a=b=6.2850(l)Ä, c=8.794(2) Ä) stellt einen neuen Strukturtyp dar. Ungewöhnlich an
Raumgruppe: P4332, a=16.202(2)A). Die Verbindung kristallisiert im Strukturtyp der
Zintl-Phase Ba6ln4Ge2i und besteht aus flächenverknüpften pentagonalen
Dodekaedern.
a=16.300(2)A).
Pm3 n, a=12.020(l)A) nachgewiesen werden. Die kubische Elementarzelle ist in allen
11
drei Richtungen verdoppelt (a=24.067(3)Ä).
a=b=7.253(2)Ä, c=5.496(2)Ä, y=120°) isoliert werden.
(Pearsonsymbol: hP5; Raumgruppe: P6/mmm, a=b=5.357(l)Ä, c=7.065(l)A,
(Pearsonsymbol: oP16, Raumgruppe: Pbcm, a=6.712(l)A, b=13.374(l)A,
KBi2 (Pearsonsymbol: cF24, Raumgruppe: Fd3m, a=9.497(2)Ä) kristallisiert im
IV
Von Mg2Pb (Pearsonsymbol: cF12, Raumgruppe: Fm3m, a=6.796(2)Ä) war noch
keine Einkristallstrukturanalyse bekannt.
[18Krone6 K]+ CF3SO3" ( Raumgruppe P2,/c, a=8.665Ä, b=16.630Ä, c=14.314Ä,
ß=95.43°) als ein Produkt nachgewiesen werden. Im Festkörper-NMR können
Trialkylsilylreste nachgwiesen werden. CsSi reagiert nicht mit Trialkylsilyltriflaten
allein.
reagieren.
reagieren.

Abstract
The work presented here Covers investigations and characterizations of binary phases
in the M/Sn System (M=Na, K, Ba) as well as in the M/Pb System (M=K, Mg).
Additionally ternary phases in the K/Bi/Sn, Ba/X/Sn (X=Sr, Y, Bi) and K/Bi/Pb
Systems were investigated. Experiments were made to document and discuss the
influence of the electropositive elements on the electronegative ones and on the
structures built.
In the phase system Na/Sn a new phase of the composition NaSn5 could be obtained.
The Compound (Pearson symbol: tP12, space group: P42]m, a=b=6.2850(l)A,
c=8.794(2)Ä) crystallizes in a new structure type. The structure consists of an unusual
almost planar quadratic net of Sn atoms. Above and below the net fragments of
pentagonal dodecahedra are present. All tin atoms have five or fourfold coordination.
Therefore NaSns cannot be regarded as a Zintl phase.
In the phase system of K/Sn K6Sn25 could be isolated (Pearson symbol: cP124, space
group: P4332, a=16.202(2)Ä). The Compound crystallizes in the structure of
Ba6lri4Ge2i and consists of face sharing pentagonal dodecahedra. The cations are
found inside the dodecehdra and in Channels, which are created by the dodecahedral
network. A Compound of the composition K7.4Sn25 was described earlier. But IQS^s
was reinvestigated because the electron count for a correct Zintl phase was not clear.
The number of electrons for KöSn25 is too low and cannot be altered since there is no
additional space in the structure for more cations.
Doping the structure with Bi compensates for the missing electrons and K6Bi2Sn23 is
obtained (Pearson symbol: cP124, space group: P4332, a=16.277(2)Ä). This
Compound crystallizes in the structure of BaJn4Ge2i as well and can be described as a
Zintl phase.
A superstructure was found in KgSn^ (space group: Pm3n, a=12.016(l)Ä ). The
cubic unit cell is doubled in each direction (a=24.067(3)Ä) leading to a threefold
superstructure. No satisfying structure model could be obtained.
In the Ba/Sn system BaSn3 could be isolated (Pearson symbol: hP6, space group:
P63/mmc, a=b=7.253(2)Ä, c=5.496(2)Ä, y=120°). The Compound is already known,
but was reinvestigated because of its interesting structure and properties. BaSn3
crystallizes in the structure of Ni3Sn. The structure is characterized by a chain of
VI
fused octahedra. In between the octahedral chains the Ba atoms can be found. EH and
LMTO investigations show that BaSn3 is at the borderline of Zintl phases and
intermetallic phases. Magnetometric investigations show that BaSn3 becomes a
superconductor at TC=3.7K. Resistivity measurements reveal the metallic character of
the Compound.
