Dog Days of Summer
Friday, August 14
The ascendancy of the dog star Sirius during the hottest weeks of summer is why those sweltering days are called “dog days.” WCLV 104.9 will take advantage of this name to celebrate man’s best friend — and his other pals from the animal kingdom — in music. Celebrate the four-footed, two-footed, no-footed and winged friends with such delights as Gershwin’s “Walking the Dog,” Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals” and Leroy Anderson’s “The Waltzing Cat.” Be sure to tune in for some Sirius fun.

CHANGING ROLES
The Sound of Ideas (SOI) and The Sound of IdeasReporters’ Roundtable are each getting new hosts. Both are familiar voices for ideastream listeners. Rick Jackson [pictured, left] takes over Monday through Thursday duties on SOI, replacing Mike McIntyre [pictured, below]. McIntyre moves to Jackson’s spot on the Friday roundtable. Jackson has been the primary backup SOI host and has also served as the Friday roundtable host for years.
McIntyre, who joined SOI as host in 2010,recently became ideastream’s executive editor, making him the perfect choice to host the Reporters’ Roundtable. Congratulations, Rick and Mike!

CAMPS AND WORKSHOPS
Last month, ideastream remotely hosted the Sensational Science Camp with Ruff Ruffman in partnership with the Community Center at Woodhill Estates. Nearly 20 children who reside at Woodhill took part in a variety of STEM activities exploring physics, chemistry, engineering and a number of other science concepts.
ideastream also remotely hosted Family Community Learning Workshops featuring Molly of Denali, in partnership with the Near West Intergenerational School. Participants explored Alaskan Native Values, informational text and engaged in a variety of problem solving activities.

TAKE ONESMALL STEP
TAKE ONE SMALL STEP WITH IDEASTREAM AND STORYCORPS
Right now, Americans face their greatest challenge in a generation: rebuild our country in the wake of a global pandemic crisis. People of all backgrounds in this country have shown that we can come together in hard times. But with social distancing, an upcoming election and growing feelings of isolation and separation from our communities, how do we rise to that challenge?
“Liberal” or “conservative,” everyone has a stake in this community — and a responsibility tostep up. Start by coming to the table: This year, take One Small Step.
In collaboration with the national nonprofit StoryCorps, ideastream is inviting residents to havea conversation with another member of your community who you might not otherwise have a chance to talk with and with whom you might even disagree politically.
It’s part of One Small Step, a nationwide project launched by StoryCorps to break downboundaries created by the difficult time in America right now. ideastream is one of six stations across the United States chosen to lead in this initiative in 2020.
It’s free to participate, and you can join us virtually from your own home. It’s not about politics. It’s an opportunity to talk about the life experiences that formed your values, and to be reminded of how to listen with respect. When we come together, we can find the stories and the dignity at the foundation of one another’s beliefs.
