Leachable metals:
Metals that convert into soluble salts in aqueous media. An example of a leachable metal could be lead,
be lead, which can be leached out of a material if the material is wet or becomes sweaty. Many metals can

Cannot be present in materials or product above the lab reporting limit, and must not be intentionally

products – must meet chemical safety requirements that are specific to the products and their intended use and distribution.
Contact the Nike Chemistry team for detailed RSL requirements related to testing on food contact items and plastic materials intended for drinking water bottles, mouth guards, adhesive stickers for the skin, etc., since it is very specialized, and testing depends more on the material, user group, and function.

ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUPMENT For Electrical and electronic equipment
Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) components are defined as any component
dependent on electric current or electromagnetic fields to function properly.
All EEE components must meet limits of the Nike RSL for Electronics.
Both EEE testing and standard RSL testing are required in cases where electronics are
embedded into other products.
In the Nike RSL, electronics Restricted Substance with limits are for:
Metals in Battery or Button Cell (Mercury, Cadmium, Lead)
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Chromium(VI), PBDEs and PBBs)

Toys are defined as:
• Any product or material with no on-field play value intended for children
of less than 14 years of age.
• Testing requirements apply to products such as toys and electronics (and

INKS, PAINTS, PIGMENTS AND ADHESIVES Inks, Paints, Pigments, and adhesives are considered high risk for RSL
non-compliance
All inks samples must be cured and dried by the sample submitter, not at the laboratory. The lab must receive the sample in the cured, dry state
Material must be production ready, not R&D sample.
MUST be tested annually and receive RSL PASS result prior to use.
Must be retested every time a change is made to the color system formulation or on an annual basis, whichever comes first.

INKS, PAINTS, PIGMENTS AND ADHESIVES Each component of a color system — pigments, additives and
thinners — must pass RSL testing before use in any Nike product
Importantly, color system must be retested whenever a component of the formula changes.
Fully cured and dried following manufacturer guidelines. For screen printing inks, submit sample on a glass slide so the lab can scrape off the ink for testing.

SUBMISSION OF SCREEN PRINTING INKS Samples must be prepared at ink manufacture or screen printer in
accordance with technical recommendation or what is performed in production.
Laboratories are no longer allowed to perform the curing/drying process.
Pigment loading into base for RSL testing must exceed that which is utilized in production by a minimum of 10%, and can be no less than a 20% loading

SUBMISSION OF SCREEN PRINTING INKS Any additives used must also be added prior to the curing.
Ready to use (RTU) ink products should be applied as is and submitted for testing.
Submission of more than one pigment in a base (a composite ink sample) is not allowed by Nike.

APPROVED INK LIST Suppliers can utilize the Nike Approved Inks List, which
is available on Nike Connect.
Please contact your Nike LO for access if you are a Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier and do not know how to access it.
If a screen printer uses inks, paints and color systems from the approved list, they do not need to resubmit them for testing.
Screenprint strike-off testing still applies in all cases.

STRIKE-OFF TESTING
For screen prints, heat transfers and similar embellishments, the factory
must test strike-offs at a rate of 2% by style (not color). The selected 2%
must represent those production styles with the highest volume.
Please Note - strike-off testing is performed as a verification of production processes, there should be no ink failures at this point

STRIKE-OFF TESTING: TIERED APPROACH
• On submission and passing of all required strike-off tests over a one-year period, supplier will only have to test 1% of strike-offs moving forward.
• To achieve this, suppliers must provide number of strike-off tests performed which reflects:
o actual production volumes
o number of styles
o submit the list of passing test report IDs
• To request Tiering Verification Form, please contact [email protected]
• Maintain accurate records of test results for color system components and strike-offs.
• Nike and/or its Affiliates may request copies of these records at any time.

DIGITAL AND SUBLIMATION PRINTS Digital and sublimation prints must be tested once per year.
• The sample should be prepared by printing each color individually on an RSL-compliant fabric representative of production material. Make sure to print a sufficient amount for lab testing.
• The samples must be applied with production transfer paper and on production equipment.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING RSL SAMPLES Samples should be the same as those used in production.
Each sample must be 10 grams or more.
For inks, paints and adhesives – all samples must be sent in the cured state, following manufacturer guidance of actual production practices. Do not send uncured materials to the lab.
For all testing except metals, wrap aluminum foil securely around the sample.
Place each sample in a separate poly bag, seal, and label.
Complete all mandatory fields on the Test Request Form (TRF).

TEST ADMINISTRATIONPrior to production:

FAILURE RESOLUTION - PROCEDURE Vendors must ensure all shipped materials meet Nike RSL requirements.
If an item fails, Nike expects the supplier to conduct an investigation into the source of the failure
The failure resolution process includes submission of a Failure Resolution Form (FRF) for follow-up.
The FRF collects information to determine root cause as well as to create short- and long-term corrective action plans to help remediate issues.
Any affected materials/products must be quarantined and not shipped until receiving passing test results or substitution of RSL compliant material/product is completed.
