SIR,

The Public Library, Molbourne1 7th March~ 1900.

To the Clwhman of tlte Librar,¥ Committee.

I have the honour to submit the foliDwing Report for the yoa.r 1899 :--

I.-THE REFER&NCE LIBRARY.

The o.rlditious to the Library were-

2,931 volumos1

30,653 pamphlets and parts, 249 map!! and p1ans1

31-\:,216 ncwspnpers.

There is a decrouse of 251 vo:umo:s presented to tho Library n,s compared with the number of volumes presented iu the yer~r 1898, but tho:'e is lMl incroas0 of ;'560 volnmos oLtaiuod by purdw.:-:e. Ot:!y 62 voJomeg were oLln,inod under tbc pro\'isione of tho Copyright Act during the year unJor tcview as n,gainst 85 in tho pt'':!Yions JC:tr.

The Library stntistici' Bhow a total of H7,479 volumes in the Reference Li1mry at. the cnJ of tho year l 899.

Amongst the principal works n.ddcd during tlw year the following may be men~ tioneti :·~Gonld's "Birds of Europe/' and u Century of Birds from lhc Himnlayn }fonnw tains,,. the 10 Edition Nntionalc ''of Victor Hugo's works, "cvcrrd early volumes of tho "Hobart Town Gazette" ( 1817--37), a.ntl the "Jesuit Relations/1 cotHaining valnnblo rocortis of travels in America. from 16!0 to 1791.

The number of visits pa.itl to the Reference Librnry awl t,o the Ne\Y:<pttper Ronm (estimated) w~~s 3.:J2,419 Leing 10,778 in excess of the previous year. There hns been a marked. increnso in th<:< nttcnrlaw'!.e ;;lncc the rt;ncwnl of the gNnt for purchasing books.

The amount spent in bh:ding atld repairing -..vas £1,185 as ngninst .£1,000 4s. 4d. in the previous year.

The vahtc of the Newspaper Collection fm· reference pnrposo is now so great that spacial efforts ha Ye l10et1 made to obtain dnpHc.'ttc copies. of iho leading :JiollJonrue newspapers. During the year dnplicnt+'! files of t.be A'rgu.'l from 1852 to Ja,te1 rm•l of tl1e A;Je from 1855 to Uate, hn.ve been bound. Tbetw files are n.lmoe:t perfcet~ and will he t~aroi'ully preserved. ThB Age was first puh:i;;hcd on tiw 1 ith October, !854, nnd it is hoped that n dupliente cf the firat volnmo will t;hort;y ho obtJt.Lncd.

'l'ho work t!t!nc by the Library in rocuivlng nn:l Ueopntehing pllh1ical!ons un<ler tile system of exchange has heen consirlcrable1 as nmy l1e bCen fi·om the tables att<t.elwrl. The most important work dii!trihntcd on behalf of tho Tn1stees was tl1o vnlumc of "Letters from Victorian Pionecr1:1/' puLliHhctJ from the original letters presented to tbe Trt1stees lly His Ex:cdleney !lr, C. J. Lntrohe.

Grn,vc inconvenience has been cnmHstl dmiug the pMi few years owing to the want of space in tlic Library. TcmporfLry "store:-~ 1' wore made in differont place$ and the overcrowding of tho shelveR wns injuring the books :1.11 \Yell as dislnrbing the proper ch~.-s:sification, It was therefore det~iJed to use the Rotunda ns a store room. awl tho reliof afforded by t.bis :1.rrangoment hns bean considornh!e1 thongh still (Jf a very temporary eha.mctor, The whole uf t.he building~t uso(l for Librnry purpose~ nre so nmmitnble that I would strongly urge thM tho coni!<idem.tion of the Tntsteei:i be given to the hest mea.ns of de~tling witlt this question iu dttJ nco.r fuiure. In tlH~ pre..-:ont ltniltling Sllporvision is diilicuit nntl C'ostly-adoqun.tc supervi;;;ion if.! impossible. Tho result is disastrons, and I fear at len:;t mvler present drounntfl.neos, that it is iuevituhlc,

There is little to report in oonnexion with this Department. Only twelve librarie!l borrowed hooks during tbe year, making a total of 1,6.50 volumes lent.
