The downward spiral continues. Yet another school shooting has occurred, this time in Florida. Yet another angry young man has taken his feelings out on people in a place he knows he will be successful: school halls. If you get in his way you are shot, whether you were the focus of his intent or not.
Naturally the media has blown up with every-one’s two-cents on the matter. In addition to opinions regarding more gun control laws, words
have been flying with such statements as, “I can’t believe in a God who would let children be killed in school.” One hears this statement frequently when bad things happen. We heard it during wartimes, in the Oklahoma City terrorist bombing, and on 9/11 when America was attacked. And it will continue to be asked. Or one like it. “Where is God?” God is looked at as a far-off being, not involved, not caring, not powerful enough to stop innocent blood from being shed. God is distant and doesn’t care about us at all.
As Christians, we have to be brutally candid in our responses to such view-points. Living in a world that is as beautiful and wondrous as it is, we don’t want to acknowledge it is also fallen. It truly is a savage wilderness under blue skies. And bad things happen to unsuspecting and even faithful people. It’s a world where evil preys on everyone. It’s a world where death can come to people at any age and where weeping and sorrow exist. Try as we might, we are not able to insulate nor isolate ourselves from the dangerous conditions that surround us but we have been fully warned to be on the alert.
The Apostle Peter reminds us that our adversary the devil roams our world like a roaring, devouring lion seeking someone to devour. Satan doesn’t want us to be in God’s Word or to go to church to worship the one who defeated him, Jesus Christ. Nor does Satan want us to confess our sins, ask for mercy and have our sin forgiven. No. Satan will tempt us every way possible to keep us from the table of grace and the cross of life. And Satan happily puts before us people who turn their backs on God when evil makes its presence known; people who say things like “Where is your God?”
Psalms 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God has not abandoned us or forgotten us. He never will. To those who love him, God says, “Fear not, for I am with you. I will strengthen you, I will help you.” You see God is not absent from our world. He walks with us through the darkest valleys, those places where death’s dark shadows dwell.
As one ponders all the evil in the world we have an assurance that God really does care for us. Not only does He care, but He cares enough to have sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer and die for us. And because of this love and sacri-fice, we are able to be reconciled with God the Father. This doesn’t mean suf-fering will go away. But it does mean that we will be able to spend eternity in a heavenly city that knows no suffering, or violence. This is the hope to which we hold onto as the world continues to spiral downward.

Council Appreciation Dinner
The Council Appreciation Dinner for the outgoing members, Gerald Dietz, Paulette Patschke, and
Raymond Lenz will be held on Thursday, March 1st, at the Thrall Country Diner at 6:30 p.m. All
current council members are also invited to attend.
Spring Clean-Up
Saturday, March 24th has been designated as our Spring Work Day to help get
our buildings and grounds in shape for the Easter Season. It will begin with a
lite breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Please bring dust rags, hedge trimmers, rakes, weed
eaters, clippers, etc.—whatever you think will help get the job done.
Everyone’s help will be appreciated.

Lent Season Continues
Mid-week Lenten Services for 2018 will continue to be held every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
through March 21. The theme for this year’s services is “The Sign of Jonah”.
Holy Week Schedule
Holy Week is the last week of the Lenten season and the week before Easter. Congregations all over the country observe the Holy Week as the most sacred week of the year.
Holy Week 2018begins on Palm Sunday, and includes religious holidays Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Palm Sunday (March 25)
Commemorates Jesus Christ's triumphant entry to Jerusalem. It is marked by the distribution of palm leaves to the assembled worshipers.

Maundy Thursday (March 29) Commemorates the last supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles.
Worship Service/Holy Communion—7:00 p.m.
Good Friday (March 30) Commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Cavalry.

Note about Altar flowers during the Lenten Season—No flowers will be placed on the altar during the
season of Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 14 through Palm Sunday, March 25, which on
that Sunday, palms will be placed on the altar. However, if you would like to place flowers for a special
occasion or in memory of someone during any Sunday of Lent, they may be placed on stands.

L.A.F. (Lutheran Adult Fellowship)
In March, LAF will be supplying the Breakfast for the Workday/Spring Clean-up scheduled
for Saturday, March 24th. Let’s hope for a great turnout and get our grounds and buildings
in shape for the coming Easter Season.
Coming in April, will be our Annual Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt after the Worship Service.
Everyone’s help will be appreciated.
Below are a few pictures from our first Before-Lent Pancake Supper. It was well-attended in spite
of the nasty weather that was dealt us that night. Maybe next year will be even better.

With the successful start-up of A.C.E.S., it has been decided to participate in the Adult Christian Education Studies and have separate business meetings at various times during the year as
deemed necessary. It is hoped that everyone will participate.
Mission Statement
WinGS is for ALL women at Prince of Peace. Each of us can use our spiritual gifts for the glory of God and the encouragement of one another. WinGs is a growing ministry that welcomes your participation, questions, and ideas. It is the purpose of WinGs to promote lasting friendships through fellowship and
service to our church family, our community, and other meaningful outreaches. Let us join hands and hearts in the accomplishment of this purpose.
All women of the congregation are considered members of WinGS.

