A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down
begged him and said, “If you wish, you
can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his
hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do
will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him
immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him
at once. He said to him, “See that you tell
no one anything, but go, show yourself to
the priest and offer for your cleansing what
Moses prescribed; that will be proof for
them.”
The man went away and began to publicize
the whole matter. He spread the report
abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to
enter a town openly. He remained outside in
deserted places, and people kept coming to
him from everywhere.

Parish Theme 2017-2018: Living as Missionary Disciples - “What the Lord has done for me!”
When God heals you, you have to tell somebody.
There’s just something about joy. It can’t be hidden. And
people notice when you’ve been changed.
That said, there are perplexities about this part of the
Gospel. For, as the text says, Jesus “sternly warns him”
not to tell a soul other than the priest. That this (and
other passages wherein the Lord issues similar com-
mands) is puzzling is an understatement. And yet the
reason is supplied: Jesus did not want His mission turned into a circus act at
which people gathered to watch miracles and see “signs and wonders.”
But commands to remain silent cannot remain true for us who [understand
Jesus’ command]: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very
end of the age (Matt 28:19).
Hence it is clear that we NEED to shout what the Lord has done for us and
give Him all the glory. And when God acts in your life, there is joy, and joy can-
not be hidden or suppressed. If our healing is real, we can’t stay silent. To quote
Jesus at a later time (when the Temple leaders told him to silence his disci-
ples), I tell you, if they keep quiet, the very rocks will cry out (Lk 19:40).
At the heart of evangelization is announcing what the Lord has done for us. An
old Gospel song says, “I thought I wasn’t gonna testify … but I couldn’t keep it
to myself, what the Lord has done for me!” Yes, tell somebody what the Lord
has done. If the healing is real, you can’t keep silent.

Regulations for Lenten Fast and Abstinence
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer
are the three traditional disci-
plines of Lent. The faithful
and catechumens should un-
dertake these practices seri-
ously in a spirit of penance
and of preparation for Bap-
tism or of the renewal of
Baptism at Easter.
Fasting is to be observed on
Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet
celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is
allowed and no meat is to be taken. Two other meatless
meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken accord-
ing to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted,
but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On
days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when
health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the
law of fast and abstinence does not oblige. Ash Wednesday,
all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are the days of ab-
stinence from meat.
February 11, 2018—The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Eucharistic Adoration
All are welcome to come to the convent chapel on
Thursdays any time from 6:00-7:30pm to pray and
spend time with our Lord.
Q & A
Q. Every year during Lent I'm asked why Catholics fast and abstain. How can I explain our Lenten practice?
A. Explain that Lent is the 40 days before Easter in which Catholics pray, fast, contemplate, and engage in acts of spiritual self
-discipline. Catholics do these things because Easter, which celebrates the Resurrection of Christ, is the greatest holy day of
the Christian year (even above Christmas) and Catholics have recognized that it is appropriate to prepare for such a holy day
by engaging in such disciplines.
Lent bears particular relationship to the 40 days Christ spent fasting in the desert before entering into his public ministry.
Catholics imitate Christ by spending 40 days in spiritual discipline before the celebration of Christ's triumph over sin and
death.
Fasting is a biblical discipline that can be defended from both the Old and the New Testament. Christ expected his disciples
to fast (Mt 9:14-15) and issued instructions for how they should do so (Mt 6:16-18). Catholics follow this pattern by holding a
partial fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Abstinence from certain foods is also a biblical discipline. Catholics commemorate Christ's Crucifixion on a Friday, by abstain-
ing from eating meat on that day of the week during Lent. The only flesh they eat on Friday is fish, which is a symbol of
Christ.
Even the Ash Wednesday practice of having one's forehead signed with ashes has a biblical parallel. Putting ashes on one's
head was a common biblical expression of mourning. By having the sign of the cross made with ashes on their foreheads,
Catholics mourn Christ's suffering on the cross and their own sins, which made that suffering necessary.

FY2018 Six Month Financial Statement
The parish realized operating income of $641,925
against operating expenses of $591,862 for a net oper-
ating surplus of $50,063 for the six months ending on
December 31, 2017. From that operating surplus, we
paid an additional $12,000 against our outstanding
Cathedraticum debt to the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Part of the surplus was due to minor spending for
snow removal or salting operations, and continuous
efforts to control operating spending. As of February,
2018, our outstanding Cathedraticum debt to the
Archdiocese has been reduced to $12,102.
We had other income of $50,980 for the six months.
Our other income came from the Archdiocesan Capi-
tal Campaign, the 2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal,
and donations given for specific projects. We had
other expenses of $62,897 for the six months. The
other expenses included the new Church sound sys-
tem, the new Church altar railings, installation of LED
lighting to parish parking lots, development costs of
the new parish master plan, and contributions to St.
Benedict Church in Baltimore. Our net other income
had a deficit of $11,917 that reduced our overall sur-
plus to $38,146 for the first six months of FY2018.
A copy of the financial report may be found on the
back tables in Church or on our website. As always,
we thank you for your continuing financial support of
our parish.

