This volume was created with the intent of remembering a
special event in the Catholic tradition with Basilicata at its he-
art. During the celebration of Christmas 2012, for the first time
in history, an Italian Region donated a Saint Peter’s Nativity
Scene to the Vatican and it was a Nativity Scene that, although
inspired by tradition, boasted some very original features. The
Crib of Francesco Artese breaks the boundaries of the classic
representation of the Sacred Family. The choice of Matera as
location allows peolple to admire not only one of the most si-
gnificant parts of Lucania, but also the pride of belonging to
this place in the characters’ faces, giving them a beauty far from
commonplace. The skilful reconstruction of the Sassi and the
refined representation of daily life enrich the Christian event
of Christmas without eclipsing it; on the contrary, exalting it.
The support that Total E&P Italia gave to the creation of this
Nativity Scene has been a way of contributing to the promotion
of the image of a territory that deserves to be disclosed, also
due to the uncountable testimonials of its peculiar cultural and
religious identity. We can truly say that we are proud of having
contributed to the creation of this extraordinary event.
artistico lucano e dell’arte presepiale lucana quale simbolo
tempo presente.
During the Christmas period 2012, Basilicata Region, throu-
gh the APT (Territorial Promotion Agency), had the great op-
portunity of paying homage to His Holiness Benedict XVI by
donating a Nativity Scene created by the Master Francesco Ar-
tese. Stemming from the will to promote the excellence of Luca-
nian artistic craftsmanship and nativity art as a symbol of the
cultural and religious identity of the Lucanian people and their
attachment to the Christian tradition, the Nativity Scene recei-
ved an unexpected and appreciative welcome from the Gover-
norate of the Holy See and the Pope. The dream of considerable
symbolic significance and the promotion of Matera and Basili-
cata Region came true. The Lucanian Nativity Scene exhibited,
for several weeks, in the heart of Saint Peter’s Square, cradle of
Christianity, put the Nativity event in the breathtaking Rupe-
strian Churches and Sassi di Matera (Stones of Matera) at the
centre of attention, thereby promoting its territory, culture and
regional artistic sensitivity. The President of the Region, Vito
De Filippo, was thus able to bear witness to the cultural roots
of a people, their identity, concerns and expectations about the
present.
In 2012, the year proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI as the“Year of Faith”, the Holy See accepted as a gift a Nativity Scene that the Region of Basilica-ta, through its regional promotion agency (APT), gave to Pope Benedict as an expression of the cultural and religious identity of its people. This was an unprecedented event. Indeed, it was the first time that an Italian Region had gifted a Nativity Scene to the Vatican.
The piece of art, made by the Master craftsman Francesco Artese, one of
the leading modern-day nativity sculptors, was placed in St. Peter’s Squa-
re, at the heart of Christianity.
It was inspired by the cultural landscape of the Murgia Materana Regional
Park, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A complex landscape
in which man-made constructions overlap with natural rocks and cavities,
and where houses, churches and shrines form a single, dynamic and fascina-
ting whole.
A natural series of cliffs, gullies and grottoes, some used for centuries as dwellings, others as hermitages by monks. A landscape made all the more striking by the efforts of these monks, who turned it into a holy place by buil-
ding numerous monasteries, churches and shrines. The figures depicted in the Nativity Scene offer a glimpse of everyday life, of the works and activi-ties going on in the Basilicata region during the centuries past, of a generous poverty, a deep-rooted simplicity prone to accept the Christian faith. The humble gestures of about a hundred figurines bring the stone-filled landsca-pe to life in a particularly charming and fascinating setting. The heart of Ba-silicata receives the Holy Family of Nazareth in a very beautiful backdrop, tempting visitors to lose themselves in its enchanted atmosphere.
While thousands of people thronged to the site of the Nativity Scene in St. Peter’s Square, an exact replica was being presented by the Fondazione Giovanni Paolo II to the Argentinian Republic. This might be seen as a metaphor for the continuity of the Church, a continuity manifesting itself in the election of the new Pope: the Argentinian Francis I.
By this initiative the region of Basilicata offered up its cultural heritage,
built over thousands of years, to be displayed in a setting of worldwide re-
levance. Efforts to enhance the image of the region continue with the candi-
dature of Matera for the European Capital of Culture title for the year 2019.
Master craftsman Francesco Artese is considered to be one of the lea-
ding exponents of the Italian school of Nativity sculptures. Born in 1957, at
the age of just 19 he created his first Nativity scene for the Convent of the
Franciscan Friars in Grassano (MT), the place where he spent much of his
childhood and adolescence.
He made his first Nativity scene based on the Stones of Matera in 1981.
This extraordinarily large work of about 120 sq.m was displayed in via Vene-
to, in Rome, and was such a success that the Maestro was thereafter called
upon to show Nativity Scenes of various sizes, sometimes enormous, in
major cities in Europe and elsewhere.
He was commissioned by the Italian Consulate in New York to produce a
very large Nativity Scene of 140 sq.m in Our Lady of Pompei church in the
Greenwich Village district of New York City. In the same months Artese
sculpted another major Nativity Scene in Washington. In 1991 one of his Na-
tivity scenes was displayed, for the first time, in the Upper Basilica of Assisi,
the town of St. Francis. This was a major accomplishment for Master Artese,
all the more because the Saint of Assisi, besides being his major source of
spiritual inspiration, is generally recognized as the starter of the Nativity sce-
ne tradition. In Umbria Artese also produced works for the cities of Perugia
and Spoleto while, in the same year, one of his works was presented at the
Verona Arena.
In 1999 UNESCO asked the Maestro to prepare a Nativity Scene for-
Bethlehem, to be displayed at the World Nativity Museum. Artese pro-
duced a 90 sq.m installation, in which the Stones of Matera represented the
ideal Nativity backdrop. This extraordinary work was applauded by the natio-
nal and foreign press and by critics as well.
Artese’s success continued in France, Poland and Slovenia. Back to Italy he
presented his latest, extraordinary, work at the heart of Christianity.
For Total E&P Italia it is an honour to contribute to the Nativity Scene
project in St. Peter’s Square, knowing that it also made a significant contri-
bution to promoting and enhancing Basilicata image. With this book of
photographs Total E&P Italia wishes to pay homage to, and leave a reminder
of, this extraordinary work.

