Roaster Respondents

Café Pulse is an independent research company providing a unique resource for Australian retailers, businesses & industry suppliers, whether that is in the Independent Grocery, Cafe Channels and/or across many small businesses in general.

In consultation with a café owners panel, the inaugural Café Pulse survey (September 2010), an idea to improve Café Industry service satisfaction was developed to address real issues in the café market. We then received over 357 completed Café Pulse surveys, representing over 600 individual cafés. This enabled us to collect valuable industry statistics, information and café supplier performance measurements.

Café Pulse is the only survey of its kind published in the café industry. We listen, and you, our valued Coffee Roaster community, have the opportunity to have your say and be heard. Café Pulse, as part of its commitment to the Café Industry has shared the information gathered in various Café Culture issues over the last 3 years.

As part of the launch of the annual Compak Golden Bean Coffee Roaster survey, we are pleased to announce that these collective answers have been combined into Golden Bean Roasters Report and we trust you will find this vital coffee roaster information beneficial to your business and that it assists you in your daily coffee business to best understand servicing the café industry and the trends occurring within it.

For those that missed the full results seminar at the Compak Golden Bean 2014 then here are the summary results.

We have also created an exciting “What shapes our Australian ooH Coffee Market” report 2014 which is now available.

Key Insights from this Golden Bean survey

Now in our exciting third year.

Most coffee roasters are very bullish regarding their overall business growth again this year, with +59% now trading at +10% PA. being up on last year’s collective and reported growth numbers.

• Most started roasting as a natural progression from being a barista in cafés and more importantly, their own passion for coffee. We are now seeing the trend of micro (sample) roasting reaching +15% in house levels nationally across all cafés for mostly point of difference “Single Origin specialty coffee and small batch roasting required on demand”.

• Roasted bean prices are relatively static, with last year’s reported prices at invoice level between the $25-$29 ranges – higher for organic and other specialty coffees.

• We continue to see a +50% of all respondent roasters focus all their sales and marketing effort on just ONE brand vs. complex multiple level brand strategies that tend to be more costly and less effective than single brand strategies and support.

• This year, the roasters’ main concern is “Cafe & Wholesaler customers”, while others quote “Competition” by other roasters and that of the quality and effectiveness of their own company sales reps and office selling staff.

• What is important to roasters is product knowledge, improved production techniques, and improved sales and marketing knowledge.