Ashleigh’s Bridal Shower
On Saturday, February 10th, the WinGS Circle hosted a Bridal Shower for Ashleigh Veit. There was lots of
delicious food, she received many nice gifts, and everyone had a good time. Our best wishes go out to
Ashleigh and her fiancée, Sean Lucier, who will be married on April 8th in Oklahoma.
Thank you to all that helped make this possible.

Bible Study Classes and Confirmation Classes
Gem Naivar is the Sunday School Director.
Pastor Kerri will be teaching the Confirmation class.
Steven Patschke will be teaching the Pre-confirmation class.
Gem Naivar & Lea Rhoades will be teaching the Beginners class.
Braeden Lenz will be leading the High School Discussion Class.
Classes are scheduled for each second and third Sundays.
A.C.E.S.
“Adult Christian Education Studies”
A.C.E.S. meets each first and third Wednesdays of the month and begins each night
with a light supper at 6:30 p.m. with class beginning shortly thereafter.
Join us for interesting and informative classes.
The classes will be suspended after this date until the Lenten Season is over.
Classes are expected to start up again on April 18.
Playing for Keeps
When I was a child, one of my favorite games was the game of marbles. I don't see children playing mar-bles any more. Some of you may not even know how to play marbles. Let me explain how we used to play marbles when I was a child.
First, you draw a big ring in the dirt. Then each player puts the same number of his own marbles into the ring. The players then take turns shooting a marble, like this, (demonstrate) trying to knock the other marbles out of the ring. When a shooter knocks a marble out of the ring, he picks it up and puts it in his pocket. If his shooting marble stays inside the ring, he was allowed to keep shooting. If not, the next shooter takes his turn. When all the marbles have been knocked out of the ring, they are counted and the one with the most marbles is the winner.
Before a game of marbles begins, one player will sometimes ask the other players, "Are we playing for fun, or are we playing for keeps?" If you just play for fun, when the game is over, the winner gives the marbles back. But if you play for keeps, the winner gets to keep all of the marbles he has won.
Some people live their life as if it were a game of marbles. They spend their whole life trying to be the one with the most marbles. They think that the one with the biggest house, the fanciest car, and the most money in the bank is the winner. They think they are playing "for keeps," but when they come to the end of their life, do you know how many of their marbles they get to take with them? None of them! They spend their whole life trying to win all of the marbles, but in the end, they are left with nothing!
Jesus said that if we want to be real winners we must be willing to give up everything and follow him. When we follow Jesus, we may not have a lot of the things that some people think are important. We may not live in a big house or drive a fancy car, but we will have something that is much better than that, we will have treasures laid up for us in heaven. When we get to heaven, there will be a mansion waiting for us to move in and we will walk around on streets of gold. Best of all, we will have everlasting life with Jesus. You see, when we give our lives to Jesus, HE "plays for keeps."
Some people will give anything to get more marbles, but Jesus asked "What good will it do them if they gain the whole world, but lose their soul?"
Dear Father, help us to realize that the only life that lasts is a life lived for you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

For everyone who has an e-mail address, the newsletter will be e-mailed to you. There will be some printed copies available at the church on each 4th Sunday of the month for the month following. The only exception will be in months with five Sundays. Copies will be mailed via USPS to the shut-ins, those without e-mail (unless you pick up a copy in church), or to those who request it to be mailed. Let us know your preference. A New Mindset
Several folks across the Texas District recently began reading and discussing Greg Finke's book, Joining Jesus on His
Mission - How to Be an Everyday Missionary. At the end of chapter 1, Finke writes a short paragraph that caused me to
pause and ponder: "Old mindset, old practices, old results. New mindset, new practices, new results." As I reflected on
this statement, I asked myself, is this true? And if so, what does it mean?
Is it true? Well as the old saying goes, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expect-
ing different results. And so it rings true that if we continue in the same old practices, we should expect the same old
results. But what does it mean for the church today?
Well the obvious answer is we need to do things differently if we have any hope of being more effective at sharing the
Gospel and reaching the lost, the left out and the next generation. But what struck me about Finke's statement is that it
points to a deeper truth as well: the importance of having a new mindset. If all we do is try new things without a new
mindset, we will likely undermine the new practices which therefore will not lead to the results we might have hoped for.
True change, if it is to lead to the kind of positive new results that God desires for us, must be born out of new mindset.
And this is what Paul communicates in Romans 12:1-2: "Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I
urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be
conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good,
pleasing, and perfect will of God." To repent means to change one's mind (and heart) which leads to a change in action.
Paul identifies that this requires presenting ourselves to God in a self-sacrificial way, willing to be transformed through
repentance, by having our hearts and minds changed.
So the question we need to ask ourselves if we are to see new results in the church is are we willing to truly present
ourselves to God ready to surrender everything (even that we hold near and dear with our church)? Are we willing to
have our hearts and minds changed? We need to pray, "It's not mine Lord, it's yours. I'm sorry for the ways I've made
church about what I like and what I want. And I'm sorry for the ways that I've neglected our true mission to go and make
disciples. Change our hearts and minds and lead us into a new way of being the church that will more fully honor and
glorify you through our faithful and obedient action. Amen."