The sculpture was made from 2cm-thick polystyrene coated with cement mortar, on which a “ tuff effect” was created to resemble the stone dwellings of Matera. For the scenes and figurines Artese drew inspiration from the 1960s photos of Carbone and Zavattini. The scene includes about 100 figures made entirely from terracotta by Vincenzo Velardita of Caltagirone, clothed with hand-made starched fabrics by sisters Nadia and Daniela Balestrieri of Portici (NA), based on the traditional costumes of Lucanian peasants. The artist chose to dress also the Holy Family in traditional Lucanian garments.

The faces possess an astonishing expressiveness, and the accuracy of the urban landscape is amazing: it is still possible to recognize houses, buildings and views visible in the modern-day town.

Sasso Barisano situated in the North-West, is the heart of the old town, the richest in sculpted portals and friezes. Sasso Caveoso is placed in the South, and is laid out like a Roman amphitheatre, filled with terraced cave dwellings. Its name probably derives from the caves and ancient theatres built there. At its centre lies Civita, the rocky spur separating the two Stones, on top of which there is the Cathedral. The backdrop to all of this is the Murgia plain with its wonderful Park.
The Stones of Matera were the first place in Southern Italy to be recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO (in 1993), and the sixth in the whole of Italy. The reasons given for its entry included, for the first time, the concept of “cultural landscape”, an exceptional example of the fine balance between human settlements and environment. The sculpture depicts the ancient districts of Sasso Barisano, Sasso Caveoso and Civita.

“This version of Matera that surrounds the Nativity scene is an attempt to re-experience that poverty so generous of heart, that simplicity so profound as to welcome God in the humble gestures of a hundred figurines, peasants and shepherds bringing to life the Stones which were yesterday a centre of humanity and now are a World Heritage site.”
