ZONES OF THE POKMON TCG
Active PokmonThe top row of a players in-play section is for the Active Pokmon. Each
player starts with (and must always have) one Active Pokmon. Each
player may only have one Active Pokmon at a time. If your opponent
doesnt have any more Pokmon in play, you win the game!
BenchThe bottom row of a players in-play section is for the Benched Pokmon.
Each player may have up to 5 Pokmon on the Bench at any one time.
Any Pokmon in play other than the Active Pokmon must be put on
the Bench.

beginning of the game and keeps
his or her own hand hidden.
Cards you draw go into your hand.
Players may not look at their
opponents hand unless a card is
played that allows otherwise.

Prize CardsEach player has his or her own
Prize cards. Prize cards are 6 cards
that each player sets aside, face
down, from his or her own deck
at the beginning of the game.
These cards are chosen randomly,
and neither player should know
what cards his or her Prize cards
are at the beginning of the game.
When you Knock Out an opposing
Pokmon, you take one of your
Prize cards. This is put into your
hand and then played n ormally.
If youre the first one to take your
last Prize card, you win!
Discard PileEach player has his or her
discard pile. Cards taken o
of play go to the discard p
unless a card is played tha
otherwise. Typically when
Pokmon is Knocked Out,
any cards attached to it (s
as Energy cards) are sent

In PlayThe in-play zone is shared by
the players. Each player has two

Put Basic Pokmon cards from your hand onto your Bench (as many as you want).

Evolution notes:Neither player can evolve a Pokmon on its first turn in play. When you evolve a Pokmon,
it means that Pokmon is new in play, so you cant evolve it a second time the same turn! You can evolve either
your Active or Benched Pokmon. Finally, neither player can evolve a Pokmon on his or her first turn!
Example:The Bisharp card in Timmys hand reads, Evolves from
Pawniard, and Timmy has a Pawniard in play. He may play the
Bisharp card on top of the Pawniard card, keeping any damage
counters and clearing all other effects.
Pokmon Trading Card Game Rul
Evolve Pokmon (as many as you want). If you have a card in your hand that says Evolves from so-and-soand so-and-so is the name of a Pokmon you had in play at thebeginning of your turn, you may play that card in your hand on top
of Pokmon so-and-so. This is called evolving a Pokmon.
You may evolve a Basic Pokmon to a Stage 1 Pokmon or a Stage
1 Pokmon to a Stage 2 Pokmon. When a Pokmon evolves, itkeeps all cards attached to it (Energy cards, Evolution cards, etc.)and keeps any damage it already has, but it cant use the attacksand Abilities of the Pokmon from which it evolved. Special
Conditions on the Pokmonsuch as Asleep, Confused, orPoisonedalso end when it evolves.
Attach an Energy card to one of your Pokmon(once per turn).
Take 1 Energy card from your hand and put it under either yourActive Pokmon or one of your Benched Pokmon. You can attach
Energy just once each turn!

Remember, Abilities arent attacks, so you can still attack if you use an Ability! You can use Abilities from both yourActive and Benched Pokmon.
Pokmon Trading Card Game Rul
Play Trainer cards.
When you play any Trainer card, do what it says and obey the rule atthe bottom of the card, and then put it in the discard pile. You can play
as many Item cards as you like. Supporter cards are played like Itemcards, but you can play only one Supporter card each turn. Stadium cardsstay in play until another card removes them, but you can play only oneStadium card each turn.
Retreat your Active Pokmon (once per turn).
On most turns, you probably will not retreat, but if your ActivePokmon has lots of damage counters on it, you might want to retreatit and bring out a Pokmon from your Bench to fight instead. You may
also want to do this if you have a strong Pokmon on the Bench ready
to battle!
To retreat, you must discard 1 Energy from your Active Pokmon foreach listed in its Retreat Cost. If no are listed, it retreats for free. Then, you switch that retreating Pokmon with a Pokmon from your
Bench. Keep all damage counters and all attached cards with eachPokmon when they switch. Asleep or Paralyzed Pokmon cannot retreat.
When your Active Pokmon goes to your Bench (whether it retreatedor got there some other way), some things do go awaySpecialConditions and any effects from attacks.
If you retreat, you can still attack that turn with your new Active Pokmon.
Use Abilities (as many as you want). Some Pokmon have special Abilities they can use. Many of them can beused before you attack. Each Ability is different, though, so read carefullyto see how each one works. Some work only if a condition is met, while
others work all the time even without you using them. Be sure to announcewhich Abilities you are using so your opponent knows what youre doing.

