    Dear Readers,

Jordansa Media, LLC introduces Purpose4teens.com. The online and print magazine de-

signed for teens and their parents. Finally, we have a magazine that speaks positively about

teenagers. Whew! Welcome to the premier edition of Purpose4teens. The concept of the

magazine is to provide teens and parents the support they need to create a structured, posi-

tive, balanced lifestyle for the future. So much has been said about the negative aspects of

teen life, we find it only necessary to accentuate the positive. The decisions teens make have

such a significant impact on the success of their lives, we created a magazine which would

provide information on such topics as college planning, entrepreneurship, sports, fitness, fine

arts, homework help and much more.

Purpose4teens is planting positive plans for your teens future. We are dedicated to

providing articles to assist teens as they strive to find their own way. The magazine is also

available online at www.purpose4teens.com. The website features useful community infor-

mation and links to various businesses and articles that share in our common goal. We hope

you will be intrigued when exploring each issue of Purpose4tee ns as we strive to provide valu-

able information to build vital, successful future leaders. We would love to hear your thoughts

for future issues. Purpose4teens believes in

empowering teens for the overall success

of the community. We want to hear your

life stories and plans for the future. Please

    Have you ever thought of

turning a hobby into a career?

    Is there something you like

to do; maybe in your spare

    time? Maybe it is something

    like collecting stamps, or paint-

ing pictures. It could even be

something like photography, just something you really en-

joy doing in your spare time.

Lots of young people have dif-

    ferent hobbies they become

    interested in. Have you ever

    thought of making your hob-

bies a job one day? Have you

ever thought what it would be

like to do something you really

    loved?

    When deciding on a career

    one of the most important

things to consider is what are

    your interests. With a hobby

    you already know that you

love it, and I am sure you are

    probably pretty skilled with it

    and together these are very

    compelling reasons to make

a living at doing it. You may

    even ask yourself would this

be possible, could I do some-

thing that I really like and takeit into the world of making a

living? There are lots of ques-

tions that will come up as you

    make this decision, but the

most important one is; do you

    really like your hobby? Could

you do it everyday and what

kind of joy would you get out

    of it?

    To incorporate your hobby

into a career can be one of

    the most enjoyable things you

could do in your life. But be-

    fore you move forward with

plans to go into business you

    must ask yourself whether

    being an entrepreneur is the

right step. It is hard work and

you will need to begin prepar-

    ing yourself for business. This

will require not only a commit-

ment to your hobby but also

to your life as a whole. All hobbies start some-

where, so if owning your own

    business is not the answer,

    then working for a company

would be the road to travel.

If you like to paint pictures

you could be an artist and

you could have an art studio,

    where you would sell your

    work. You could even teach

    classes to others that want

to learn. You could also work

for an art studio, become an

    intern, an assistant, or work

    for the companies that sell

A Hobby As A Career?Written by Patty Wright

    art supplies. If photography is

your hearts love, you could own

    your own studio and photograph

    families, weddings, children and

    pets. You could create memories

for others or you could follow a

different road and work in a pho-

tography studio. The choice is all

yours and it depends upon which

    road meets your needs.

Either way you decide to go,

you must do your homework. Even

though you love your hobby there

might be other aspects that just

are not for you, so in that case stick

with a job and keep the hobby for

    the weekends!

Whenever life is hectic and you feel rushed, most often it s your relationship with your

children that seems to suffer. When you allow your teens needs for attention to suffer,

they start to act out for the wrong type of attention. Teens are capable of taking care

of their own daily needs and we dont always notice we are lacking focus on them. Here

is a brief list of a few positive activities to do with your teen.

    1. Cook a meal together.

    2. Plan a family vacation together.

    3. Go to a concert or attend a sporting event.

    4. Attend your teens extracurricular activities.

    5. Read a magazine or book with your teen.

    6. Make scrapbooks about your family highlighting your teen.

    7. Take a class together.

    8. Talk, talk, talk. You can never have too much conversation.

    9. Develop a new healthy habit together.

    10. Rearrange or redecorate your teens room with them.

    Spending Time With Your Teen

    The process of choosing an

    orthodontist is of vital impor-

tance. Specialists in orthodon-tics are dentists that have tak-

    en the additional training and

    education necessary in an

    accredited orthodontic spe-

    cialty program. Make sure

    the orthodontist you choose

    is licensed in orthodontic care.

    Selecting a good orthodontist

    does not necessarily have to

    be painful. Shop around for

    your orthodontist by checking

    with friends, family and even

    your own general dentist.

