Our story…..
In the 2015 / 2016 rowing season the late Dudley Storey (NZ Olympian) and Keith Hibberd came together to start rowing at Howick College. In their first year with a team of five rowers competing in the National Regatta (MAADI) at Twizel they won a bronze medal in the under 18 novice race. In the 2016 / 2017 season growing to a team of 23 rowers, in the MAADI Cup Regatta our rowers made it into two A Finals and one B Final. We ended up with a Silver Medal in the Girls U16 Doubles; unfortunately our Boys A Final could not go ahead due to a crew member being admitted to hospital the day before. They had qualified with a real medal hope. Paula Storey, the late Dudley Storey’s widow is still very much involved with Howick rowing, regularly visiting at training camps and Karapiro regattas to provide inspirational speeches and chats to our crews. Following on from the successes of the last two seasons, our group of rowers has now grown from 5 to 35 rowers supported by four coaches and a parent committee. Our rowing team now requires funding to purchase a new pair / double boat, a new four boat and a new eight boat plus oars for each boat. We also need cox boxes and megaphones. The rowers are fundraising by holding car washes, raffles, golf days and other events and activities. The fee for each rower for the season is approximately $2,000 that covers our affiliation to Auckland Rowing Club, uniforms, travel and regattas. All money raised through sponsorship and fundraising goes directly to equipment that will ensure the growth and development of rowing at Howick College. On behalf of the Howick College Rowing team and the school, thank you for taking the time to consider our request. We look forward to receiving your response. Please contact us if you have any questions or require any further information.
