Advent: A Journey of Prayer

During Advent this year, we will be on a journey of

prayer with Zechariah, Elizabeth and Mary. We will

hear the stories of Advent in the gospel of Luke. We

never hear these stories all together in Advent, but

now we will. We will hear how the angel Gabriel

comes to the aging Zechariah to announce the birth

of John, and again how the angel Gabriel comes to

Mary to announce the birth of Jesus and how Mary

and Elizabeth meet to share their incredible stories

and we will hear about the birth of John. Along with

receiving a message on these texts, you with learn

the prayer called the Examen. This is short for ‘the examination of consciousness,’ a prayer writ-

ten by St. Ignatius. This prayer will help us become more aware of God’s presence in our life

and to discern God’s direction.

The Examen is a prayer I learned when I was being trained as a spiritual director. During that

training, I learned about the life of Ignatius. He was born in 1491 to a large wealthy family in

Spain. As a young adult, he entered into the military and was wounded in battle, injuring both

his legs. During his recovery, he experienced a spiritual conversion after reading a book about

the life of Jesus and the life of the saints. This conversion led him to earnestly seek God’s call on

his life through prayer. Through prayer Ignatius eventually wrote the spiritual exercises, (a guide

book for spiritual directors), went to study at a university and formed the order called The Soci-

ety of Jesus or Jesuits. To this day, the Jesuits pray the Examen daily.

Come and join us for our Wednesday Advent services beginning November 30th at 6:15

p.m. where we will sing the “Joyous Light” liturgy, reflect on scripture, and learn the Examen

prayer.

Blessings,

MIDWEEK ADVENT SERVICES Midweek Advent Services will be held Nov.30, Dec. 7, 14 & 21 at 6:15 p.m. We will be using Ray McKeever’s Joyous Light liturgy, which we have used in years past. Come enjoy our Ad-vent Soup Suppers before hand from 5:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

BLUE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL SERVICE You are invited to a special service at 7:00 pm on December 18th. We are hosting a “Blue Christmas” service. The holidays are a festive time. However, they can also be hard times for those who are grieving the loss of loved ones, changes in life situations or endings of dreams. Come and experience God speaking to you at this time in a very intimate and caring way. Feel free to invite any family members or friends, who may find this useful, to join us in the worship.

USHERS ***************************************************************************

Chris Howard is trying something different for assigning ushers for December and the Christmas Eve Services to pro-

vide flexibility in our scheduling. The Youth have been using Sign-Up Genius online for the Oasis services and it seems

to work very smoothly.

As such, rather than assign a monthly rotation for December, we have set up a page via Sign-Up Genius (through

Prince of Peace) whereby you can volunteer to usher based upon your schedule. We are looking for two ushers for

each Sunday service (as normal) and 3-4 ushers for each Christmas Eve service. Please review your schedules and

sign up early to ensure we have enough coverage. (New

Ushers always welcome too!!)

How it Works— access the Sign-up Genius tool here:

POP Ushering Sign-Up or via the PoP Website under Minis-

tries/Worship Support Ministry.

You can create an account, but it is not necessary.

Click a “Sign Up” box next to the service(s) slot of interest.

When done, click the “Submit and Sign Up” button at the

bottom of the page.

Enter the name of the person ushering in the “Feedback”

box next to the service selected.

Provide your name and email address as requested.

Save your selections by clicking the “Sign Up Now!” button

at the bottom of the page.

PoP Supports Girl Up — a campaign of the United Nations Foundation, an organization created

to support the work of the United Nations.

United Nations Foundation

The United Nations is the one international organization with the reach and vision capable of

solving global problems. The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others

around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and nongovernmental or-

ganizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, peace and

security, women’s empowerment, poverty eradication, energy access, and U.S.-UN relations.

United Nations and Adolescent Girls

Since Girl Up’s launch in 2010, we’ve partnered with the United Nations to support comprehensive programs that give

adolescent girls in developing countries an equal chance for education, health, social and economic opportunities, and

a life free from violence.

Wondering how it all works? Great! Check out the Global Mission team’s efforts in the Narthex this Sunday, November

27th over Jariito samples (Hispanic refreshments). All snack donations will go to support Girl Up. Or, go HERE for a

video to hear more about Girl Up. Intrigued? Contact Sara Aldana at 739-7028 on ways you can get involved!