BaSns is a second Compound obtained in the Ba/Sn system (Pearson symbol: hP5;
space group: P6/mmm, a=b=5.357(l)Ä, c=7.065(l)Ä, y=120°). The Compound
represents a new structure type. In this structure a double layer of tin atoms can be
found building hexagonal networks. The resulting hexagonal prisms are centered by
tin atoms. The Ba atoms can be found between two double layers.
The change of the structural and magnetic behavior of BaSn3 was investigated by
exchanging Ba for Sr. It was found that up to 50% Ba can be exchanged for Sr before
the structure type changes. Up to this point the unit cell contracts in the a and b
direction whereas the c axis is almost not affected. The magnetic properties show a
more heterogeneous behavior. The critical temperature becomes smaller with higher
Sr content. The analysis of the band structure indicates that the critical temperature
will change if the distance between the octahedral chains is altered.
The structural behavior due to the exchange of Ba for Y was investigated as well. The
structure type changes at a content of 20% Y. The same result can be seen if Sn is
exchanged for Bi.
In the phase system ofK/Pb two new Compounds could be isolated:
K5pb24 (Pearson symbol: cI58, space group: 143m, a=12.358(l)A) is the third
intermetallic Compound which consists solely out of main group metals and
crystallizes in the a-Mn structure type. The structure can be rationalized by using
Frank-Kaspar and Friauf polyhedra. The Friauf polyhedra are centered by a K atom
and consist of 2 Pb atoms and 4 K-atoms. The Frank-Kaspar polyhedra are centered
by a K atom and consist of Pb atoms and one K atom. Magnetometric measurements
show that the Compound is a superconductor (TC=7.0K).
The second phase found in the system K/Pb is K^Pbs (Pearson symbol: oP16v space
group: Pbcm, a=6.712(l)Ä, b=13.374(l)Ä, c=6.512(l)Ä). It crystallizes in the
structure typ of AlDy, with one Pb-position not fully occupied. The most interesting
feature of the Compound is the folded zig zag chain out of Pb atoms. The Compound
cannot be obtained by fusing stochiometric amounts of the elements but an excess of
Vll
Pb is needed. The phase can be described as a Zintl phase if a heavily distorted
coordination polyhedron ofPb is tolerated.
KBi2 (Pearson symbol: cF24, space group: Fd3m, a=9.497(2)Ä)crystallizes in the
structure of MgCu2 and belongs to the class of Laves phases. The Bi atoms build a
framework of Vertex sharing tetrahedra. Between the tetrahedra large caverns can be
found which hold the K atoms. Magnetometric measurements show that the
Compound is a superconductor.
KBi2 was synthesized as a control experiment for K[Pb,Bi]2 (Pearson symbol: cF24,
space group: F43m, a=9.555(l)A), since it is impossible to differentiate between Bi
and Pb by means of X-rays. The phase crystallizes in the AuBes structure and can be
regarded as a distorted Laves phase. The asymmetrical unit consists of three sites
instead of two sites as in KBi2. As a consequence the tetrahedra have different sizes.
No Single crystal structure determination was known for Mg2Pb (Pearson symbol:
cF12, space group: Fm3m, a=6.796(2)Ä) no Single crystal analysis was known. The
Compound crystallizes in the antifluorite type.
Another part the work describes the behaviour the behaviour of silicides and stannides
towards strong complexing and sylilating agents. Preformed Clusters in the solid State
should be extruded from their structural framework and chemically altered.
The reaction of KSi with trialkyltriflates or crownethers showed no results. But the
combination of both gave a new siliconfree Compound [18crown6 K]+ CF3SO3' (
space group P2i/c, a=8.665Ä, b=16.630Ä, c=14.314Ä, ß=95.43°). The missing
trialkyl groups could be detected in the solid State NMR. CsSi reacts vigorously with
trialkyltriflates and crownethers and was not investigated any further. In the reaction
of cold K/Sn melts mit molten 18crown6 a red product was obtained which can be
dissolved im ethylendiamine. Interstingely cristalline educts stay cristalline after they
reacted with molten crown ether. Obviously only amorphous parts are dissolved.