You may see some attacks with this as
their cost symbol. That means the attack
has a cost of 0, and you can use it without
any Energy attached to the Pokmon!
What Energy would you need to use
Delphoxs Fire Blast? Thats right, 1
Energy and 3 Energy of any type!
This attack is called Vine Whip
Chespin needs 1 Energy attached
to use this attack
Chespin needs 2 Energy attachedto use Seed Bomb: 1 Energy
and 1 of any type of Energy
This attack is called Seed Bomb
Vine Whip does 10 damage to
your opponents Active Pokmon
Seed Bomb does 20 damage to
your opponents Active Pokmon
On the first turn of the game, the starting player skips this step. Once that player has done all his or her other actions, the
turn will end. After that, each player attacks as normal. Think carefully if you want to go first or second!
Pokmon Trading Card Game Rul
ATTACK AND END YOUR TURNWhen you are ready to attack, first make sure that youve done everything in step 2 that you want to do. Once you attack, your
turn is over, so you cant go back later!
Attacking has three simple steps. Once you get it figured out, youll be attacking like a pro in no time!
CHECK the Energy attached toyour Active Pokmon.
You need the right amount of Energy
attached to a Pokmon for it to attack. For example, look at Chespin. Its Vine Whipattack costs , so you must have at least
1 Energy attached to Chespin to use thisattack. Next, its Seed Bomb attack costs
. You need at least 2 Energy attachedto Chespin to use Seed Bomb, and the
means you need to have 1 Energyattached. However, the means that anykind of Energy can be used for the second
Energy. will work, but so will , , or
any other Energy type. Once you are sureyou have the right Energy, announce whichattack you are using.

Dont apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokmon!
Pokmon Trading Card Game Rul
CHECK Weakness and Resistance of your opponents Active Pokmon. Some Pokmon have Weakness or Resistance to Pokmon of certain other types,
marked in the lower-left corner of the card. (For example, Froakie has a Weakness
to Pokmon.) If the attack does damage, your opponents Active Pokmon takes
more damage if it has Weakness to the attackers type. It takes less damage from a
Pokmon if it has Resistance to that Pokmons type.
PUT damage counters on your opponents Active Pokmon.
When you attack, put 1 damage counter on your opponents Active Pokmon for
each 10 damage your Pokmons attack does (written to the right of the attackname). In the example above, Chespins Vine Whip does 10 damage. Then, FroakiesWeakness of x2 to Pokmon makes that 10 x 2 = 20 damage. So put 2 damage
counters with 10s on them on Froakie. If an attack says to do something else, besure to do that, too!
Your attack is complete, so check to see if any Pokmon were Knocked Out by theattack. Some attacks can damage more than one Pokmon, and sometimes theycan even damage the attacking Pokmon! So, make sure to check every Pokmonthat was affected by the attack.
If a Pokmon has total damage at least equal to its HP (for example, 5 or more
damage counters on a Pokmon with 50 HP), it is Knocked Out. If a playersPokmon is Knocked Out, that player puts it and all cards attached to it in thediscard pile. That players opponent takes 1 of his or her own Prize cards and puts itinto his or her hand.
The player whose Pokmon was Knocked Out chooses a new Active Pokmon fromhis or her Bench. If your opponent cant do this because his or her Bench is empty
(or for any other reason), you win the game! If your opponent still has Pokmon inplay, but you just took your last Prize card, you also win the game!
Your turn is over.
Next, you take care of a few special things during the between-turns step.

Pokmon Trading Card Game Rul
BETWEEN-TURNS STEPBefore the game continues to the next player, take care of Special Conditions in this order:
1. POISONED 2. BURNED 3. ASLEEP 4. PARALYZED
Then, apply the effects of any Abilities (or anything else that a card states must happen between turns). After both
players have done these things, check to see if affected Pokmon were Knocked Out. Then, start the next players turn!
SPECIAL CONDITIONSSome attacks leave the Active Pokmon Asleep, Burned, Confused, Paralyzed, or Poisonedthese are called Special Conditions. They canonly happen to an Active Pokmonwhen a Pokmon goes to the Bench, you remove all its Special Conditions.
Evolving a Pokmon also removes its Special Conditions.
4
AsleepTurn the Pokmon counterclockwise to
show that it is Asleep.
If a Pokmon is Asleep, it cannot attack or
retreat. Between turns, flip a coin. If youflip heads, the Pokmon wakes up (turn thecard back right-side up), but if you flip tails,
it stays Asleep.
BurnedIf a Pokmon is Burned, it may take damage
between turns. When a Pokmon is Burned,
put a Burn marker on it. Between turns, theowner of the Burned Pokmon flips a coin.If he or she flips tails, put 2 damage
counters on the Burned Pokmon.A Pokmon cannot have two Burn markers;if an attack gives it another Burn marker, thenew Burned Condition simply replaces the
old one. Make sure your Burn markers look
different from your damage counters
ConfusedTurn a Confused Pokmon with its headpointed toward you to show that it isConfused.
If a Pokmon is Confused, you must flip acoin before attacking with that Pokmon.
If you flip heads, the attack works normally, but if you flip tails, your Pokmon receives3 damage counters and the attack ends
without further effect.
ParalyzedTurn the Paralyzed Pokmon clockwise to
show that it is Paralyzed.
If a Pokmon is Paralyzed, it cannot attack
or retreat. Remove the Special ConditionParalyzed during the between-turns stepif your Pokmon was Paralyzed since thebeginning of your last turn.
PoisonedA Poisoned Pokmon takes damagebetween turns. When a Pokmon is
Poisoned, put a Poison marker on it. Put adamage counter on each Poisoned Pokmon
during each between-turns step. A Pokmoncannot have two Poison markers; if an attackgives it another Poison marker, the new
Poisoned Condition simply replaces theold one. Make sure your Poison markers lookdifferent from your damage counters.
Removing Special ConditionsMoving to the Bench removes all Special
Conditions. The only Special Conditions thatprevent Pokmon from retreating are Asleepand Paralyzed. Since Asleep, Confused,
and Paralyzed all rotate the Pokmoncard, whichever one happened last to thePokmon is the only one that is still in effect.Since Poisoned and Burned use markers,
those dont affect other Special Conditions. An unfortunate Pokmon could be Poisoned,Burned, and Paralyzed all at the same time!