    Referrals and word of mouth

    are always best, especially

    from someone that has ex-

perienced the joy of wearingbraces. Looking at anothers

pretty smile also gives you an

    opportunity to see the results.

    The cost of ortho-

    dontics can vary depending

    on the type of alignment

    treatment necessary to cor-

    rect your smile. Insurance

    companies often provide a list

    of accredited, licensed ortho-

    dontists in your area. Many

    orthodontists offer monthly

    billing which helps make

    the process affordable. It is

a good idea to shop around

for at least 3 different ortho-

dontists to help find the bestoption for a perfect smile.

Lets face it, parents are the

    responsible parties for foot-

ing the bill and this decision

should not be made in haste.

    There are different types of

    orthodontic treatments to

    choose from and remember a

    good orthodontist always has

    your teens smile as objective

    number ONE.!!

Barbering is a great opportunity for an in-

dividual with any level of experience. Many

students start off without ever holding a

pair of shears, while others may have been

cutting family members hair for years. No

matter what level of experience, a qualified

school will help teach you the skills necessary

to succeed. The opportunities in the field of

    barbering are endless.

Barber programs teach students the es-

sentials required in providing complete hair

and skin services for men. Students at bar-

ber schools learn such barbering services as

steam facials, facial massages, and foam

shaves as well as modern razor styling, hair

    cutting, coloring, permanent waving, and

blow drying. Students complete on the job

training for their state barber license which

is given by the state barber board.

Barber schools and barber programs may

also offer classes in barbershop ownership

    and business management. Many students

who graduate from barber schools go on

to work for their own business, barber shop

or work as a hair stylist. Barbering salaries

can vary, based on location, experience andclientele. Barber school will teach you how to

cultivate your strengths and how to address

the areas of need to help you succeed in

maximizing your income potential, while cre-

ating a recession proof lifestyle for the future.

    Being a teen can

    be very challeng-

    ing but also very

    rewarding as well.

    Its gets tough try-

    ing to balance your

    family life and per-

    sonal life. Without

    the right guidance,

    as a teen we can

    get easily distract-

    ed and headed the

    wrong direction. Let

me introduce you to my world and a

world that many teens are familiar with.

My name is Rayven Mitchell and I am

a senior at Eastside High School. It hasnt

always been easy growing up in a single

family household but overall I would say

that my mom has done a great job of

raising me. We dont always agree on

the way things are done but I realize

that she always has my best interest at

heart. If it wasnt for her I wouldnt have

the drive to do well in school. She has

always pushed me to do the best that

I can do in everything I do. I know that

I still have a lot to learn about this big

world that we live in. My mother always

kept me active growing up, making sure

that I didnt have a lot of free time to let

my mind wonder in the wrong direction.

I started taking dance when I was 5

years old. The different classes that I

took were tap, jazz, ballet and clogging.

I danced until I entered high school. I was

also in beauty pageants, a cheerleader

for the Eastside Dolphins. Needless to

say I can be kind of a social butterfly.

Little did I know that all the time that

my mother and family invested in me

growing up would have such an impact

on my life decisions and choices as a

teenager. In high school I have contin-

ued to remain active as a cheerleader

and also ran track my sophomore year.

Spending time with my family that has

been positive influences in my life has

helped me to make better choices in life.

There can be a lot of pressure on a teen

trying to maintain friends in school and

staying away from the peer pressure.

I enjoy the school activities, hanging

with my friends, going to the mall, shop-

ping and just being a teen. There are

times that I just want to hang out with

friends but I realize that I cant neglect

my family life because at the end of

the day that is the most important andmost meaningful. As my appreciation

of all the hard work my mom has put

into me, I help her with my brother and

sister as much as I can. When I know

she is tired or had a long day at work I

will fix dinner and get them ready for

bed. It may not be much but I know it

means a lot to her. During the summer

my life gets kind of crazy. I have to bal-

ance between my family with my mom

as well as my family with my dad and

lets not forget my friends. The sum-

mer is a good time to remember and

reflect on the important things in life.

I love all the good food, laughs and

time shared with them. Although we as

teens may not want to admit it but to

get to a destination that is worth going,

we need positive influences in our life.

I have many positive influences in my

life. Each person has their own role in

my life. My dad is one that I know that

I can always go to when I need to talk.He is much easier to talk to than my

mom is. My mom guides me in the right

direction even if I dont want to hear it.

