A Message From Fr. Len
Live the Present to prepare for the Future
On the first Sunday of Advent and the first day of December, the Gospel is telling us to be watchful, to be awake, to be alert and be prepared of Jesus coming. HE is referring to His public coming at the end of time, as well as his private coming for each one of us in our lives. And the best way to be prepared for that coming is always to be spiritually awake. And so, we are back to the importance of living in the present and meeting HIM already in the here and now. The best way to be prepared in the future is to live the present moment as best as we can. Advent is a time to open ourselves more and more to the action of God in our lives. For God is always there, trying to make us little by little, loving persons. That is His whole purpose in His dealing with us. (365 days with the Lord) Special thanks for all our volunteers for packing our Thanksgiving meals. We received generous donations from our parishioners including $ 2,000 worth of gift cards. Our special Thanks for those who make the Thanksgiving decorations on the altar. Lewin Farms donated the fruits and vegetables. Thanksgiving day is indeed a day to be thankful for God’s Blessing.

Thought for the Week
We will all have trials. There is no escaping them. Whether in the past, present, or future, we will all have to endure
some kind of trial. But through faith we are given the patience to endure them. We just have to keep our eyes focused
on Jesus, the “author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). He is our everything. He is our peace in the middle of any
storm. He lifts us up and gives us strength, and He loves us always.
On this first week of Advent, we await the birth of our Savior, who is there for us always, and brings us such joy!
What a wonderful God we have!
The Eucharist
Jesus gives us Himself entirely in the Eucharist. He can change our lives as we receive Him faithfully.
As we approach the altar, we do it reverently—in awe of The Precious One we are about to receive.
Words from Pope Francis
“Advent increases our hope, a hope which does not disappoint.
The Lord never lets us down.”
Respect Life Prayer
Lord, please help us always to defend all life,
and help us to do it with “gentleness and respect”.(1 Peter 3:15)
A Scripture to Ponder…
“But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.”
(Matthew 24:13)
Our Memorial Mass
Our annual memorial Mass, which was celebrated on November 13, was a wonderful
remembrance of our loved ones who are now in the loving embrace of the Lord. As always,
the liturgy was inspiring, and the addition this year of candles brought forth by the families
was so moving. As each loved one’s name was read, the family placed a candle on the table
at the foot of the altar. After this, Father Len asked anyone who would like to light a candle
in memory of a loved one to come forward. So many came forward in reverence.

Registration for our 2019-20 Faith Formation year for Levels 1 through 8 continues. If you missed any of the
times offered during June and throughout the summer, it is certainly never too late. Please e-mail or call the
Faith Formation Office for available times to register this week. Registrations will also still be taken every
Sunday immediately following our 9:30 Mass. Children entering first grade in the fall should be
registered now to begin the two year preparation for the reception of Reconciliation and the
Eucharist. We are always happy to welcome back our returning families and to welcome any newcomers.
Upon registering, families will be provided with details concerning our online registration fee payment. Children continue with each
level, growing in their faith and love of the Lord. The schedule for our Faith Formation classes is very family friendly, offering both
afternoon and evening times for each level. We are always happy to hear from any families who would like to find out more about our
parish offerings which enable the children, teens, parents and grandparents opportunities to increase their faith and grow closer to
the Lord. We offer weekly formation for children and teens, a Liturgy of the Word for children at our 9:30 Sunday Mass year round,
preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation, a summer Vacation Bible Camp, a
Youth Group and Youth Masses followed by get-togethers for seventh through twelfth graders, service opportunities for our young
people, discussion and sharing for parents and grandparents and seasonal events for the entire parish. If your child has any special
needs at all we will work with you to provide the very best learning environment. We are also happy to welcome any families with
children who may have been delayed in receiving the sacraments. You are invited to call or e-mail the Faith Formation Office to dis-
cover the many ways your family can be involved, or to register your children for our classes.
As we strive to keep our Faith Formation class schedule family friendly, we continually seek new volunteers to assist us in doing so. If
you feel you may be called to be a Catechist for the children and teens, would like to assist in a class or would be willing to be a door
monitor, please contact the Faith Formation Office to discuss the possibility. We will keep in our prayers all those who may be consid-
ering this opportunity to truly make a difference in our young people’s lives. We welcome parishioners of every age group to the cate-
chetical ministry. Initial and ongoing formation, as well as continued support, is provided.
Gatherings for Levels 3 through 6 parents are being held on Wednesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. and Friday December 6 at 10 a.m.
The parents of children in these levels are asked to choose the day and time which works best for their families’ schedules. These
times together offer the opportunity for parents to share with one another, and to increase their own knowledge of the Catholic faith
through our discussions. As the primary religious educators of their children, this enables the parents to engage in conversation with
their children about what it means to be a Catholic in today’s world.
Faith Formation classes will not be held on Monday, December 9 since we will be closed for the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Although December 8 is when we normally celebrate this important Holy Day, if it falls on a Sunday the feast is transferred to the
Monday. On this day we especially remember how Mary was conceived without any original sin, especially chosen to be the Mother
of God. May we always look to our Blessed Mother as our model in saying yes to the will of God in our own lives. The Catechists
always provide explanations to the children and teens in our formation classes on the various Holy Days, feast days and seasons in
our Liturgical Year.

