R/8 Module Description

R/8 MODULEDESCRIPTION

Supports up to eight Dry contact, Form C relay outputs (P1 - P8).

Contains an NC tamper input for use with an external tamper switch. Boards are shipped from the factory without a jumper across the tamper input. If the tamper input is not used, connect a jumper from P10-1 to P10-2.

Is connected to a reader bus on either the apC series or iSTAR series.

Uses a 16-position rotary address switch (SW1) with eight valid address positions (1–8). Address positions 9–16 are reserved for testing. All R/8 modules on a reader bus must have a unique address.

Installation Requirements

INSTALLATIONREQUIREMENTS

This section describes the dimensions and installation requirements for the R/8 module.

Module Dimensions Figure 3 shows the dimensions of the R/8 module. Maximum component height is 0.5 inches (12.7 mm).

FIGURE 3. R/8 Module Dimensions

Software and FirmwareRequirements

All current versions of C•CURE system software and firmware support the R/8 module.

Enclosures UL has approved the RM-DCM-CAN and RM-CAN enclosures for use with R/8 boards.

Mounting the R/8 Board in an RM-DCM-CAN Enclosure

To mount the R/8 board in an RM-DCM-CAN enclosure, use four 1/4” 6-32 screws and star washers to secure the board to the mounting studs in the enclosure (see Figure 4). There are four possible mount positions for the R/8 board in the enclosure.

4

Page 5: R/8 Module Quick Start Installation Guide

Installation Requirements

Ensure that you maintain a minimum of 1/4” spacing between electronic components and the enclosure.

Installation Requirements

Power Requirements Each R/8 module has a typical rating of 125mA at 12 VDC, plus another 25mA for each active relay. The maximum current rating for the R/8 module is 325 mA. The need for an external power supply is based on the electrical current available from the panel or controller power supply, the calculated draw of other boards in the system, and the voltage drop due to wiring length.

NOTES If an external power supply is required, ensure that P9 pin 4 (GND) on the R/8 module is attached to both the -12VDC (GND) of the panel and the -12VDC (GND) of the external power supply. This is necessary for reliable signal communications. See Figure 6 for wiring connections.

If an external power supply is used, the source must be UL Listed for Access Control (or Burglar Alarm), Class 2, and Power-Limited with sufficient standby power capability.

FIGURE 6. Wiring Connections

Wire Type and Length The R/8 module wiring requirements are as follows. These requirements also apply to RM readers and I/8 modules.

Data line to apC and iSTAR – twisted pair, shielded 24 AWG (.5015 mm), Belden #9841. Maximum distance is 4000 ft. (1212 m).

Power line to apC and iSTAR – twisted pair, 18 AWG (1.0236 mm), Belden #8461 or 22 AWG (.6452) Belden #8442. See “Power Requirements”.

NOTE Wiring methods shall be in accordance with the National Electric Code (ANSI/NFPA 70), local codes, and the authorities having jurisdiction.

RS-485 communication requires low capacitance cable. Failure to use the proper cable type can cause R/8 failure or erratic behavior.

Use shielded, twisted pair cable for input and output circuits that extend from the unit. Ground the shield at one end only, usually at the circuit end.

Installation Requirements

Environment The operating temperature ranges for the R/8 module are 32-120° F (0-49° C); 85% relative humidity @ 86° F ± 3° (30° C ± 2°).

The R/8 module is suitable for indoor use, to be installed within the protected premises.

Communication Wiring The R/8 module P9 pin wiring signals are shown in Table 1.

Connect the R/8 module to an RM reader bus. The module must be within the maximum wire length range of 4000 ft. (1212 m).

Installation Requirements

Tamper Switch You can wire an external switch to the 2-pin connector labeled P10 Tamper (see Figure 2) to provide a tamper indication. The switch is normally closed when the tamper is secure. If an external tamper switch is not used, connect a jumper across pins 1 and 2 of P10.

Jumper W2 controls the Tamper reporting.

If W2 is closed (jumper On), the tamper is disabled.

If W2 is open (jumper Off), the tamper is enabled.

If you use the tamper, ensure that it is configured in the C•CURE software. The tamper indication can be linked to an internal alarm (event) by using the C•CURE Administration application.

NOTE To comply with UL requirements, a UL Listed tamper switch must be installed to monitor the R/8 module’s enclosure/cover.

Grounding Ground the shield wires at one end only, normally to the same point used for the earth ground in the apC panel or iSTAR controller (see Figure 7).

Installation Requirements

Setting ModuleAddress and EOL

Termination

An R/8 module has a rotary address switch (SW1) with 16 positions (see Figure 2). Positions 1 through 8 are used for the module address. The remaining positions are reserved.

The switch provides addresses 1 through 8 for the apC, apC/8X, iSTAR, iSTAR Pro, and iSTAR eX.

The switch provides addresses 1 through 4 for an apC/L.

Be sure that all R/8s on a reader bus have unique addresses.

EOL Termination (W1)

If the R/8 module is the last physical device on the bus, jumper W1.

If the R/8 module is not the last physical device on the bus, park the W1 jumper.

NOTE Make sure that EOL termination is enabled on only one device on the reader bus.

Door Strike Relay Ratings

Contact relays for the R/8 output boards are rated at 30VDC, 2.0A resistive. See Figure 9 for wiring instructions.

Do not use output board relays to switch power for a magnetic lock that exceeds the ratings of the relay contacts shown in this table. Use an external switching relay instead.

NOTE All door strike relays must have a diode or MOV connected.

Testing R/8 Modules

TESTING R/8MODULES

To test R/8 modules:

1. Properly configure the R/8 module in either the apC or iSTAR using the C•CURE Administration application and put the apC or iSTAR online.

2. Measure the supply voltage to the R/8.

The voltage can be measured between pin 1 (+12 VDC supply) and pin 4 (ground) on the P9 connector. The voltage must be +12 VDC (+/-5%).

3. Check the R/8 address setting.

The R/8 must be set to an unused address, between 1 and 8, when connected to the apC or iSTAR. Use rotary switch SW1 to set the R/8 address.

4. Check the relay outputs. Configure the outputs on the apC or iSTAR using the C•CURE Administration application.

5. Activate the outputs from the Monitor application.

6. Verify that each output has activated by observing the associated status LED for each output (DS2 - DS9).

7. Verify that the Monitor Station reports each output to be activated.

8. Deactivate the outputs from the Monitor application and verify the deactivation by observing the LEDs and the Monitor Station reporting.

PARTS LIST Table 2 lists the part numbers for the R/8 module.

CE NOTICE This product is in compliance with the CE EMC and Electrical Safety Directives of the European Community when used with the Software House apC or iSTAR products. This unit must be enclosed in a box similar to the units noted in the “Enclosures” on page 4 in order to be in compliance.
