Conference Time is Here!Let’s head east together February 18-20, 2016 for the NCSS Conference and Trade Show. The momentum has been building over the past several years with a growing variety of vendors, excellent educational opportunities and venues that are fun for the whole family! We are excited to host surveyors from across the state at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside situated beautifully along the waterfront overlooking the retired battleship, USS North Carolina.
The Hilton Wilmington Riverside offers beautiful views and easy access to shopping and dining in downtown Wilmington. If you would like to bring your children, the North Carolina Railroad Museum is just blocks away. If the weather is nice, feel free to walk the boardwalk along Water Street or take a drive to Wrightsville Beach about 20 minutes from downtown.
We will continue our format from previous years with a full day seminar on Thursday taught by Rich Vannozzi, previously a geomatics instructor at the University of New Hampshire and currently a PhD candidate at the University of Connecticut. Jared Ownbey, instructor at AB Tech Community College, will teach a Survey Tech course for your support staff. The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBEES) Luncheon on Thursday will be hosted by Mike Benton. He will be offering information on the current activities of NCBEES. The Friday Plat Luncheon awards the best maps of the year submitted by surveyors from across the state. There will be concurrent sessions offered once again on the Trade Show floor throughout the day on Friday, covering a variety of topics. If one takes advantage of everything we are offering, one can come away with 11 PDHs to begin the year. We are pleased to announce that Friday evening’s keynote address will be given by Curt Sumner, Executive Director of the National Society of Professional Surveyors followed by the swearing in of your new Board of Directors for 2016.
This year’s theme, “Bringing It Forward,” reflects the need for our profession to continue to meet the demands that technology and education place upon the modern surveyor. Join NCSS as we begin a new year bringing the profession forward with the issues most important to you.
Presidential Awards BanquetFriday’s Presidential Awards Banquet is a great way to conclude our conference. The evening is graced with ceremony and celebration as we induct our 2016 Board of Directors. We will present the prestigious peer chosen “Surveyor of the Year,” and award our newest honor of “Young Surveyor of the Year,” chosen by the Board of Directors. Afterwards, we will enjoy fellowship and dancing as a relaxing way to end the evening.
Our Annual Plat Contest is underway! Send us a plat that you are proud of and you could win! Plats must have been recorded in 2015 and comply with official contest rules. Entries must be postmarked by January 29, 2016.
Winners will be presented at the Plat Luncheon on Friday, February 19. Plaques will be awarded for first place entries. A Best Over-All winner will receive a $100 cash prize, with his/her entry being entered into the NSPS National Plat Contest.Visit https://ncsurveyors.com/plat_competition for details & registration.

“Practical Geodesy” and “Perspectives in the Future of the Surveying Profession”
Instructed by A. Richard Vannozzi, MS, PLS
Thursday, February 18, 2016
Mr. Vannozzi is a graduate of the University of Maine where he earned a BS in Forestry w/ High Honors with concentrations in both Forest Management and Surveying in 1984 and an MS in Forestry (with a surveying emphasis) in 2006. He is also a doctoral candidate in the Department of Natural Resources (NRE) at the University of Connecticut. His research is focused on GIS Applications and Education for Land Surveyors. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Civil Technology program at the University of New Hampshire’s Thompson School of Applied Science where he teaches various courses in Surveying and Mapping. He is a Past-President of MALSCE (Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors & Civil Engineers) and was recognized as MALSCE’s Surveyor of the year in 1998. He has received four (4) Presidential Citations from MALSCE for his work on professional standards (1) and surveying education (3). Currently he serves on the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Board of Directors representing Massachusetts.
We will begin the day with Practical Geodesy. As the surveying profession transitions from a flat world view to a round earth view, much of the equipment and mapping tools require the application of geodetic principles in order to properly complete a project. This seminar will focus on those situations where surveyors most often have questions when utilizing these new technologies. Attendees will be able to better understand their responsibilities in those situations where they previously worked under plane surveying assumptions and now they must properly account for geodetic considerations.
In the afternoon, we will take a look at the role of surveyors in society. Standards, definitions of surveying, and society’s needs will be explored in detail. Topics will include construction layout surveys, data accumulation surveys (topographic, photogrammetric, utilities, site, hydrographic), as well as cadastral, original and retracement surveys. Our profession and practices are being impacted by today’s technology. How will surveyors engage in this evolution? Mr. Vannozzi will outline strategic changes needed for our profession and our practices.
