Each year, Cedar Creek teachers
nominate a senior to represent the
school as the Daughters of the Ameri-
can Revolution Good Citizen. The
honoree must exemplify the qualities
of dependability, service, leadership,
and patriotism. This year’s DAR Good
Citizen, Elisabeth Doyal Hunt, repre-
sented the Long Leaf Pine chapter of
DAR and competed in the Good Citizen
essay and scholarship contest. She
won district and will now be compet-
ing in the state competition.

Third grade news
The third grade classes at Cypress Springs Elementary have been very
busy this second nine weeks! We have rested up over the holidays and
started 2021 off with a great start.
In ELA this nine weeks we have been reading “Because of Winn Dixie”
and learning all about unlikely friendships.
In social studies we have been learning about the Poverty Point Indians
and other Native American tribes that influenced Louisiana’s culture.
In science the students are learning about survival and getting ready
to learn about traits. For math the students are working on division facts
and learning all about area. We hope 2021 will be an exceptional year here
at CSE!
Fourth grade news
In Module 5, students are building their understanding of finding equiva-
lent fractions to include generating rules as they describe what happens
to the number of parts in the whole (denominator) and the number of
pieces in the count (numerator) when they compare equivalent fractions.

CYPRESS SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (continued)
Equivalent fractions can be writ-
ten by dividing or multiplying the
numerator and denominator.
Things to do at home to help your
student:
- Continue to practice multiplica-
tion and division facts to help mul-
tiply and divide to find equivalent
fractions.
- When working with a recipe, give
your child a fractional amount and
have them identify an equivalent
fraction using multiplication. Ask
how they could also use division to
find an equivalent fraction.
Fifth grade news
Our fifth grade ELA students are
approaching the end of Unit 2, “The
Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,”
where they have worked on analyz-
ing characters and determining
themes. In the coming weeks, they
will be taking end of unit assess-
ments by writing essays and reading
and comprehending complex texts.
In social studies, we are approach-
ing the end of Unit 2, European
Explorers, where we have discussed
explorers, conquistadors, and the
Columbian Exchange and its impact
on different groups. In the coming
weeks, they will be taking an end
of unit assessment where they will
be required to analyze sources and
answer text dependent questions, as
well as respond to a writing prompt
using the sources.
In science, students will be begin-
ning Module 3: Earth Systems. The
“You Be the Chemist” contest is
also coming up, and messages will
be sent out through Dojo. If you do
not receive one then please let your
child’s teacher know.
In math, students are finalizing
their work in Module 3: adding and
subtracting fractions with unlike
denominators. Next, they will begin
Module 4: multiplying and dividing
fractions.
Wildcat Reading Club
Members of the Wildcat Reading
Club have been hard at work! Each
grade level has enjoyed reading a
variety of stories and working on
different reading skills throughout
this year. Third grade students have
been busy doing a little detective
work.
Students have been engaged in
solving mysteries. Students had to
analyze a case file and crime scene
photo to make inferences based on
the evidence provided. Students
completed challenging questions in
order to find evidence to defend their
inferences. Then, students used all
the clues collected to solve the mys-
tery. Watch out, Sherlock Holmes!
Fourth graders have enjoyed read-
ing the emotional story A Thirst for
Home about a young girl from Ethio-
pia and the challenges she faces on
a daily basis to have access to water
and the difficult decision her mother
makes to give her a better life. The
story was inspiring and sparked
excellent conversations about how
critical water is to our existence and
how it connects all people.

DUBACH SCHOOL
The Dubach Hornets are ringing in the New Year with big
dreams. Each month since October, we have sent home a Family
Engagement activity and it has been a big success. Our January
Family Engagement activity was to have the students talk with
their families about what they want to be when they grow up and
to set a goal for the remainder of the school year. Each student
had the opportunity to write their responses on a cloud for ev-
eryone to see on display in the hallways throughout the school.
The Hornets have been making time for reading by partici-
pating in our school-wide 100 Book challenge. The challenge is
broken up into 10, 20, 30 and 40 Book Challenges. The 20 Book
ended on Jan. 4. All of the participants were able to pick two
Scholastic Books, and their names were entered into a raffle for
a $20 gift card.
First grader Daniel Scarborough was the winner of the gift
card. The fourth grade class had the most participants in the 20
Book Challenge, and all of the participants knew exactly what
books they wanted when asked to place their Scholastic Book
order. The students are now participating in the 30 Book Chal-
lenge which ends on Feb. 22.
Dubach had several families participate in the Lincoln Parish
Schools “Build a Snowman” contest. One of our Pre-K students,
Addilyn Blakely, was a winner of a Dairy Queen gift card because
of the Snow Kitty that she made. Addilyn wanted to make sure
that everyone knew that the eyes and nose were made of candy.

