What agencies in the Conceptual Framework are involved with this quote?
“The Australian Impressionists created works which depicted Australians as heroic, strong, rugged figures. These images were very popular in Australia and back in England…”
Tom Roberts, Shearing the Rams, 1890
“Rosalie Gascoigne goes out into the bush and scrounges old waste materials to create her work. As a young woman she found many people thought she should be at home cleaning the house. They were unimpressed with what she was doing and the works she created, but she found a beauty in the materials; she feels they reflect Australia.”

HSC CASE STUDY 1:MODERNISM
Paris Street, Windy Day, Caillebotte 1877
Modernism is a cultural/social trend, occurring within the ‘Modern era’
Modernism affected all of society because it was a time of monumental CHANGE.
We will be focussing on Modernism in art, (also called Modernist Art or Modern Art.) Within the period of Modernism in art there were many movements. A ‘movement’ is a specific style or field of interest within a group of artists who more or less agree. A movement may last for months or years.(e.g. Fauvism)
Derain, Forest at Martigues, 1908-9
The Modern era…what was it?• Some writers locate the Modern era from the
period of The Enlightenment (‘The Age of Reason’) which began in 18th century. This was a general increase in scientific thought and philosophy and a move away from superstition. It was also the start of the lessening of the influence of the Christian Church. There was a sense that human reason, technology and knowledge was the basis for all truth. Technology was seen as being able to cure all the problems of the world.
Ideas about Democracy strengthened. The movement towards abolition of Slavery began during this period.
The first Encyclopedia developed in France, with the aim of collating and spreading knowledge, in mid 1700sThe Industrial Revolution started in England at this time and spread to Europe. The French Revolution occurred 1789. The American Revolution occurred 1775.
TWO WORDS: ENORMOUS CHANGE• Everything about life in the Modern era underwent change,
and the pace accelerated as time went on.• Railroads• Steamships• Cars• Aircraft• New forms of steel manufacture allowed new building
methods.• Discovery of electricity in 19th cent• Communication across the world by telegraph 19th century• Changes in the way people worked; where they lived
The Modernist period in Art is generally regarded as second half of 19th century to the 1960s. This is the period we will be concentrating on.
Brancusi, The Kiss, c. 1908
Modernism is the main place one finds rapidly changing Movements, because it was a time of such change, and artists’ ideas changed, as well as their audience.
