“This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us…
My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love.”
1 John 3:16,18
February 14th this year is Valentine’s Day but also Ash Wednesday. I don’t remember when these two significant
days have been aligned before? One is dedicated to the love between individuals and the other between God
and all people.
Ever since I can remember Valentine’s Day was a day to write little love notes of affirmation to certain people are
special to us. Remember those little Valentine’s cards we used to give out as children? I remember grade school
teachers making sure that everyone in the class had written Valentine’s for everyone else. No one was left out,
everyone was loved. Of course, when we became closer to being adults and especially when we were “in love”
with that special someone, Valentine’s Cards took on a very different role. Everyone loves to be loved and needs
to be loved. It doesn’t matter if there is a romantic element, let’s take time this month to affirm our love to people
in our life. So often we only communicate criticism when we communicate, but it’s more important to commu-
nicate our love. Love does indeed change the world.
Ash Wednesday is really a love day also. It’s a day we remind
ourselves about God’s great love for us. Yes, it is solemn and
contemplative. Yes, it is the beginning of Lent where we begin a
40-day season before Easter to remember God’s sacrificial love
in Jesus Christ. However, isn’t the great love of God the main
point of Lent/Ash Wednesday? Because God’s love for us was so
great, He sent Jesus to die for the forgiveness of sin so no one
would be left out, that they would all know His love! Therefore,
we have the privilege to explore our hearts during Lent, to ex-
amine our motives and life-styles, to see if there is anything that
is hindering our relationship with God which Jesus has made
possible for us. God’s love changed the world like no other love.
In fact, I would venture to say, because God’s love changed the
world we are able to be genuine lovers of all people!
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day! Be sure to let that special someone know you love them. Take time to plan an act
of love backed up with some words of love.
Also, don’t forget that Ash Wednesday we will have a special Worship service to kick off the season of Lent at
7pm. We will serve Communion and dispense the Ash on our foreheads together in recognition of our unity in
Christ and desire to become better followers of His loving ways.
Peace,
Pastor Mike

Ever wonder what happens to your donations to the General Fund?
I thought you might want to equate it based on a gift of $20 per week; below you can see
what a difference that can make in a year.
Of course $100 per week would be 5 times these amounts and $200 per week would be 10
times these amounts. You get the idea, I’m sure, and if it helps or hurts your idea of your gift,
give me a call.

Generation G: Leaving a Spiritual Legacy (or Hot Topics on Grandparenting)
-by Gramma Pat Whisler
Valentine’s Day is coming soon. We associate it with LOVE. So what do we expect? To be LOVED? To LOVE? There is one thing for sure that we know as Christians. The God we believe in is LOVE. So what do we expect? To be LOVED. God offers us an unconditional LOVE. Meaning? “No matter what, my child, I will always care about everything you do. Nothing can change that.” If God is so gracious to give LOVE to us, it is only fair to give it away while in the same time it never leaves. This unconditional LOVE is what we as
grandparents are to offer our grandchildren. No matter what.
God’s Word: We LOVE because he first LOVED us (1 John 4:19). Let us be one of the first to LOVE our grandchildren. That LOVE can be given in prayer. This month’s GP Hot Topic: NO MATTER WHAT Do you fear the world our grandchildren are inheriting? Do you question some things your grandchildren are doing? Have you ever had a visit with your grandchildren that did not go so well? Did they break your favorite ceramic piece? Did they deliberately disobey? Did they do something downright sneaky? Did they do and/or say something that hurt your feelings? Grandchildren are human just like their grandparents and sin, just like their grandparents. But they are also children, not like their grandparents. Yet they are still grand. Now is the time to become an audacious (bold, brave, daring, fearless, uninhibited, inventive) grandparent. Fear paralyzes you from taking action. Overcome your fear with trust in God’s guidance. LOVE, on the other hand, motivates and directs audacious faith so that it always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres. ( 1Cor 13:7) Audacious faith compels you to get up and do something guided by the Spirit in truth and grace. Start the ‘get up’ with prayer. Audacious grandparents are helped by a praying community of believers. When you discover and accept that God is bigger than any power, any authority, or any problem you could ever face, you may discover that the grand has once again returned to grandparenting. Let Paul’s words to Timothy speak to us grandparents everywhere: I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother and to your mother. And I know that you now have that same faith. That is why I remind you to use the gift God gave you… Now let it grow, as a small flame grows into a fire. God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid. He gave us a spirit of power and LOVE and self-control.
A c t i o n : Let’s put boldness in our grandparenting by showing our grandchildren our LOVE for God’s world. Happy Valentine’s Day.
A t h o u g h t : Just when you think you know what LOVE is, along come grandchildren.
Join our Grandparents@Prayer meeting on February 25 in room 10 a half hour before the traditional service begins.

Chaplain visits to the Mental Health patients can occur in the various medical units of the hospital but also in the designated Mental Health Unit. One day I received consultation orders for five patients there. One person admitted that he started having mental problems after he began taking drugs. He was ashamed of his behavior and felt guilty. He had no idea about God and knew nothing of what the Bible taught. He had never spoken to a pastor, priest or chaplain before. With his permission, I summarized how the creator God loved him and how He demonstrated that great love in Jesus Christ. He was very intrigued by the the idea of finding forgiveness and a new kind of life. But he wanted to think on what I had shared with him and was very grateful for the time given him. He declined my offer of prayer for him. He was discharged the next day. The next patient I visited told me right away that Jesus and Satan were brothers. I respectfully told him he can believe that if he wants but that idea is not supported in the Bible I believe in. He wasn’t interested in talking any more. Another man stated that he was Christian in faith and wanted prayer. But, when I joined hands with him to pray, he kept repeating the words, “Jesus, Father, mother of God” in kind of a mantra. I tried hard to concentrate on my intercessory prayer, but it was difficult. When done praying he said, “That was wonderful, I don’t need to meet with a chaplain ever again, thank you so much!” Another patient told me she was Christian but did not want to talk to a judgmental chaplain. I assured her I was not that and was here to listen graciously and to help in any way I am able. I listened for several minutes and then we held hands to pray for her needs. She received a card of short prayers and a Gideon Bible.
When any of us sees someone who looks or acts strange, we don’t always know what kind of abuse, trauma, emotional pain or hopelessness they have experienced. “Lord give me a non-judgmental compassionate heart with a desire to understand and comfort those who have been mistreated, hurt or made poor choices.”
SCRIPTURE: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is both born of God and knows God. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.”
I John 4:7,9 NASB
The flu has caused a lot of sickness and over 135
deaths in San Diego County to date. Your
prayers for me and our chaplain staff to stay
healthy are much appreciated.

GRACE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IS A CONFESSING CHURCH, and we believe:
That Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation.
That Holy Scripture is the triune God’s revealed Word,
the Church’s only infallible rule of faith and life.
That God’s people are called to holiness in all aspects of life.
