
have been barred from serving and have been bullied, dismissed and excluded. Therefore, let us now cele-
brate the gifts and service that women have brought to our church and our world as pastors. Please join PoP
as we commemorate ordained women of the ELCA by honoring Pastor Jennifer on March 15th with a special
recognition during worship services that day!
