What do reneWabLe energy engineers do?Renewable energy engineering is concerned with the generation or use of energy by sustainable methods such as biomass, energy efficiency, photovoltaics, solar architecture, solar thermal, and wind.
career opportunitiesYou could work in any renewable energy
engineering field such as manufacturing, quality
control and reliability, computer-aided design of
devices and systems, research and education,
system design and analysis, balance of system
areas, fault diagnosis and modelling, consultancy,
policy formation and planning, or on projects in
developing countries.
“UNSW is one of the few universities in Australia offering an undergraduate program in Renewable Energy Engineering. Renewable energy research is at the forefront of innovation. At its heart are engineers using new technology and ideas to solve a big problem for which there is no clear answer. We not only need to develop these technologies, but also to understand the way society interacts with them and how to commercialise them.”
reneWabLe energy engineering Renewable energy engineering encompasses a
wide range of renewable energy technologies and
their use. It draws together resources from around
UNSW into a coherent degree supporting learning
for this growth industry. Study areas include
renewable energy technologies, systems and
applications including biomass, complementary
technologies, environmental and policy issues, solar
architecture, solar thermal systems, photovoltaics
and wind generators.

schooL of photovoLtaic and reneWabLe energy engineeringThe School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy
Engineering is internationally recognised for
research in the area of photovoltaics. However,
it doesn’t stop there. Our renewable energy
engineering interests extend to biomass, wind
energy, tidal power generation and sustainable use
of conventional electricity.
Our students live what they do in the purpose-built
Tyree Energy Technologies Building – a space
where renewable energy engineering research,
education and industry work together to develop
and implement sustainable energy technologies.
About half of what you study in this degree is common with
the photovoltaics and solar energy degree, but renewable
energy engineering looks beyond the sun as a source of
energy, encompassing a wider range of technologies and
their uses. It also addresses the important areas of solar
architecture and the design of energy efficient buildings
and appliances.

industriaL experienceWe love to produce graduates who are ready to hit the
ground running, so we make it a compulsory part of their
degree to complete at least 60 days of approved industrial
experience. Students need to find their own industrial training
places and they can do it within Australia or overseas.
professionaL recognitionThe BE (Hons) in Renewable Energy Engineering is fully
accredited by Engineers Australia, the professional body for
engineering in Australia.