ADVANCED RULESFULL DETAILS OF TAKING A MULLIGANIf either player has no Basic Pokmon in his or her opening hand, that player must take a mulligan. Heres how the timing works:
If both players have no Basic Pokmon in their opening hands:
Both players reveal their hands, then just start over as normal.
If only one player has no Basic Pokmon in his or her opening hand:
That player announces that he or she has a mulligan, then waits until the other player has placed his or her Active Pokmon,Benched Pokmon, and Prize cards.
Then, the player with no Basic Pokmon reveals his or her hand, then shuffles it back into his or her deck. The playerdoes this until he or she gets an opening hand with a Basic Pokmon, then proceeds as normal.
Then, the player who did not have to start over may draw a card for each additional time his or her opponent took a mulligan. For example, if both players took 2 mulligans, and then Player A took 3 additional mulligans, Player B may draw up to 3 cards. If any of those cards are Basic Pokmon, they may be put onto the Bench.
Then, reveal all Pokmon, and begin the game.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN ATTACK?Every attack has a cost and a name, and it might have a base damage and damage text. Most of the text on a Pokmon describes its attack, even if it doesnt do any damage.
For example, Panpours Collect does no damage, but its still an attack! Anything else is called an Ability or something else. For instance,Dusknoirs Sinister Hand Ability moves damage counters around, but it doesnt count as an attack.
Koffings Smokescreen affects Collect, but not Sinister Hand.

FULL DETAILS OF ATTACKINGFor most attacks, the order in which you do things doesnt really matter. However, for a complicated attack, here are the full steps:Look at your Pokmon and decide which attack to use. Make sure you have the correct Energy attached. Then, announce youare using that attack.
If your Active Pokmon is Confused, check now to see if its attack fails.
Make any choices the attack requires you to make. For example, if an attack says, Choose 1 of your opponents Benched
Pokmon, you would make that choice now.
Do anything the attack requires you to do to use it. For example, you must flip a coin if an attack says Flip a coin. If tails, thisattack does nothing.
Apply any effects that might alter or cancel the attack. For example, if an attack that was used against your Pokmon last turnsays, If the Defending Pokmon tries to attack during your opponents next turn, your opponent flips a coin. If tails, that attackdoes nothing. (But rememberif an Active Pokmon moves to the Bench, all effects of attacks go away. So if your ActivePokmon has changed since your opponent used the attack in this example, you dont have to flip a coin.)
Apply any effects that happen before damage, then place damage counters, and then do all other effects.
Figuring out how many damage counters to place is usually straightforward. However, if many things are changing the damage, followthese steps in this order:
Start with the base damage printed to the right of the attack. If an , , or + is printed next to it, the attack text will tell youthe damage to do. If an attack tells you to put damage counters on a Pokmon, you have no more calculations to do becausedamage counters arent affected by Weakness, Resistance, or any other effects on a Pokmon. Just put those damage counters
on the affected Pokmon!
Figure out damage effects on your Active Pokmon based on Trainer cards or any other relevant effects. For example,if your Pokmon used an attack last turn that said, During your next turn, each of this Pokmons attacks does 40 more damage(before applying Weakness and Resistance), then add that in. Stop if the base damage is 0 (or if the attack does not do anydamage at all). Otherwise, keep going.
Increase the damage by the amount next to your opponents Active Pokmons Weakness, if it has Weakness to your ActivePokmons type.
Reduce the damage by the amount next to your opponents Active Pokmons Resistance, if it has Resistance to your ActivePokmons type.
Figure out damage effects of Trainer or Energy cards, or other effects on your opponents Active Pokmon. For example,if your opponents Active Pokmon has an Ability that says Any damage done to this Pokmon by attacks is reduced by 20(after applying Weakness and Resistance).
For each 10 damage of the final attack, put 1 damage counter on the affected Pokmon. If the damage is 0 or less, dont put onany damage counters!

