What is Publishing? Federal-Chambers Advanced English Dictionary: ‘Publishing’ is - business of printing and selling books,
newspapers and magazines to the public. Final stage in writing process (depends on it purpose). Murray, D. M. (2004) - significant of publishing in writing: A stage where it completes the writing. A good medium to share ideas & knowledge to readers. Give opportunity to see the feedbacks and improve writing
skills.
Reasons for Publishing Writing?
Barkas, J. L. (1985): “How to write like a professional” mentioned about the reasons:
To share our ideas. To get recognition. To resist critics. To become rich & famous etc.
Process Writing: How to Publish Writing?
MAGAZINESBarkas, J. L. (2004) share some tips:• Get a literary agent/ expert person in
writing skills to critics your ideas (p.104)
• Start making first draft of writing – not to publish yet.
• Do some research: Who your audience? Where to promote your product? What style you want to use? (p.105)
• Take rejection well (p.105).• Write a query letter (p.107).
Let us imagine…• What happen when we receive a
letter stating that:
“Thank you for letting us see your article entitled “Why do People Complain?”. We read it
with interest; but unfortunately, the piece does
not fit in with our editorial plans at this time. I am
returning the manuscript to you with our best wishes for publication elsewhere. Thank
you.”
What is query letter?• A letter with a short statement
that mentioning our writing plan & brief information about our writing expertise.
• To get editor attention to accept our writing and publish it.
• Must consider these:
a) Your idea must be the latest, newest and fresh.
b) This particular magazines is the right place to publish your ideas.
Example:Dear sir,My name is Latifah Rabbaaniah, a
journalist from Berita Harian. I will be going to eastern Ukraine by this week to interview local people at Hrabove, who had admitted to see our flight, MH17 had hit the ground and break into two.
Would your magazine be interested in an article based on my trip and interview with the local people from there?

JOURNALS
• Professional writing - we tell people about our research activities.
• Challenging writing - we comment & give opinions to our peer’s research activities.
• It is full & lengthy work to do. People would prefer to make journal reviews.
• Journal reviews can be publish + give good reputation to writer (know writer expertise & analytical abilities).
Barkas, J. L. (1985) shared some tips:o Study/ make some research about the
magazines (p.111).o Decide to whom you should submit your
ideas (p.112).o Write a query letter.o Enclose published clips (p.112) –
attachment copies of your published articles. It helps to reflects your writing abilities.
o Be professional with rejections/ hard assignments (p.112).
o Submit a neat & clean copy before deadline – follow the steps in process writing.
o If accepted, don’t be arrogant – keep learning to write well.