… ACTIVITIES

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 9

Christmas Gift Selection Tool I recently attended a meeting of the Fox Valley Church Librarian’s Association where the speaker was a librarian from a local public library. She told the group about Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org) which is a site offering a large library of age-based and educational ratings and reviews for movies, games, apps, TV, shows, websites, books and music. It may be espe-cially helpful at this time of year if you are looking for appropriate media gift selections. When navigating the site, you can search a spe-cific title to access a complete review. At the top right, you can filter by age and the type of media you are looking for. When you select the title and are in the review, the left side of the screen has a “What Parents Need to Know” rating which provides more details about the content. Recommended alternatives to the titles will be on the bottom of that screen. Changes to the Children’s Library We have made some changes in the children’s section of our library. The collection is now sorted by subject. There are 8 categories (Bible Stories; Char-acter/Values; Christian Issues; Christmas; Devotions/Prayer; Easter; Faith Formation; Fiction/Stories) and each one is assigned a color code. All the books within that category have a color coded sticker on the spine. A wall chart details what type of books fall within categories that aren’t self-explanatory and which color is assigned to each category. Within the category, titles are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. We hope this will aid in finding children’s books more easily. Little Free Library Update The Little Free Library committee met in November with Austin Seals, the Eagle Scout who will be building our library. We discussed placement and design of the library which will be put in place next spring so watch for future updates. Once it is operational more volunteers will be needed for stewardship shifts, taking care of the library by keep-ing it stocked and orderly.

DECEMBER 2016 • PRINTS OF PEACE 10

OUR ALL CONGREGATION CHRISTMAS PROGRAM AND POTLUCK is on December 11, 2016 starting at 10:45. The theme for this year is ‘Traditions of Christmas amid Faith, Family & Fellowship.’ The Christmas pro-gram at the 10:45 service will be a retelling of the story of Jesus’ birth where the entire congregation will have the chance to be part of the cast of the very first Christmas. So if you or your child has always wanted to be Mary or Joseph, or a sheep, here is your chance! There are no lines for anyone besides the narrator(s) to rehearse, unless you want to “Baa” or “Moo!” After the Christmas program, everyone is invited to move into the Fellowship Hall where we will continue our theme of Traditions by having a potluck of dishes, treats and other foods that families of Prince of Peace traditionally make for the Christmas season. We will follow the meal with a specially chosen craft and an opportunity for families to share their Christmas faith traditions over table conversation. There is a potluck sign-up sheet posted on the Faith Formation bulletin board in the Narthex. We are looking for volunteers to help with the following: 1. Help hand out costume props during the program 2. Youth musicians to provide prelude music to the 10:45 service 3. Help decorate the Fellowship Hall the Friday or Sat-urday before (TBD) 4. Help clean up the Fellowship hall afterwards

**Please let us know if you are interested in helping with any of these things!** We are looking forward sharing this day of Traditions with all of you as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ! Our 2017 Mission Jamaica teams are planning for our

January and February trips to Montego Bay. We will be working with 4 projects:

Westhaven Home for Handicapped Children and Youth, Clifton Boys Home, Garland Hall and building a Ja’Bode

home (Jamaica's version of a Habitat home). This year, we hope Prince of Peace members and families

might consider including these projects in your holiday gifting! Want to learn more?

Please visit with us in the Narthex on Dec. 4th or 11th to hear all about our plans. We’ll happily provide envelopes for your gifts of any amount (find suggests below).

Choose from the following projects to support: A gift to “Adopt a Child” at Westhaven Home for Handicapped Children and Youth.

We suggest $10 for a month of care for a child. A gift to a scholarship program for a high school graduate from Clifton Boys Home

who is able to go to a trade school to learn a trade and become self-supporting. A gift to the Ja’bode build to add a bathroom to the home another participating church will be building.

We suggest $25 for 2 boards for the siding. A bag of groceries for Garland Children’s Home, which will be purchased by our team.

We suggest a gift of $10 for each grocery bag. Thank you for caring for the adults and children of Jamaica.

We are pleased to note that 100% of your gifts will go directly to the project you and your family choose ! If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Nancy Wittrock, or the Global Missions ministry.
