TARGET AUDIENCEThis educational activity is intended for neurologists, and general practitioners, as well as nurse practitioners and trainees in these disciplines engaged in the care of neurology patients.
LEARNING OBJECTIVESThe intended result of this activity is increased knowledge, competence, performance and skill, and enhanced patient care. At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Review the basics of deep brain stimulation for movement disorders, mechanism of action, surgical techniques and intraoperative neurophysiology.
• Familiarize with patient selection criteria for DBS and understand the complexity of multidisciplinary evaluation for DBS.
• Discuss the DBS programing strategies and optimize DBS treatment using troubleshooting algorithms.
• Understand the challenges in optimizing DBS and troubleshoot DBS failures
CREDIT DESIGNATIONThe University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
ACCREDITATIONThe University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Disclosure about provider and faculty relationships, or the lack thereof, will be provided to learners.
OVERVIEW
The Deep Brain Stimulation for Movement Disorders is designed to review the current practice guidelines regarding neuromodulation techniques for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Essential tremor and Dystonia. This course will provide an update regarding the patient selection, operative techniques and basics of DBS programing. In addition to hands on programing with live patients, algorithms for troubleshooting of DBS programming and long-term care strategies for DBS patients will be emphasized.
