Usetapeto“draw”apaththroughyourhouseforkidstofollow.ThinkZigZag,curved,undertables—whatever!Youcouldusedifferentcolorsformorethanonepath,orjustdoashorterlineinoneroomandhavethekidsblowpompomsalongthe“maze”throughastraw.Itcanbeassimpleordifficultasyourkidswouldenjoy.Anothertwististo‘draw’lilypadsorothershapesforkidstohopalong,thenwhentheygettired,tosspompomsorstuffedanimalsintothelilypadtargets.Or‘draw’ahop-scotchonyourfloor.

Practicemannersandtakingturnswitha‘tea’party.Prac-ticesettingthetable.Filltheteapotwithwaterandletyourchildpracticepouringintothecups.Youcanmakeabigdealaboutsayingpleaseandthankyouaftereachcup,besillyanduseaccentsorfunvoices,and‘cheers’foreachroundoftea.Youcouldeveneatsnacktogetheroffthetoyplates,andthenwashdishestogetherafterward.

Makepuddingasdirectedonbox.Youcanstickwiththenaturalcolororaddsomeasyouseefit—rememberthatfoodcoloringstainsmostclothes(andfingers),sowearoldclothesand/orcolorlightly.Usethecookiesheetsasacanvastofingerpaintyoucanmakedesignswithyourfingers,mixcolors,smearandstartoveragain.Whenthisgetsold,showthemhowtomakeathinlayerofpuddingandthenuseaforkorotherkitchenutensilstoetchdesignsinthepudding.Trayswithaliphelpthepuddingstayonthe‘canvas’.

Spreadtowelsoveralargeareaonthekitchenorbathroomfloor.Putdishsoapandaboutaninchofwaterinonetubtomakeanicesoapysolutionforthetoysanduseanoldtoothbrushtoscrubyourcars/animalsclean.Youcanalsomakearinsingtubwithahigherwaterlevelthattheycanrelaxinaftertheirscrub.Ifyoudecidetouseshavingcream,youonlyneedarinsingtub.Kidslovesquirtingtheshavingcreamandorwaterandscrubbingthebubbles.Givethematoweltodryofftheirtoys.

Pourbeans/riceintocontainerandhidethesmalltreasuresunderthesurface.Haveyourchild‘dig’herfingersthroughthericetofindthetreasures.Encouragehertofeelthericebetweenherfingers,digintoit,clenchherfistaroundit,watchitfalloffherfingers,etc,exploringthesensoryexperi-ence.Whensheisdoneexploringit,haveherpracticefillingandpouringthericeintoandoutofothersmallcontainers.

Usescissorstopoke4-6holesinoneendofeachpaperroll(youshouldmakeonetoo!).Cutvariouslengthsofstring2-4ftlongandtiethemthroughtheholes.Decoratetheremainingrollwithstickers,markers,tissuepaper,etc.Encourageyourchildtorunordanceholdingtherollsothatthestringsflowbehind.It’samazinghowlongtheycanruninacirclewatchingthestringsgracefullydanceintheair.Youcanpretendtobeinaparade,putonshowsforeachother,orjustdancearoundtogether—it’smorefunwithatleast2people.

Ifusingcardboard,cutintosmallsquares(about4”).Usemarkerstodrawsmalldesigns(about2”)oncardboardsquaresoronbottomofcups.Dependingonyourchild’sabilities,childoradultcanusethepushpintopokeholesalongthelinesinthedesigns.Putthecardboardsquareovertheflashlight(orshinetheflashlightintotheopencup)andshineyour‘constellation’onthewallorceilingofadarkroom.Olderkidsmayenjoylearningaboutrealconstella-tionsandmakingtheirown.

Inalargepot,combineallthedryingredients.Mixwell.Addtheoilandwater.Stiruntilthemixtureisfirmandhardtostir.Becarefulnottoovercook.Dumpoutofpotontoalightlyflouredsurface.Whencool,kneaduntildoughissmoothandpliable.Storeinanair-tightcontainer.Refrigerate.Thiscanlastupto3monthsifstoredwell
