OverviewAftertheSupremeCourt’srulinginShelbyCountyv.Holder,whichstruckdownkeyprovisionsoftheVotingRightsAct,theNorthCarolinalegislaturepassedacontroversialbill(HB589,VoterInformationandVerificationAct,orVIVA)that,amongotherprovisions,mandatedthatallNorthCaroliniansshowavalidphotoIDwhenvoting.InAugust2016,the4thCircuitCourtofAppealsstruckdownmostofVIVA’sprovisions.Inthislesson,studentswillexplorevotinglawsinNorthCarolinaandweightheprosandconsofbillslikeVIVA.Basedonclassdiscussionandtheevidencetheycollectthroughoutthelesson,studentswillmakeaninformeddecisionregardingtheiropinionaboutNorthCarolina’selectionlaws.Grade10NorthCarolinaEssentialStandardsforCivicsandEconomics• CE.C&G.4.3-AnalyzetherolesofcitizensofNorthCarolinaandtheUnitedStatesintermsof