My nana makes me feel better and lets

me know that everything is going to be

okay, and then she reinforces what my

mom already said but just in another

way. Life is about making memories that

are worth remembering. I just want to

make sure that my life is something that

I will be proud of when I look back 20-30

years from now. Who will I be?

    How will I be remembered?

In most activities, stress can re-

sult from poor form. Keep your

    back aligned, with abdominal

    muscles contracted, buttocks

    tucked in, knees aligned over

    feet. This is particularly impor-

    tant when jumping or reaching

    overhead. Once again...an Ultra

Fit trainer will teach you proper

    form and posture when exercis-

    ing.

    Dont bounce whilestretching.

    This ballistic stretching can

    increase the chance of muscle

    tears and soreness. Instead, per-

    form static stretches, which

    call for gradually stretching

through a muscles full rangeof movement until you feel re-

    sistance. This gradually loosens

    muscles without straining them.

Use good footwearWearing improper or worn-out

    shoes places added stress on

your hips, knees, ankles, and feet

    the areas that are affected

in almost 90% of all sports in-

    juries. Choose shoes suited to

    your activity and replace them

    before they wear out.

    Avoid excessiveamounts of cardio

    exercise.

    Excessive aerobics or cardio will

burn muscle or the quality nutri-

ents needed for the muscle to

    recover from your strength train-

    ing workouts. Excessive cardio

is the number one reason why

most people fail on a weight loss

    program. Strength training with

a trainer and the Ultra Fit Nutri-

tional program are the keys to

    weight loss success.

    Warm up withlight weights.

It is important tha t you warm up

    properly when strength training.

    Use a conservative weight for

one or two sets before challeng-

ing the muscle group that you

    are working. This will prevent

injuries and allow you to prog-

    ress and make improvements in

    strength and muscle while losing

    fat and getting in shape.

    Allow your personal Trainer to

    choose your weights until you

truly understand all aspectsof strength training and you

are able to judge the proper

    weights yourself.

    Replace fluids lostthrough sweating.

    This is particularly important

in hot weather, when you can

easily lose more than a quart

of water in an hour. Neglecting

to compensate for fluid loss can

    cause lethargy and nausea, in-

    terfering with your performance.

Even if you dont feel thirsty, its

important to drink at regular in-

    tervals when exercising. Thirst is

    satisfied long before you have

    replenished lost fluids.

    Water is the best choice.

Do not fall victim to the High

    sugar and high carb drinks,

    Sports Drinks or Energy and

    Nutrient Replacement drinks.

    They will absolutely sabotage

    your weight loss program.

    (Okay...this is where the gym

owners get mad at me for

    sabotaging their sports drink

    sales!) Oh well..Sorry...I have to

    be honest.

    Hire an Ultra FitPersonal Trainer

    Everyone has made attempts

    to achieve their fitness goals,

    with most people falling short.

Success in setting up and imple-

menting a Fitness or Weight Loss

    Program has many facets.

    A qualified professional Ultra

    Fit Personal Trainer will guide

you by teaching you the correct

order of the exercises, how to

    properly perform those exer-

    cises, the training intensity and

    the exact weight and repeti-

tions that should be utilized for

    ultimate success. A professional

Ultra Fit trainer will also teach

you the Ultra Fit program and

hold you accountable to the pro-

    gram and your workout schedule

    while motivating you towards

    your goal.

    With your personal trainer em-

    powering you with fitness and

    nutrition knowledge, holding

you accountable and motivat-ing you...You can be confident

in going after your goals and

    achieving them.

    This will insure your success!

    Set Short and LongTerm Goals

Some people will tell you not to

    set unrealistic goals. What exact-

ly is an unrealistic goal? If we be-

lieve in ourselves and we have a

    great trainer and great program

then we can achieve almost any-

thing in a given period of time.

The key is to set both short AND

long term goals. As an example...

Lets look at a woman who wants

to lose 50 pounds. A short term

goal for the woman who is uti-

lizing the program and an Ultra

    Fit personal trainer, would be

able to lose 20-25 pounds in a

    6-7 week period.

The same woman can set her

goal of losing the entire 50

pounds within a 16-18 week pe-

    riod.

Now...Lets look at a man who

    wants to lose 50 pounds.

A short term goal for the man

    who is utilizing the program

    and the personal trainer, would

be able to lose 30-35 pounds

in a 6-7 week period. The sameman can set his goal of losing

    the entire 50 pounds within a 12-

    14 week period.

The man will lose the body fat

and weight faster as he is able

to increase his lean muscle and

his metabolic rate in a shorter

    period of time.