School news
Over the Christmas holiday, Hill-
crest Elementary students were en-
couraged to continue their at-home
reading. Books and a Christmas
Reading Log were sent home with
each student before the holidays. Ap-
proximately 100 students completed
their reading log and read over 1,200
books! We are so proud of our stu-
dents and their love of reading!
Kindergarten highlights
Kindergarten has finished our
second ARC Unit on Zoology. We are
excited to start Unit 3 on Ecology. We
will read a lot of books and become
ecologists and learn how plants and
animals work together.
We also enjoyed our fun Snow Day.
The students had fun drawing and
writing about their snow adventures
in writing workshop. We are also
looking forward to our 100 days of
school celebration in February.
Second grade highlights
Students in second grade are
having a very productive year! They
just completed their fourth module
in math and also a second reading
unit. Our second graders are daily
becoming stronger math students.
They are mastering foundational
skills that will later attribute to
their success in upper elementary
school. They are practicing multiple
math strategies using addition and
subtraction to gain a deeper number
sense. This allows them to explore
numbers and find what works for
them.
In reading, second grade students
recently completed a unit of re-
search. Students selected a research
topic at the beginning of the unit
and wrote their own books to share
the information they discovered
during the nine weeks. We learned
many new and exciting facts about
insects and arachnids! We are look-
ing forward to the remainder of our
school year with hope and promise!
Hillcrest Pride Kids
We are excited to announce our
January Hillcrest Pride Kids. They
are chosen by their teacher for dis-
playing good behavior and having
respect for others. Congratulations!

MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF RUSTON
Montessori gives update on concert, activities
Montessori School of Ruston
finished up 2020 strong. We put
together our first (and, we hope,
last!) All-Virtual Holiday Concert.
It featured all our students, from the
tiny toddlers to the big, strong eighth
graders, singing and playing an ar-
ray of instruments. One unexpected
perk of the new format was that it
allowed family members from out of
town to see their students perform.
While we hope to enjoy an in-person
concert for future Christmases, we
plan to continue filming and putting
the performances online for families
to share.
When the holiday break was up
and the new year had been rung in,
students returned to chilly weather
at school! We all really enjoyed the
unexpected snow day.
Back in class, our Early Childhood
teachers seized the opportunity to
talk about the seasons. Students
learned about Arctic animals such
as penguins and polar bears and
explored facts about bears including
hibernation and anatomy.
In Lower Elementary, students
focused on the calendar, the various
holidays coming up throughout the
year, and the phases of the moon.
They worked hard on their writing
skills, submitting original pieces to
the Louisiana Reading Association’s
Young Authors Contest. Last year,
MSR had two state winners — a sev-
enth grader and a first grader! We
are so proud of our students’ efforts.
In our Upper Elementary and
Middle School, students have been do-
ing some winter gardening projects,
growing cabbage, kale, and tomatoes
using an indoor heat lamp. It is so
rewarding to get to experience how
things grow firsthand. Montessori
curriculum values building strong
ties to nature, even when it’s not easy
to be outdoors!
Our higher grades have also
been concentrating on health, and
the class itself collectively decided
to start following Army Bootcamp
Training, including timing their
own one-mile runs! In other news,
the Upper Elementary and Middle
School took a field trip on foot to the
Louisiana Tech campus and prac-
ticed using their map reading skills.
Upcoming events include our an-
nual Homemade Market, right in
time for Valentine’s Day. This year,
the Market will be (like so many
other fun gatherings) online. We
will be posting Valentine goody bags
filled with goods made by each class.
These can be purchased for students
and their families. We will also be
offering larger items crafted and
donated by our talented MSR family
for bidding online; these may appeal
to a larger audience. Check them out
on our Facebook page on Feb. 10 and
11! All items purchased online may
be picked up for your Valentine in
front of the school.