SAINT MARK’S YOUTH MINISTRY
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN
7TH THROUGH 12TH GRADES
FAITH FORMATION
DIRECTOR
MRS. LYNN FEIN
631 821-0550 OR
Our Youth group meets from 7 to 8:30 on Monday nights in our parish center. All those who are currently in seventh through twelfth grades are invited to join us and to bring a friend. We also ask all of our pa-rishioners to spread the word about our youth group, and to encour-age the participation of any young people you may know. Our fall gatherings include the following upcoming dates: December 2 and 16. In January we will gather on the 6th, 13th and 27th, skipping the 20th, as we celebrate the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our plans this year include discussions relevant to our Catholic faith, with related activities and games. We will also continue engaging in service projects for our parish, community and Haiti. Many parents have requested specific dates when we will be partici-pating in special projects. We will be continuing to decorate the ban-ners for the people of Haiti on Monday, December 1. We will not be meeting December 9 as we celebrate the Immaculate Conception which is transferred to the Monday this year. On December 16 we will be making gingerbread houses which the young people will present to those in any kind of need this Christmas season. Our praying together and sharing of our faith, of course is truly enhanced by our participation in weekly Eucharist. We also enjoy refreshments each week, and invite our group members to bring a snack to share. Our thanks are extended to Dawn Tannenbaum, whose son Luke joins us weekly, for donating 2 large cases of water and iced tea for our re-freshment table. We also so greatly appreciate Dawn’s praise of our Youth Ministry and for encouraging other families. Our group is con-tinuing to grow due to our parishioners’ prayers and through our Catechists and parents relating the many benefits of being a member of the group. Please be sure to save the date for our next Youth Mass, here at St. Mark’s. It is being held on Saturday, December 21 at 5 p.m., followed by a get-together in the parish center with refreshments which in-cludes pizza. Our volunteers and teens are already planning special activities for the young people and their families. The Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry is sponsoring “An Ignite Con-ference” on Saturday January 4, 2020 from 9:30 to 2:30 at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip. It is a day intended for all adults concerned and passionate about evangelizing the youth of Long Island and leading them back to Christ and the Church. It is not just for those who specifically minister to youth, but for all Bap-tized Catholics as we share in the call to be missionaries for Christ. Priests, Religious, Catechetical Leaders, Catechists, Teachers, Coaches, Parents and Grandparents are all included. For more infor-mation about registering for this special day, please contact our Faith Formation Office.

St. Mark’s “Giving Tree”
“Do not be afraid. Listen, I bring you news of great joy,
a joy to be shared by the whole people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;
He is Christ the Lord.”
(Luke 2:10-11)
Our “Giving Tree” has been a tradition at St. Mark’s for many years. Many
Christmas mornings have been brightened because of the love and generosity of
our parishioners. Thank you for taking a tag from the tree and providing a gift for
a very thankful child or adult. If you can’t give a tangible gift, remember that the
most wonderful gift you can give is your gift of prayer.
At times we might think that what we give is not enough, but God sees our
hearts, and He loves the cheerful giver. We never know the effect of one act of
kindness!
Thanks to all of you who make the message of the Christmas Season come alive to so
many, year after year.
May the Good Lord bless the cheerful givers at St. Mark’s!
In His Love,
Jane & Volunteers
Please remember to attach the tag to your unwrapped gift, and return all gifts to the Parish Center by December 8.
Our families will be coming in to receive
your gifts on Wednesday, December 11.
Have a Blessed Christmas!
