– Assist military personnel transition to second careers as teachers in K-12 public schools

– Recruit quality teachers for public schools– Help relieve teacher shortages, primarily in

high need subject areas

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS FOR ACADEMIC SUBJECTS

• State drives requirements• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a

regionally accredited institution required • Three pillars

– Content: subject area contained in your degree– Pedagogy: completion of a teacher licensure

program– Testing: PRAXIS series or state specific exam

• What is Career & Technical Education (CTE)?– State drives the requirements– Degree may be required along with relevant experience– Can use currently military skills towards licensure

• Examples: mechanics, generator operator, etc. – CTE provides career options for those not wanting to teach an

• 81 percent of dropouts say relevant, real-world learning opportunities would have kept them in high school.

• More than 70 percent of secondary CTE concentrators pursued postsecondary education shortly after high school.

Some 14 million students are enrolled in CTE—encompassing every state, with programs in nearly 1,300 public high schools and 1,700 two-year-colleges.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Counseling and referral services only– Any military member who has served honorably

• Financial assistance– Retired from service– Active duty within one year of retirement– Separated for a physical disability on or after 8 Jan 02 and register within three

years of separation– Serving in the Selected Reserve with at least 6 years of service and commit to

serving an additional 3 years– Served 4 years on active duty and transition into the Guard/Reserve for at least 3

years on or after 8 Jan 02 and register within three years of separation

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

• $5,000 stipend for tuition assistance– Must teach in a low-income school for three years– At least 30% of the students participating in the free or reduced lunch

program– Cannot be eligible to receive Post 9-11

• $5,000 bonus– Must teach in a low-income school for three years– At least 30% of students participating in the free or reduced lunch program

• $10,000 bonus – Must teach in a low-income school for three years– At least 50% of students participating in the free or reduced lunch program

• Maximum received cannot exceed $10,000