Third grade news
Third grade mathematicians
have been continuing to improve on
learning their math facts! Students
also just finished Module 3 and will
begin learning about multiplica-
tion and finding the area of plane
figures. They are looking forward to
learning about fractions in Module 5!
In science, third graders have
just finished their second module
about survival. They are now start-
ing on their third module, Traits!
Third graders are wrapping up the
“Because of Winn Dixie” unit, a fun
and insightful story about true com-
panionship. Students have been ana-
lyzing how characters’ actions move
the story forward. They have done a
great job unpacking the theme of the
novel, which is developing unlikely
friendships in unexpected places.
In social studies, third graders have
completed the second unit about
how the first inhabitants, indigenous
people, and how Native Americans
influenced Louisiana’s culture.
Now they are studying Colonial
Louisiana.
Fourth grade news
Students are learning more and
more about the American Revolution!
They have explored the Patriots’ side
from many different points of view
and are now learning more about the
side of the Loyalists and the reasons
behind their choices. Students are
coming to understand even better
that there are two sides to everything
and every story! This will help stu-
dents to be successful at the end of
the month as they begin debating and
then planning opinion essays about
whether the Revolutionary War was
a war of treason or a war of freedom.
Students have started one of the
most important math units of this
school year: fractions! They are
learning how to draw fractions and
write them in number form. Stu-
dents have learned to decompose
into equivalent fractions using
the area model and tape diagrams.
In social studies, students have just
completed the Civil Rights unit.
Students participated in many great
discussions about how the civil
rights movement was a struggle for
social justice that took place mainly
during the 1950s and 1960s for Black
Americans to gain equal rights
under the law in the United States.
Students were intrigued by the
various videos seen from this era.
Students just finished the “Energy”
unit in science. Students enjoyed
making windmills using common
household items, powered by a gen-
erator that they made with magnets.
Students enjoyed trying their best
to build a powered windmill, and all
students had fun using the Scientific
Method as they investigated differ-
ent methods to get their windmill to
work. The next unit of study is about
“Senses”.
Fifth grade news
Ruston Elementary fifth grad-
ers are working hard and learning
lots! In math, students have started
Module 4. They are learning how
to multiply and divide fractions.
For ELA, students enjoyed a book
“tasting” last month, where they
explored new books! Each student
previewed five new books while sip-
ping on hot chocolate. Many students

RUSTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (continued)
found new series, authors, or
genres that they are excited
to read and explore. In their
ELA Guidebook unit, “The
Lion, the Witch, and the Ward-
robe,” students are identifying
the theme of this novel. Like
many fantasies, they have
determined the overall theme
is “Good vs. Evil.” In the next
few weeks, students will begin
the culminating writing task,
showing their understanding
of the unit by writing a scene
from a different point of view.
Student scientists have moved
on and started Module 3, in-
teractions of Earth’s systems.
In this module students will
be exploring Balinese rice
farming that has endured for
over 1,000 years! They will
learn how Earth’s systems
interact to make this possible.
In social studies, students
are comparing different colo-
nies. They are analyzing text
and images to determine
if those colonies were suc-
cessful and why. Students
have been focusing on the
geography, agriculture, gov-
ernment, and relationships
with the Native Americans.
Ruston Elementary School
fifth graders are also unbeliev-
ably proud of Avery Magee for
being selected as the Lincoln
Parish Elementary Student of
the Year. Avery was surprised
with her award during class
and was thrilled to be chosen.
When asked how she felt, Av-
ery replied “I did not think I
was going to win!” Classmates
clapped and cheered when
they found out Avery won.
Congratulations Avery! All
RES Lions are very proud for
Avery!
Other school news
Music class looks a little
different this school year. Al-
though students are not able to
sing or play wind instruments,
they have had fun building
skills in many other ways!
Students have built confidence
in reading rhythms, and have
had a blast learning several
body percussion routines.
Music class has also focused
on theory and note reading
skills, as well as famous com-
poser studies. Students have
learned to listen for different
forms and styles of music
through listening guides.
Research proves that getting
up and moving to music for
a while helps the brain work
better and often makes the day
a happier one!
Math news
In December, 74 of RES fifth
graders completed Mission 3
in Zearn. These students were
rewarded with a Bingo party to
celebrate. This week, the math
department will be celebrat-
ing the 70 third graders who
finished Mission 3 on Zearn.
In Xtra Math news, 42 stu-
dents earned a free dress day
for making 8 or more “greens”
during the month of Decem-
ber. All of these numbers con-
tinue to increase each month.
Research proves that students
who know their math facts are
able to more successfully solve
math problems. Keep up the
strong math work, students!
Way to go Lions!

RUSTON JUNIOR HIGH
The Science Department of Rus-
ton Junior High School recently set
up an Acurite 5-in-1 weather sensor
in conjunction with an upcoming
Open Sci-Ed curriculum unit. The
unit examines the weather, climate,
water cycling and has a major focus
on precipitation.
RJHS science teacher Kristina
Bourgeois set up the station so
students can monitor precipitation
amounts, temperature, relative hu-
midity, barometric pressure, and also
wind speed and direction. The Acu-
rite station is linked to the weather
application “Weather Underground”
and is discoverable on its app as the
La Mesa Station due to its close prox-
imity to the neighborhood.
Students will collect data from the
weather station and compare it to
various locations around the world.
They will also use the station to make
short term weather predictions in
conjunction with other activities
throughout the Open Sci-Ed cur-
riculum unit. RJHS plans to install
other weather stations in and around
Ruston for students to be able to moni-
tor the weather in our community.
