Portfolio & Process Arlene Graziano, IllustratorMaiamorphosis Arts 2012

I work both digitally and traditionally.

I usually begin each illustration with a set of graphite sketches.

Next, I photograph or scan the sketches and import them into my drawing software.

I use Corel Painter and a Wacom tablet to finish the illustration.

Sometimes, I scan in my colored pencil drawings and inkwork then combine them digitally.

My current highly technicalphotography set-up = digital camera + full sun outside + garden bench.

I found I had better luck preserving color nuances using sunlight.

But, I also use a bright white LED indoors with no flash.

I sketch as often as I can, either in color or in graphite or with a watercolor pan set.

I show some of my sketches on Flickr.com

I am interested in Natural Science and History.

Often exploring one topic, will lead me to consider another.

I had been drawing the big horn ram from a photo I had taken in Colorado when I began thinking about the Colorado Gold Rush.

These two pieces were developed from a prompt on the website Illustration Friday.

Illustration Friday is a weekly illustration challenge. A topic is posted every Friday and then participants have all week to come up with their own interpretation. Illustration Friday was created by illustrator Penelope Dullaghan.

Originally, I had thought that I would include the children in the foreground, but decided that I needed more emphasis on the messenger pigeon.

I work in digital layers, so it is fairly easy for me to make changes to a composistion.

Also on this page is a tracing paper sketch of the pigeon which the children have tried to hide in the kitchen. Initially, I had the pigeon eating a carrot.

I was afraid that the pigeon looked dead, so I added the girl’s fingers feeding him the breadcrust.

The black and white image is a thumbnail of about 16 that I sketched before I decided on the “mostly” final composition.

The color images here are actually vector sketches that I had considered refining for the completed artwork.

I use a program called Xara Xtreme which is where I slapped together these really rough - “roughs”.

Ultimately, I decided not to illustrate my Chicken Licken piece using the vector artwork.

I think sometimes non-artists are shocked at the messy beginnings of most artwork.

It actually has taken a while for me to come to grips with sharing the messy parts.

Here is my final piece and one of the character sketches for Foxy Loxy.

So, although I would prefer the world to view me as a natural creative genius, and see only my best- this is my process in most of its gory details.

Let me know if I can answer any questions or just send me a note to say hello!Arlene

My Artist Statement Children show us such shining moments of perfection- a glimpse of what we all could be- and often in the quietest way.

I believe that we adults should listen harder for those quiet voices and try to honor their gift to us with visions of equal beauty.
