In 1950 Nanna and Jørgen Ditzelcreated an unusual bowl-shapedseat, essentially a basket hangingfrom a light oak frame, achieving achair design that blended the seatand backrest into a bowl of a formconsistent with a shell, out-standing for being organic in itsform and in its materials. The use ofcraft materials and painstaking skillin making the rounded form, alongwith the chair’s pure lines give asensation of comfort and luxury in aseat that allows a variety ofpositions. Having beendistinguished with awards at theCabinetmakers Guild Exhibition andat the Milan Triennale in 1951, thewicker chair (1950) inspired arediscovery and exploration of themalleable properties of wicker and, consequently, a renewed status forwicker furniture in interior design. The 1950s wicker chair sparked aseries of experiments with hangingupholstered shapes on woodenframes.