Both will see excellent results on

the Ultra Fit program while utiliz-

    ing a personal trainer.

Dont overdo it.The most common cause of

    injury is exercising too aggres-

sively, the too much, too soon

    syndrome. Start any new exer-

cise at a relatively low intensity

    and gradually increase your

level of exertion over a number

of weeks. Your trainer will guide

    you and implement an effective

    program.

    Control yourmovements.

If you cant control your move-

    ments then slow down. Rapid,

    jerky movement can set the

stage for injury. As you move

    your limbs, keep the muscles

    contracted and move them as

if you are pushing against some

resistance. There are 5 parts to

a perfectly effective exercisemovement and your trainer will

teach you how to perform them

    properly.

    Watch your form andposture.

    A Word for the Wise

When You Cant Trace His Hand, Trust His heart!

No matter what age, gender, culture of socio-economical status, we all have cares, concerns, problems and difficulties in life. If we are wise, we constantly call on

God for help. Not understanding Gods purpose or His rational for lifes circum-stances, we sometimes question God. We wonder if He truly has our best interests

in mind. Know this: If God brings you to it, Hell bring you victoriously throughit! Know that He is with you through any and everything you may ever face andthat you be successful in every area of life. God has already made provisions for

you to be victorious in and through every problem, concern and care of life. Hewants you to completely trust in Jesus today and everyday! Hope, believe, haveconfidence and great expectation that His promises remain true. Rely and depend

on Him and He will never ever disappoint you. God loves you more than you couldever imagine. The truth is you can never trace His hand anyway, but you can al-

ways trust His heart! Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on yourown understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your

paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil.

    Upcoming Contest...

All children are born with the potential to lead

    successful, meaningful and prosperous lives,

while contributing to the world around them.

Unfortunately not all teens have access to adults

who can help them to achieve their goals. Even

some of the most gifted, talented, and moti-

vated teens need to have a handful of helpful

    encouraging adults in their lives.

Parents, think back to your own childhood.

You may be able to recall a valuable mentor

that played a part in the success of your life. It

may have been a teacher, a coach, a pastor or

even a friends mom or dad. Think of mentors

as nurturing adults who volunteer to give their

time and energy to young people, offering su p-

    port, encouragement, suggestions, guidance, and

    positive role modeling.

    Mentoring Leads to Future Success

Put quite simp ly, mentors make youths feel good

about themselves and deeply valued as human

beings. A mentor s role is to enable mentees to stay

focused, and motivated in school and other activities

by providing them with a sense of structure, help-

ing them to overcome obstacles and encouraging

them to work toward achieving their educational

    and career goals.

Think of becoming a mentor for some teens that

may be interested in your occupation, or just may

need someone to guide them along the way to

their career goals. We must not be intimidating but

encouraging and uplifting. Understand and know

what it means to give some of your time to the de-

velopment and enrichment of another human being.

    As a teenager, one of

    the farthest things from

    your mind is budget-

    ing. We all as parents

    understand that teens

    have a natural sense of

    entitlement. The process

    starts from birth. As a

    young child, we become

    accustomed to our par-

    ents fulfilling all of our

    needs, no matter how

big or small. As the gen-

    erations have grown, we

    have all become accus-

    tomed to wanting bet-

    ter for the next genera-

    tion. Everyone wants

    their children to prosper

    and do better than the

    generation before. How-

    ever, I dont think any-

    one ever dreamed the

    US economy would fall

so drastically. It is nowup to the future genera-

    tions to become wiser

    with spending. It is easy

    to point blame for past

    mistakes, but it would

    also be a serious waste

    of time, which never ac-

    complishes anything.

    Purpose4teens

    would like to give advice

    to help our teens with

    their thinking in terms of

    finances. During diffi-

    cult financial crunch-

    es it is important

    to save more

    money than you

    spend. Although

    it seems harsh, it will

    only be beneficial for

    the future. Teenagers

    are very limited when

    it comes to responsibil-

ity and it is much easier

    to save money when

    you have less responsi-

    bility. In other words,

    take advantage of

    living at home with

    your parents while you

can. If you have a part

    time job to purchase

    those gotta have

    items, make sure you

    dont spend your en-

    tire paycheck . Always

put some money awayfor a rainy day. A good

    rule of margin would be

    to spend 40% and save

    60%. When times get

    tough you will have a

    large savings to keep

    you afloat. Always re-

    member if you are plan-

    ning for college or just

    starting out on your own

    after graduation,

    YOU WILL NEED IT!!!