Wisdom from Our Holy Father
A life of faith means wanting to be with the Lord, and that
means constantly searching for Him wherever He is.

Mass Tips for Catholic Families
As Catholics, we know that the Eucharist is the source and
summit of our faith, and Mass is really the pinnacle experi-
ence of Catholic culture that we engage in every week as a
family.
So here are some strategies for making the most of Mass as
a family:
1. If you have little ones, explain the Mass to them as it
progresses. For older children and adults, learn about
the Mass at home. Little children like to have the Mass
narrated to them, so they can feel like they are “in the
know” with what’s happening (“Now we are going to
listen to stories
from the Bible.”
“Now you are go-
ing to go receive a
blessing from the
priest, while I re-
ceive Jesus in the
Eucharist!”). For
older children and
adults, learning
about the parts of
the Mass and their
Scriptural roots makes the celebration of the Mass
even more meaningful and engaging.
2. Participate! Sing the hymns, pray the vocal prayers – be
engaged! Show your family through your participation
how you want to be at Mass, and they will more likely
follow your example.

Top Reasons to Oppose Assisted Suicide
The deadly and dangerous practice of assisted suicide is now
legal in five states (Oregon, Washington, Vermont, California,
and Colorado) and the District of Columbia, our nation's capi-
tal. With new momentum and lots of money, assisted suicide
proponents are pursuing an aggressive nationwide campaign to
advance their agenda through legislation, ballot measures, litiga-
tion, and public advertising, targeting states they see as most
susceptible to their message.
Some polls indicate that the public is receptive to the general
concept of assisted suicide. But the same polls show that when
the public learns about the dangers of assisted suicide, espe-
cially for those who are poor, elderly, disabled, or without
access to good medical care, their views shift against the prac-
tice. The following dangers are among the top reasons to op-
pose assisted suicide.
A Deadly Mix with Our Profit-Driven Health Care Sys-
tem: Some patients in Oregon and California have received
word that their health insurance will pay for assisted suicide
but will not pay for treatment that may sustain their lives.
Puts Vulnerable Persons at Risk of Abuse and Coer-
cion: Once lethal drugs have been prescribed, assisted suicide
laws have no requirements for assessing the patient's consent,
competency, or voluntariness. Who would know if the drugs
are freely taken since there is no supervision or tracking of the
drugs once they leave the pharmacy and no witnesses are re-
quired at the time of death? Despite a reporting system de-
signed to conceal rather than detect abuses, reports of undue
influence have nonetheless surfaced in Oregon.
Assisted suicide laws often allow one of the two witnesses to
the request for lethal drugs to be an heir to the patient's es-
tate. Therefore, an heir or friends of the heir can encourage or
pressure the patient to request lethal drugs and then be a wit-
ness to the request. (continued next week)

Rice bowls will be collected April 7th and 8th. Please send checks or cash, no change.
**Stay tuned for our rice bowl wrap up. Details to follow**
Meet eight-year-old Majd and his friend. His family was forced
to leave their home in Bahzani by ISIS forces. He attends a CRS
sponsored school. Since January 2014, violence in northern
and central Iraq has forced more than 3 million Iraqis
including religious and ethnic minorities like Christians, Sunni
Muslims, Yazidis, and Turkmen from their homes. It’s
estimated that 1.2 million displaced Iraqi children living
outside official camps in northern Iraq remain unable to attain
quality public basic education.
Barriers to education include inadequate infrastructures; overcrowding; differences in curriculum; and
personnel with limited training on psychosocial support. To meet the needs of so many displaced
children, in 2014 CRS established seven Child Friendly Spaces in Dohuk and Ninewa governorates in
northern Iraq to provide psychosocial support and a safe space for children to go where they could re-
establish a sense of normalcy. A year later, CRS transformed these Child Friendly Spaces into Child
Support Centers, where they became temporary learning spaces that incorporated basic numeracy and
literacy while maintaining a supportive psychosocial environment.
Over the course of CRS' work in Iraq, CRS learned that parents prefer formal education over non-formal
learning activities. Accordingly, CRS transformed the Child Support Centers into classrooms recognized
by the Departments of Education (DoE) of Ninewa and Dohuk.
To date, the CRS education program has served more than 6,300 IDP students grades 1-6.