WHAT IF YOU SHOULD DRAW MORE CARDSTHAN YOU HAVE?If a card tells you to draw or look at more cards from your deck than you have left, draw or look at the cards you have and continue play
as normal.
For example, if a card tells you to draw or look at the top 5 cards of your deck and you have only 3 cards left in your deck, draw the top 3 or
look at the top 3. You lose if you cannot draw a card at the beginning of your turn, but not if you cannot draw one because a card told you
to do so.
WHAT IF BOTH PLAYERS WIN AT THE SAME TIME?You win if you take your last Prize card or if your opponent has no Benched Pokmon to replace his or her Active Pokmon if it is KnockedOut (or otherwise removed from play). This makes it possible for both players to win at the same time.
If this happens, play Sudden Death. However, if you win in both ways and your opponent wins in only one way, you are the victor!
WHATS SUDDEN DEATH?In Sudden Death, you play a new game, but each player uses only 1 Prize card instead of the usual 6. Except for the single Prize card, treatthe Sudden Death game like a whole new game! Flip a coin to see who goes first and set everything up as usual. The winner of this game is
the overall winner. If the Sudden Death game also ends in Sudden Death, just keep playing Sudden Death games until somebody wins.
WHAT DOES AND DOESNT COUNT FOR APOKMONS NAME?
Some Pokmon cards have extra information after their name, such as a Level or a symbol like . A Pokmons name changes
how you can evolve or play certain cards. Level is notpart of a Pokmons name:
Gengar, Gengar LV. 43, Gengar LV. 44, and Gengar LV.X all have the same name
Symbols at the end of a Pokmons nameare part of a Pokmons name:
Alakazam, Alakazam , and Alakazamhall have different names from each other
However, (Delta Species) is not part of a Pokmons name. Aerodactyl and Aerodactyl (Delta Species) have the samename
An owner in a Pokmons nameispart of the Pokmons name:
Geodude and Brocks Geodude have different names
When you are building a deck, you can have only 4 copies of a card with the same name in it, except for basic Energy cards. If your deck has1 each of Gengar, Gengar LV. 43, Gengar LV. 44, and Gengar LV. Xyou cant put any more cards named Gengar in your deck! However, you
could have 4 Geodude and 4 Brocks Geodude.
When evolving, the evolves from Pokmon name must match the Pokmon being evolved. So Graveler can evolve from Geodude, or
Geodude LV. 12, but not Brocks Geodude.

DECK BUILDINGWhen building most decks, youll need to follow a few rules. One of the most important rules is that your deck must be exactly 60 cards;it cant be any more or less, not even if its just 59 or 61 cards!
Also, except for basic Energy, you can only have 4 cards with the same name in your deck. This means you can have only 4 cards calledPignite in your deck, even if they each have different attacks. Lastly, your deck must have at least one Basic Pokmon in it.
Building your own deck can be challenging, but also a lot of fun. A League Leader at a Pokmon League can help you withsome ideas. Another good idea is to find a theme deck you like and try modifying it. Remember to keep it at exactly 60 cards!
If youre starting a whole new deck though, try these guidelines for starters:
Pick one or two Energy types at most. Remember, most Pokmon can use any Energy for attacks, so they can go in nearlyany deck!
To make sure you have enough Energy cards, try between 18 and 22 in your 60-card deck
Trainer cards are important, too. Cards like Pokmon Communication and Energy Search can help you find exactly the cards youneed! Around 13 to 20 Trainer cards is a good start
Of course, you need Pokmon! The rest of your deck will be Pokmon. Remember, you need at least one Basic Pokmon in yourdeck. Collect your favorite Pokmon so you can have 4 copies of them in your deck to make sure you draw them as much aspossible. And, if that Pokmon evolves, try to get 4 of each of its Evolution chain Pokmon as well!
Every deck is different and will fit your personality and personal strategy. Over time youll find the numbers of Pokmon, Trainer, andEnergy cards you like the best.

for a Pokmon canfind Archen. Also, cards that affect unevolved Pokmon will affect Restored Pokmon.
When playing with older Fossil Pokmon, the most important rules to follow are the Evolves from or Put this card into play
text. If, for example, Kabuto is printed in a later set as a Restored Pokmon, there will be a Stage 1 Kabutops. Regardless ofwhich Kabuto you have in play, you can evolve it into any Kabutops that says Evolves from Kabuto. This means you can evolvea Stage 2 Kabutops from a Restored Kabuto or a Stage 1 Kabutops from a Stage 1 Kabuto.
