York Plastic Products (YPP) is a premier Australian
extruder of thermoplastic sheet and profiles
that has been operating for over forty-five
years. In 2015, YPP relocated to a new facility in
Fairfield East, New South Wales, Australia.

In June of 2015, YPP completed the
relocation of its entire manufacturing
operation from Riverwood, NSW to
Fairfield East, NSW. YPP prides itself
on the expertise of its long-serving
staff, and all of YPP’s manufacturing
personnel have made the transition to
the new location. Each YPP machine
operator has over two decades worth
of experience helping to ensure the
reliability of YPP’s processes, and
the quality of YPP’s products
In addition, YPP maintains a
quality system based on ISO
9001 so that product quality
consistency remains a key priority.
The new Fairfield East site utilizes the
latest in service piping technology.
The Aquatherm Polypropylene Piping
system, which delivers air and water
to the machines, has eliminated all
the impurities associated with the
original cast iron plumbing. This new
“leak-free” installation has resulted
in a vast improvement in production
efficiencies. In addition, YPP has also
adopted the maintenance protocols
of companies such as Tooheys and
Goodman Fielder in order to ensure
that the York Plastics Products
facility is amongst the most efficient
in the country. This translates
directly into lower cost production
and increased product quality.
Extensive time spent on Research and
Development enables YPP to be at the
forefront of new product development.
YPP was the first to launch the
Refractor line of diffusers aimed at
high glare lamp sources in commercial
lighting. In addition, YPP’s new
Visi-LED diffusers are YPP’s unique
proprietary range designed specifically
for LED lighting applications.

YPP Product Overview

Extrusion Line 1
Line 1 is devoted to the roll-forming extrusion of profiles.
These profiles are formed using a roll stack encapsulating the rolls
that impart the pattern; a forming-tool that creates the desired shape
of the profile, and various moulding rollers that help guide and form
the sheet into the profile shape as it progresses down the line.
The difference between die tool extrusion and roll-forming
is that a die is a standalone tool in which the material
passes through internally. Roll-forming creates this shape
externally of the forming tool, which allows for a greater
accuracy and imprint with regards to prismatic patterns.

Extrusion Line 2
Extrusion Line 2 extrudes embossed/patterned sheets.
Line 2 is YPP’s second-largest extruder and produces all YPP’s
wider embossed/patterned sheets. A pattern is imparted to
the material via the specific roll devoted to that pattern. These
embossing rolls are readily interchangeable within the roll stack
which allows for a greater flexibility in YPP’s production capability.
Line 2 is not just dedicated to one particular resin with its
operation involving multiple roll and resin changes.
Line 2 can extrude up to 400 kilograms per hour
and to a nominal width of 1350mm.

Line 4 is the largest extrusion line at YPP, and is solely
devoted to the extrusion of smooth/gloss sheet.
As a premium Reifenhäuser extruder, Line 4 has been
specified to produce the highest quality commercial finish
with its chrome rolls remaining permanently in situ.
As with Line 2, Line 4 extrudes multiple resins; all with a
smooth-gloss finish. It can extrude up to 500 kilograms
an hour at a maximum nominal width of 1550mm.

Film
All sheet produced on Line 4 has a protective Polyethylene
(PE) film. Acrylic will have film applied to both sides of the
sheet. ABS and ASA will have it applied to one side only.
Impact grades of acrylic are branded with film accordingly;
Pink film designates Medium Impact Acrylic
Blue film designates High Impact Acrylic.
YPP’s Medium Impact Acrylic is 50% Standard
Acrylic and 50% High Impact Acrylic.
YPP’s High Impact Acrylic is 100% High Impact. These
percentages are noted on the branded film.
YPP is able to extrude a multitude of blends depending
on customer requirement and volume.

Extrusion Line 5
Line 5 is exclusively devoted to the extrusion of
specialized lighting diffusers utilizing Clear Acrylic,
Refractor, and YPP’s new LED resin Visi-LED.
Products are available in the same patterns and
different resins. For example, Y5 is Fine Rib in Refractor,
whereas Y21 is Fine Rib in Clear Acrylic.
Line 5 extrudes to a nominal width of 660mm at a
rate of approximately 100 kilograms per hour.

Raw Material
1. Acrylic – Polymethyl Methacrylate
(PMMA)
• Clear acrylic is 100% UV resistant
• Masterbatches can be added to produce
various colours – opal, yellow, etc.
• Acrylic can come in a High Impact Grade,
which is 10 times as strong as Standard
Acrylic
• Other impact strengths can be obtained by
mixing High Impact Acrylic with Standard
Acrylic, i.e. YPP’s medium impact is 50%
High Impact and 50% Standard Impact
• High Impact Acrylic contains a “rubber”
modifier which gives more elasticity to the
panel, which results in more strength and
better formability
• The High Impact Modifier makes forming
easier as the sheet is not as brittle and
more flexible.
2. Refractor
• Refractor has a higher refractive index than
normal acrylic which allows for nearly the
same light transmission as Clear Acrylic,
but obscuring the glare produced from the
lamp source
• Increasingly more popular with high glare
lamp sources such as T5 or LED
• Predominately used for lighting diffusers.
3. Visi-LED
• Visi-LED is YPP’s proprietary
resin specially blended for LED lighting
applications
• Visi-LED has a higher refractive index than
normal acrylic, and obscures the hot spots
associated with LED light sources whilst
offering good light transmittance
• Designed to reduce the pixilation of the
LED
• Predominately used for lighting diffusers.
4. ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
• Usually utilized for its impact and heat
resistance
• ABS derivatives will possess increased heat
or impact resistance depending on the
grade
• Is susceptible to UV and sunlight.
5. ASA – Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate
• Improved weather resistance over ABS
allowing for outdoor applications
• Introduced by BASF as “Luran”
• Heavily used in automotive and other
outdoor applications.
YPP utilises a variety of resins, and resin derivatives within our range.
