Pump Down Operations Today
Wireline and Stimulation companies operate separately but not independently.
No difference in operating method if Stimulation and Wireline are same company or different companies.
Neither provider has all the information to identify a potential problem and adapt the operation ahead of a failure. – No pre-run planning – Always reactive, never proactive

Challenges
Wireline tension indicator is mounted at truck. Tension system designed for vertical work where constant tension load on cable exists. – In pump down, the tension measured is only the sum
of the vertical well section and the tension applied by the fluid pressure on the gun string.
• Tension can be lazy and inaccurate Recognition of gun travel issues must be recognized by
wireline engineer and communicated to stimulation engineer, usually by radio – Only one set of eyes on the tension or other
indicators

Pump Down Software / Downhole Tension Tool
1. Software - Developed to provide a unique view of the tool movement during a pump down run. – Captures real time data from Pumping and Perforating to give
easy to understand visual display – Display visible to Wireline, Stimulation and remote Customers
2. Downhole tension tool - designed for pump down
perforating operations. – Provides tension at the tool string, not from surface unit
3. Combined services provide user selectable, scalable plots
in real time to understand tool movement in the well

Value
Stimulation and Wireline – Offer combined data in easy to understand graphics – Real time – at well site or a remote site – Compare run to run for changes that may occur
downhole • Calculated indicators for cable head weak point
failure, predict and minimize pump offs – Post job diagnostics that captures all information in a
single database for review or later reference. – Offers measurements to evaluate and improve
wellsite efficiencies

Run Efficiency Improvements
Eagleford – Customer decided that based on the MCTD data, the gun
string could safely be recoverd back to surface at a faster speed for the second and following runs.
• Accurate cable head tension – safety margin is known and measureable
• Run to run comparison so intervals of trouble are identified on the first run.
• Saved ~15 minutes/run x 15 stages. – Single well customer cost savings would average
~$25,000 (customer calculations) – Multiple well completions could save 24 hours in 6 – 7
wells.

Operational Efficiency – Preventing NPT
Woodford – Customer drilled a toe up well with two 109 degree upturns.
Pump down perforating in similar toe up wells had problems due to guns sliding down slope, including guns sliding over the wireline damaging or severing the cable when perforating.
• Downhole Tension / PD Software solution was run and showed the gun string position in the upslope interval.
• When the gun string was stopped on the upslope, pumping was continued to prevent fallback of the gun string.
– Once the Plug was set, pumping was stopped, gun string was moved uphole and the remaining guns fired without incident
Real time decisions can be made to avoid possible damage to
equipment, fishing guns, additional gun runs and costly NPT

Summary
Each product offers advantages standalone. Real Time software provides important data sharing between
Wireline and Stimulation. Ability to measure tension at the tool allows immediate
problem solving decisions to be made instead of after a problem has occurred and cannot be resolved.
Value is combining services providing maximum value as a Solution – Time savings per run – Reduce or eliminate pumped off gun strings – Faster time to production and payback of well costs
